ABC Making The Time Traveler's Wife Into a Series?

I wonder if adapting Audrey Niffenegger's novel The Time Traveler's Wife would have worked better as a TV series in the first place, rather than trying to cram a lifetime of time traveling and intense romance into one movie. But now that the movie has opened in theaters, how will there be a television series about Henry and Clare?

It's a question ABC is apparently ready to tackle. It appears that the network is teaming up with Friends creator Marta Kauffman for a weekly series based on the novel, and it's apparently something that ABC and Kauffman have been trying to develop "for years." Here's more:

ABC executives believe the complex plot of the original novel will work well in series form, since Kauffman will be able to explore the romantic relationship at the core of the story over the course of several seasons.

Individual episodes will likely feature self-contained storylines as well.

I felt that the film adaptation was a bit of a letdown; I can't imagine how a TV series will be much better at this point. But at the same time, I'm intrigued to find out how they'll try to do it. Do you think this story lends itself better to a television series? Or are they just sucking out all the magic of this story by continuing to mess with it?

Box Office: District 9 Invades at No. 1

Movie audiences favored the aliens and the action this past weekend as the Peter Jackson-produced extra-terrestrial film District 9 took the top spot with an estimated $37 million. In second place with $22.5 million was last weekend's big earner, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The Rachel McAdams-Eric Bana romance The Time Traveler's Wife opened at No. 3 with $19.2 million, which is apparently "one of the best showings ever for a romantic drama in any part of the year." Julie and Julia and G-Force took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Elsewhere at the box office, Jeremy Piven's comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard took in an estimated $5.3 million its opening weekend, putting it at No. 6, while the teen comedy Bandslam didn't quite make the top 10, grossing an estimated $2.3 million.

The Time Traveler's Wife: Doesn't Fulfill Its Destiny

What makes the book The Time Traveler's Wife so magical is how well it marries two genres: romance and sci-fi. But the big-screen adaptation leans more toward old-fashioned Hollywood love story, with the attendant schmaltz and a touch of slapstick.

Fans of the cherished book - myself included - had many hopes and fears about the film. Although the movie didn't make me swoon, it is satisfying to see the story on screen, and the movie is very sweet in parts. Still, what should be an epic tale and a first-rate tearjerker sadly let me down.

What Are Your Hopes and Fears For The Time Traveler's Wife?

Fans of the Audrey Niffenegger novel The Time Traveler's Wife have been anxiously awaiting the release of the film adaptation, which will finally happen this Friday, Aug. 14. And when I say "anxiously," I mean it seriously - I've noticed a great deal of apprehension from fans who are worried that the movie won't do this mysterious, romantic book justice.

So, fans, what are your hopes for this movie? What aspects or parts of the book would you like to see make it into the big screen version? Do you assume it will be just so so, or do you anticipate being pleased?

Movie Preview: The Time Traveler's Wife

Phew! It's finally here. The fact that we've waited this long for the The Time Traveler's Wife trailer - and the fact that the release date has been pushed back (originally to February 2010!) - had me mighty worried, not gonna lie. I wondered if there were serious issues with the movie that might ultimately delay the release even more, or I thought the studio was ashamed of it! But now the trailer is here and it's just . . . beautiful. And tender, and sweet, and filled with love.

For those who haven't read the book, it's a story about Henry (Eric Bana) and Clare (Rachel McAdams) whose love is unique because Henry can travel through time. Their relationship spans Clare's entire life as Henry travels to various points in Claire's past and future. The movie is now scheduled to open Aug. 14. To check out the trailer, read more.

Build a Soundtrack: The Time Traveler's Wife

I know many of you enjoyed reading Audrey Niffenegger's novel The Time Traveler's Wife and are probably as anxious as I am to see the movie this August (and at least see a trailer one of these days, sheesh!). I hope the movie is as riveting, romantic and poignant as the book was, and I really hope the soundtrack is great. This is one movie for which I'd love to help choose the music.

