Did the Academy Snub Whoopi?

Today there has been some fall-out about some of the editing choices made with the many montages featured in this year's Oscars ceremony. One of the bigger ones is the omission of Whoopi Goldberg from the Oscar hosts reel. As the ladies of The View discuss in the clip below, Whoopi's hosting broke several records, so it does seem strange that they would leave her out.

On the other hand, I don't envy producers of these award shows, given the egos in this business and how impossible it would be to assuage all of them.

Rosie O'Donnell Says Bye-Bye to "The View"

After a brief stint with plenty of controversy, Rosie O'Donnell announced today that she's leaving "The View," according to the Associated Press. The cause - or at least, the official cause - was that the host and ABC failed to come to a contractual agreement amenable to both of them. O'Donnell will leave the show in June.

As for the real reason, it's anyone's guess, since O'Donnell has been a lightning-rod of somewhat trivial scandals since joining the show. The AP reports:

Walters was frequently left to clean up the damage after O'Donnell. She did it most recently Monday, when O'Donnell was criticized for using bad language and attacking Rupert Murdoch from the dais of the annual New York Women in Communication awards luncheon.

To me, the Rosie controversy always seemed totally overblown; I mean, aren't talk show hosts supposed to get people talking? Plus, she was hardly any more ridiculous than Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and she gave "The View" a huge ratings boost.

I'll be most interested to see who the daytime talk show will get to host next. For a show with such ridiculously high personnel turnover, "The View" always seems to stumble when it comes to new hires. Who would you like to see fill Rosie's seat?

Jay Baruchel and Nate Torrence Talk Dating, Their Own Number Ratings, and Scenes They Hate

In She's Out of My League, Jay Baruchel plays a guy who inexplicably starts dating a gorgeous girl who friends have rated a "hard 10." Nate Torrence plays one of his friends, and the two very funny actors recently sat down to talk about the movie, becoming friends on set, and the controversial scenes they wish had never made it in the film.

On whether they knew each other and their other costars before filming:

Nate: No, we didn't know each other at all. But that's what's nice, you spend six weeks in a city, you get along pretty well. That's what was cool with this movie - the four guys specifically, TJ [Miller], Mike Vogel, Jay and me. We got to hang out quite a bit and we like each other. What we've been talking about is how that really plays into the movie, that you can kind of tell that we all got along and have the same sense of humor, and that makes for some fun moments.
Jay: It's kind of cheesy, but my happiest thing about the movie is that I came away from it with a bunch of best friends. I really enjoy this kid's company like crazy. I have to say I was a bit of a fan of his before the movie.
Nate: It's not like I had this long resume . . .
Jay: I can do every Capital One character.
Nate: And I would do Million Dollar Baby for him.

On whether they've dated anyone "out of their league.":
Nate: I'm currently married to someone way more attractive than me. We've been together since we were 17 - we got married when I was 20 - and I remember being like, I am proudly not going to ever get anyone more attractive. I do remember going, "Wow, this is pretty neat." So I will definitely say that I relate to She's Out of My League. I do actually believe a lot more in my character's point of view in movie than what the other friends are trying to say. I don't think it's all about numbers.
Jay: I don't either, and for my money, I'm a catch.
Nate: For a long time, he thought it was 15, not a 5. That was a really hard day, breaking it to him.
Jay: The movie we were making in my head was completely different.

On assigning themselves number ratings, like the characters in the movie:
Jay: Oy.
Nate: I will say, I'm a little intimidated by the advertising.
Jay: It's terrifying.
Nate: Did you see they put me as an eight?! I'm in Hollywood at Wilshire and I thought it was going to be, like, a three. And I love myself, but I wasn't ready for that. Because that's when you have the trolls come out and say, "Why's he an eight?!"
Jay: I think unfortunately, I have to echo what he said. I agree with his character's view of things: You are what you are in your heart.
Nate: You're a ten no matter what.
Jay: You're a ten no matter what.

