"The Hemptress" is back — and this time, she's bringing a friend. Weeds returns to Showtime tonight to start its fifth season, and the network is using that opportunity to launch a high-profile and intriguing new series, Nurse Jackie.
I'm especially curious to see what this season of Weeds will hold considering the total transformation the show undertook last year.

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can also add Defiance, Army Wives: Season Two, Reaper: Season Two, and Prison Break: Season Four to your queue.

I admit I tapered off Weeds a bit toward the end of season four, when Nancy's now-very-serious drug dealing got to be a bit too much. (Where was my iced coffee and my satirical suburbia?) But that doesn't mean I'm not curious to see what new twists and turns the Weeds folks have cooked up for us for season five.
These two new promos for Showtime are helping raise my interest.

When I turned on my computer this morning, I discovered link after link bringing me to new photos from upcoming movies and TV shows. There's a first glimpse at Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and two images from Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lovely Bones. There's a first look at the young Lily from the Gossip Girl spinoff, and (appropriately for today, the 20th of April) we've got a new poster for Weeds.

Weeds creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan (one of my favorite names in showbiz, by the way) is filling her time between Weeds seasons developing a new comedy for Showtime. Titled Ronna and Beverly, the show is based on a series of sketches that two hilarious ladies, Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo (that's them on the left), developed in comedy venues and on YouTube.
Just reading the description of the show cracks me up:
Ronna and Beverly revolves around two middle-aged women in Boston who decide to self-publish and aggressively promote a dating guide for Jewish singles, "You'll Do a Little Better Next Time."

Showtime's Weeds wrapped up its fourth season on Monday. The show shook things up this time around, leaving behind suburbia for a new life on the Mexican border — not to mention ditching its signature "Little Boxes" theme (and Conrad!). Did you think Weeds was as good this time?

Weeds is starting its fourth season tonight by burning the show's whole premise to the ground. This is definitely not the same show where latte-sipping Nancy Botwin got into small-time drug slinging to hold on to her lifestyle after her husband's death. All of that is gone now: the luxury, the lattes, and even the relatively innocent Nancy who just happened to get caught up in something way over her head.
