Movie Preview: Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire, directed by the same guy responsible for Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle, is receiving rave reviews (to put it mildly) that include:

This nice statement from the Wall Street Journal: "There's never been anything like this densely detailed phantasmagoria - groundbreaking in substance, damned near earth-shaking in style."
And this one from Time: "A buoyant hymn to life, and a movie to celebrate."
And this one from Variety: "As drama and as a look at a country increasingly entering the world spotlight, Slumdog Millionaire is a vital piece of work by an outsider who's clearly connected with the place."

Impressive, right? The film has been making the festival rounds for some time now and slowly generating a lot of buzz - even that of the Oscar variety. I'm totally intrigued by this story of an "18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much?"

Yet Another Awesome Spider-Man 3 Trailer

It's a good thing that Spider-Man 3 looks like it's going to kick ass, because after all this build-up, the movie has a lot of hype to live up to. I already told you guys about the trailer that premiered during "Heroes," but now everyone is excited about the even newer (and final) version that just hit theaters.

This preview has a few more shots of Venom (Topher Grace) that we haven't seen before, with a little bit less footage of Sandman. You can watch a high-bandwidth version along with some cool behind-the-scenes clips on the Comcast site, or you can watch it right here if you read more

And Now, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" Trailer

When I went to see 300 this weekend, I was shocked to find crowds of fans dressed as pirates lined up to see the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. I know these movies make a lot of money, but I had no idea the franchise had such a rabid following as to inspired costumed pilgrimages on a Sunday afternoon.

The final installment of Disney's trilogy hits theaters May 25, and unlike last year's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, this movie appears to have a plot. Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) team up with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to liberate our beloved Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and travel to Singapore to confront a scary Chinese pirate played by Chow Yun-Fat.

Judging from the trailer, this movie looks to be at least as good as the first Pirates, if not better. I know you guys are psyched about it too. To watch, read more

Movie Preview: Shrek the Third

The Moviefone website describes the newest Shrek movie, coming out May 18, like this:

Shrek, Donkey, Puss In Boots and Fiona are back for another fun-and-pun-filled adventure, and this time they're joined by Captain Hook, Sir Lancelot and ... Justin Timberlake as King Arthur?! Long story short: Get ready for some 'Sexyback,' medieval-style.

I'm sorry, but it just seems wrong to merge an animated children's character with the words "Sexyback" and "medieval-style." Regardless, the Shrek the Third trailer was just released today, so check it out.

Movie Preview: Rocky Balboa Meets Grumpy Old Men

On December 20th, Sylvester Stallone will return to the big screen in Rocky Balboa, the newest installment in a franchise we thought was long put to rest. The premise is pretty ridiculous. In fact, when I saw this trailer before Casino Royale, I joined a packed movie theater in roaring laughter. (Just hit "play" above and you'll see what I mean.) The story centers on an aging Rocky Balboa after he watches a computer-simulated boxing match between himself and the current young, beefy boxing champion. In the virtual world, Rocky is the predicted winner, so Rocky decides to try his hand at fighting the whippersnapper, having at least one computer program that believes in him. He begins training for yet another Big Fight, except this time, he's also up against a variety of ailments and frailties commonly associated with, you know, old age.

It seems like there's no good way to end this movie. A win would be pretty difficult to believe, yet if he loses, we'll have just watched an old man get pummeled. Even Rocky has reservations about returning to the ring, saying "I ain't interested in getting mangled and embarrassed." Judging from the trailer, it looks like it's a little too late for the embarrassed part.

Movie Preview: Ben Stiller Plays It Straight in Greenberg

I have a love/hate relationship with Ben Stiller movies. Over the years, I've grown tired of seeing him in the same everyman role again and again (with a few exceptions, like There's Something About Mary), but every now and then he throws a curve ball that pulls me back in. Greenberg already looks like one of the latter films.