If you could choose songs to go in this movie, what would you pick? What sounds would go well with the tone of this story? I'd include Wilco's "Far, Far Away" for both its tone of sweet longing as well as the lyrics (like this bit about Chicago, where The Time Traveler's Wife often takes place: "I long to hold you in my arms and sway/ Kiss and ride on the CTA"). I also like the idea of using a "time" song, like the Rolling Stones' "Time Is on My Side." And the Death Cab for Cutie song "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" has about the same "emotional destruction" factor as this book itself does (in a good way, of course).

Hurray! Time Traveler's Wife Now Coming August '09!

Once upon a time, I naively believed The Time Traveler's Wife was going to be released in late December of 2008. So I anxiously awaited a trailer for this adaptation of one of my favorite books. And the trailer never came. Then: Disaster! The release date was apparently (and quietly) pushed back - way back - to February 2010. This drastic move combined with no news about the project made me concerned that something was amiss.

Just as I was working on readjusting my high expectations to a lower, more manageable level, more news: The movie now has an August 14, 2009 release date. I don't know what to think or expect from all this date-shifting! I just know that I would love to see a trailer one of these days.

Maybe the studio is simply struggling to find the perfect weekend for unleashing this love story starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. I don't know. I'm bewildered, but I'm going to just take this new release date as a positive sign and hope for the best. What do you think? Are you laughing at me because of my intense passion for this movie, or are you right there with me?

Time Traveler's Wife Author Sells Second Book For $5 Million

First, the good news for fans of Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife: A second novel is on the way and it's titled Her Fearful Symmetry.

Now, the good news for Audrey Niffenegger: She sold this new book to Scribner for $5 million dollars! This is an enormous amount of money for an advance during any time, but it's particularly stunning right now given the economic climate and the shaky fiscal ground on which the publishing world is balancing.

I so enjoyed The Time Traveler's Wife (and really can't wait for the movie to come out, which is now supposedly slated for February 2010 - ugh) and I'm glad to hear Niffenegger has continued writing. Given the enormous success of her debut novel and this huge sum of money for a second book, she's up against some seriously high expectations. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope the best for her sophomore effort. To find out what the next novel is all about, read more.

The novel concerns a pair of mirror-image twins, Julia and Valentina Poole. The twins are young, sheltered American girls who inherit a flat on the edge of Highgate Cemetery in London, bequeathed to them by their recently deceased aunt. Julia and Valentina are inseparable, and function almost as one being, although in temperament they are opposites. As the story begins, they arrive in London to live in their aunt's apartment.

Ron Livingston Joins Time Traveler's Wife

Ron Livingston certainly does not have a case of the Mondays. According to Hollywood Reporter, the star of Office Space has signed on for a role alongside Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana in the film adaptation of the bestselling book The Time Traveler's Wife. Here's more:

The book tells the story of a dashing librarian (Bana) at Chicago's Newberry Library who has a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel. He must help his wife cope with the many complications of his disorder as the two are often out of sync.

Livingston will play the man's friend, a liberal attorney who works for nonprofit organizations.

Well, that's nice. I'm tentatively excited about this project so far, since the cast does seem solid. On the whole, I'm still a little wary of adapting this powerful, beautifully written novel into a movie. Yet as far as the casting news goes, it's been pretty much so far, so good.

Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams to Play the Time Traveler and His Wife

Well, now it's official: Rachel McAdams will play the title role in the film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling novel The Time Traveler's Wife, and Eric Bana will play her husband, the time traveler himself. The novel is about Henry and Claire, whose love withstands the fact that Henry sometimes leaps through time when he is stressed out.

I read this book - loved it - and find it difficult to imagine a film version, but with actors like these two, my fears have been allayed ... for now. I'm most apprehensive of how the time travel aspect itself will be handled, since there are so many ways to make that seem silly. The book was rather sophisticated about the whole thing, chalking up Henry's ability to a genetic disorder, not unlike Hiro's situation on "Heroes."