On whether guys in real life talk the way the characters do in the movie:
Jay: Yes, but it's not nearly as intricate as in the movie. It's more like yeah, she's good looking and she hasn't gotten bored with me yet. These are the conversations behind closed doors. . . They ring true in that the authenticity is in the intention. They're earnest, you know. I'm not one of those dudes, so I don't talk about that stuff. And I think what we're real proud of about those scenes specifically, is that, unless we failed miserably, we don't come off as douche bags. We very specifically were trying to combat the Alpha-male-misogyny-frat aspect of that because none of us are like that.
Nate: And I think the truth is, too, maybe the judgmental stuff comes from the guys who are rated higher than what our characters are in the movie. When you're a bunch of nine guys hanging out it's like, "Oh she's got too big of a butt!" But you get a bunch of fives around, and it's like, "Wow, she's looking over here." Maybe that's why. We're not models.
On what makes She's Out of My League different:
Jay: I think that there are certain movies that have left a legacy and set the tone for how other movies are made, but how it's changed is, truthfully, the emergence of more of the regular guy, and not just the movie regular guy. In movies it's like clearly, oh, that's the main guy because he dresses a certain way and is cordial to everyone. We're trying our best to show four quintessential average American dudes hanging around. But again I stress that to me what separates ours from other movies is that we're just not crummy guys. Nate's married and has two kids, Mike is married and has two kids. We very desperately wanted to be genuine and authentic and as crass as boys get. But I'm also a momma's boy; I live two blocks away from my mother so I didn't want to do anything that would upset her.

On whether there were any scenes they wish hadn't been cut:
Nate: I just watched a blooper reel, and I guess the thing is, most of the things that get cut are just different ways to say a line. But as far as actual scenes -
Jay: There are scenes that I wish weren't in the movie. I really wish that my mother never had to see me prematurely ejaculate!
Nate: I'm with you: There are scenes a man should never have to show his son.

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Before the Oscar hubbub quiets, maybe now is the time to check out a few of the nominees from the comfort of your own couch. This week's new DVD releases include two best picture nominees that you may not have seen yet, along with a documentary for a bit of brain food.

Up in the Air

In Up in the Air, director Jason Reitman brings us the story of Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), the grim reaper of job employment. Bingham zips between companies to orchestrate layoffs, using his disconnectedness to get the job done. However, once an uptight protege (Anna Kendrick) and a love interest (Vera Farmiga) enter the picture, Bingham begins to question his lonely-by-choice stance. Even though it was ultimately overlooked for Oscar statuettes, this one was one of my favorites of the year. DVD extras include a deleted scene with George Clooney in a spacesuit (really) and the video for a song I liked from the film, Sad Brad Smith's "Help Yourself."

Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire

I got major goosebumps during the Oscar clips of Precious in Sunday's telecast. So much that it almost made me want to view it a second time around - and that is saying a lot. The film centers on Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), an undereducated pregnant teen living with a terrifyingly abusive mother (Mo'Nique). It's hard to watch, yes, but the message is surprisingly hopeful. Not to mention, Mo'Nique's performance has undoubtedly been one of the most buzzed about this entire award season. Rent it for her scene at the social worker's office. It's jaw-droppingly good. DVD extras include a featurette with Oprah and Tyler Perry and a two-and-a-half-minute clip of star Gabourey Sidibe's audition.

One more release to check out when you read more. Capitalism: A Love Story

When it comes to TV, I'm a lot more likely to be tuned in to NBC than CNBC - which is precisely why I'm adding Capitalism: A Love Story to my queue. In the documentary, Michael Moore launches an expose on the current economic conditions, interviewing state representatives and knocking on the doors of big finance organizations like AIG. Despite anyone's personal feelings about the director, you have to admit that it's a timely subject worth exploring. DVD extras include deleted scenes and a clip of Jimmy Carter addressing American excess consumption all the way back in 1979.

How Many of the Best Picture Nominees Have You Seen?

Four? Seven? All 10? We were recently taking our own tally at Sugar HQ, and several editors have been trying to squeeze in last-minute viewing parties of the Oscar nominees they've missed out on before tonight's big award gets handed out.

But what about you? Hopefully, by now you've already seen the ones most likely to win, but take my poll, and tell me how many you've seen. Here's the full list of titles to refresh your memory: Up, Avatar, The Hurt Locker, The Blind Side, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, A Serious Man, District 9, Precious, and Up in the Air.

Buzz In: Have You Ever Held a Themed Viewing Party?

Looking through the gallery of photos from the Mad Men season three premiere screening in Times Square made me wonder if, while bunches of people were having a giant screening party in Manhattan on Sunday night, others around the country were having their own private Mad Men-themed parties. I've heard of parties inspired by the stylish period show: guests dressing up in vintage garb while hosts shake up some old-fashioned cocktails.

Have you held (or attended) any Mad Men-themed viewing parties? Or what about Lost-themed viewing parties, complete with island decorations and Dharma-supplied snacks? What other shows would make for good themed parties?