The upcoming indie movie from The Squid and the Whale director Noah Baumbach follows Roger Greenberg, a middle-aged New Yorker who heads to LA and decides to "do nothing" in an attempt to figure out his life. The movie looks like it could be a tearjerker, but maybe that's just because LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends" is playing in the background. (The band's James Murphy lends a few new songs to the movie). Rhys Ifans is Roger's best friend while Greta Gerwig is the woman he befriends and beds. Movie Preview: Amanda Seyfried in Letters to Juliet

Amanda Seyfried's latest film Letters to Juliet looks like a mash up of her other work. First off, her character's name is Sophie, which brings Mamma Mia to mind, as does the romantic foreign locale. But even the title itself made me do a double-take - wait, isn't she already doing a book-turned-film about letters called Dear John?! Still, I'm not writing it off just yet. (No pun intended). I can be a sucker for a love story, even if it's a bit sappy.

The film follows Seyfried as an American tourist who discovers an unanswered "letter to Juliet" while on a trip in Verona, Italy. (The notes are left by visitors asking for help from Shakespeare's famous heroine.) She responds to the plea, and then sets off to find its author (Vanessa Redgrave) and reunite her with the man she left decades before. Of course, there's a triangle in there too, as Sophie begins to question her own relationship with her fiance (Gael Garcia Bernal) and falls for the woman's grandson (Christopher Egan).

The trailer pretty much gives away the whole movie, but this sort of storyline is usually predictable so I'll forgive the studio for it. Bonus for Taylor Swift fans: her "Love Story" is the theme song. The film doesn't arrive in theaters until May, but check it out and tell me what you think when you read more.

Movie Preview: Robert Pattinson in Remember Me

A little Robert Pattinson overload never hurt anyone, but here's a break from all of his vampire stuff - the official trailer for Remember Me! Yesterday we took a peek at the first stills from the film, but here we get a much better taste for Pattinson's chemistry with Emilie de Ravin in the upcoming drama/romance. Pattinson plays Tyler, a broody but romantic college student who falls for the daughter of a cop (de Ravin). Pierce Brosnan also stars as Tyler's dad, while Chris Cooper plays the police officer who has an issue with Tyler's bad boy antics.

I was a bit skeptical about Pattinson's next film, but I have to admit that the movie looks intriguing despite a few cliches and a bit of cheesiness. It's nice to see Pattinson playing it straight in a more grownup role than the perpetual teenage vampire, and he and de Ravin have a fair amount of sweetness. It's enough to keep his fan base happy, that's for sure.

Movie Preview: Miley Cyrus in The Last Song

Are you ready for your second Nicholas Sparks movie preview in as many months? (Last month's was the romance Dear John.) Here it is: The Last Song stars Miley Cyrus (cue The Soup's "It's Miley!" sound bite) as a girl who's dropped off at the home of her estranged father to spend the Summer. Obviously she doesn't want to be there, obviously she falls for a local boy, and obviously she and her father end up bonding.

You couldn't call me a Miley fan, but I do love Greg Kinnear, who plays her well-meaning father. From the trailer, the movie looks very sweet and very schlocky - which is exactly how Sparks usually does it. Interestingly, Sparks was commissioned to write both the screenplay and novel simultaneously, with Cyrus in mind. While I don't know that I'll be rushing to the theater for this one, it's probably something you'd find me secretly Netflixing later on; I'm kind of a sucker for the addictive cheesiness of a Sparks movie.

Movie Preview: Ed Norton and Ed Norton in Leaves of Grass

That double Ed Norton in the title is not a typo; Leaves of Grass stars the talented actor in a dual role, as polar opposite twin brothers.

As twins, Norton really goes for it - one twin, Bill, is straight-laced, while the other, Brady, is a mulleted hick with a heavy Southern accent. I've missed Norton's presence, but I'm wondering if this is going to a be an amazing acting opportunity or an embarrassing diversion for him. Joining him in the cast sans outrageous accents is Keri Russell, Susan Sarandon, and Richard Dreyfuss. It's a little hard to tell the tone of the movie from the trailer; it's been described as a comedic thriller, but I can't tell if it wants to be Adaptation or Joe Dirt.
