Buzz Gift Guide: Gifting Granny

Welcome to the next installment of my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. I've already thought up some holiday gifts for mom and dad this week, so today we're moving onto a very special lady: Grandma!

It can be hard to think of entertainment-related gifts for grandmas because of generational (not to mention maybe technological) gaps. But I thought of some gifts I know my grandma would get a kick out of, and to be honest, I wouldn't mind receiving a few of these myself!

For example, take this collection of movies starring Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart - a pairing that captivated an entire generation on and off the silver screen once upon a time. I'm ordering this up for my grandma and I look forward to viewing them with her.

And how cute is this I Love Lucy merchandise? My favorites are the purses. I've also included The Price Is Right on DVD (Bob Barker's entire final week!), a great Ella Fitzgerald Christmas album, a subscription to Soap Opera Digest, and a DVD set of classic Paul Newman films (grandmas still swoon, ya know).

Drew Carey Comes On Down Today

The Price Is Right starts its 36th season today with a whole new look - and, of course, a whole new host. Drew Carey is now at the head of contestants' row following Bob Barker's retirement this spring, and I'm curious to see how he does with one of the most iconic jobs on TV.

Carey isn't the only thing new about this season of Price. To usher in the new era, the show has a new logo (which still looks refreshingly 1970s) and a colorful new backdrop. But all the other important things - like, say, Plinko - are still in place. Plus, this fall's contestants apparently get the shot at winning some of the most expensive cars ever given away on the show.

It's going to be hard not to compare Carey and Barker - but here's hoping Carey can make this new era of Price his own. To watch a clip from the first show with one very excitable contestant, just read more

Drew Carey, Come On Down!

Well folks, it's official: Drew Carey is the new Bob Barker. I truly had no idea he would actually be made host of "The Price Is Right" when I posted the poll this morning, but what timing! The majority of you who voted thought Carey could pull off this gig, so here's hoping you're right about that. He certainly has a goofy appeal, so I think he'll do just fine - though of course, nobody can ever replace old Bob.

Now I'm wondering if Carey will be able to sufficiently crow Barker's signature line "Come on down!" Or perhaps Carey will usher in a new "Price Is Right" tag line?

Could Drew Carey Host "The Price Is Right"?

Now that we've stopped reeling from the possibility of Rosie O'Donnell inheriting Bob Barker's hosting gig on "The Price Is Right," the next rumored name making the rounds is Drew Carey.

Variety is even reporting on the speculation, saying "Carey makes a lot of sense for the Barker job, given his mainstream, blue-collar appeal. His comic roots - and a past gig on the ABC improv show 'Whose Line Is it Anyway' - also give him the ability to think quickly on his feet."

This is all true, though I wonder if Carey has Barker's particular brand of charisma that makes the show such a daytime favorite. What do you think?

Could Rosie Replace Bob on "The Price is Right"?

Fresh from his final spin of the big wheel and his 19th Daytime Emmy Award win, Bob Barker kept making headlines over the weekend by saying Rosie O'Donnell could follow him as host of "The Price is Right."

In the press room after the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, Barker said of O'Donnell (who, by the way, actually took out a full-page ad in Variety to express interest in the job):

"She knows the show. There's no doubt in my mind she could do the show. Now, whether they want a lady host, I don't know. I've never heard that discussed. As far as I know, they've only auditioned men."

I'm not quite sure how I feel about Rosie hosting "Price" (on the one hand, she has the energy for it; on the other hand, she's pretty polarizing), but I just have to mention Barker using the words "lady host." In anyone else's mouth, that would sound a little sexist, but coming from him, it's oddly quaint and endearing. Oh, Bob. I'll miss you.

By the way, other people mentioned as possible replacement hosts have been Todd Newton of E!, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight," George Hamilton, John O'Hurley, and Mario Lopez, though that last one was apparently just a rumor. So, do you think Rosie could do it?

The 2007 Daytime Emmy Award Winners

Everyone will miss dear old Bob Barker now that he's officially done hosting "The Price Is Right," but perhaps the pathway is cleared for someone else to win the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host, since Barker just took home his 19th award. Another popular winner at the 34th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards this year was "Sesame Street," which won Outstanding Pre-School Children's Series along with two awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series (Elmo and Oscar the Grouch). Hey, it's not your favorite kids' educational program for nothing.

Happily, "The Ellen Degeneres Show" won not once, but twice - taking home awards for Outstanding Talk Show Host as well as for Outstanding Talk Show. Paula Deen also took home two awards, for both Outstanding Lifestyle Program ("Paula's Home Cooking") and Oustanding Lifestyle Host. I like Paula well enough, but I think I'm more of a Giada De Laurentiis ("Everyday Italian") kind of gal.
