Would You Want to See Sequels to The Good Shepherd?

The 2006 CIA historical thriller The Good Shepherd didn't totally wow the critics and I've heard many viewers complain that the movie is too long and not all that interesting. Even so, the Robert DeNiro-directed project did earn an Oscar nod and it boasts a stellar cast.

Now DeNiro is talking sequels - yes, plural. Variety continues:

De Niro said he would like to make two sequels to CIA Cold War drama The Good Shepherd - one bringing the action forward from 1961 to 1989, the other following its hero, Edward Wilson (Matt Damon), up to the present day.

Martin Scorsese will be a producer on the sequels as well.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Penelope Cruz was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this Spanish-language film, written and directed by her beloved Pedro Almodovar. In this ghost story/mystery, Cruz plays Raimunda, whose deceased mother's spirit returns to her town to settle some unfinished business. As was the case with Almodovar's All About My Mother, the fantastical story is driven by a group of strong-minded women with the male characters taking a far back seat.

The Good Shepherd
Though admittedly on the long side, The Good Shepherd must have done something right to be nominated for Best Art Direction at this year's Oscars. Robert DeNiro ably directs this twisty and dark 1960s tale about the origins of the CIA. Matt Damon plays the morally upstanding Edward Wilson, whose world becomes increasingly shrouded in suspicion as he finds himself more and more entrenched in the Agency's secrets. Angelina Jolie costars as Edward's wife.

Twin Peaks: Season 2

If you've never seen "Twin Peaks," then get your hands on Season 1, stat. David Lynch's bizarre and addictive saga is truly one of the best-crafted series to have ever aired on TV - thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Kyle MacLachlan. But if Season 1 is a masterpiece, Season 2 is still a long-awaited gem for fans. The show hadn't quite plummeted into ridiculousness just yet, and we find out who killed Laura Palmer.

Oscar Nominee: The Good Shepherd for Art Direction

Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. In this final week, I'll be looking at the nominees for best art direction, which encompasses the entire look and feel of a film from the scenery to the lighting. Yesterday, we saw a gallery from Dreamgirls, and today's featured movie is director Robert De Niro's The Good Shepherd.

Starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, The Good Shepherd tells the story of the CIA's origins with convoluted plot twists and sinister undertones. Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Perfect Little Accident"

It's another chapter in the chronicles of old Chief vs. new Chief on Grey's Anatomy this week, as Derek and Richard continue to dance around each other at the hospital. All the doctors go into a frenzy when a celebrity of the medical world comes in - and, as it turns out, he's Jackson's grandfather.

On the personal side of things, Mark starts sleeping with everyone in sight to help get over Lexie, as his ex gets chastised for her relationship with Alex. It's not a mind-blowing episode, but to recap just read more.

Derek may be the Chief of surgery now, but that doesn't mean the college-style aspect of his life is any different. He starts off his day walking in on a scantily clad Lexie all ready to seduce Alex, and things don't get any better at the hospital when he finds Sloane gettin' hot and heavy with a drug rep.
Speaking of Lexie and Sloane, both of them are pretty missed up (yet hilarious) since their breakup. Who knew that each part of the equation would be so lost without the other? Sloane just starts sleeping with anyone he can find (which includes the daughter of one of his patients, ew), while Lexie puts all her efforts into convincing her colleagues (and herself) that she doesn't have real feelings for Karev. Though Lexie stands up to Karev in the end, I'm not buying it - whether or not she wants to be with Alex, she definitely deserves to be with someone nicer.
The Teddy-Owen-Cristina love triangle becomes a square of sorts when Arizona adds herself to the mix, but only as a friend. I was happy to see that someone finally reaches out to Teddy since she's in such an awkward situation (and one that only keeps getting weirder). Teddy and Owen continue to exchange (or "steal," as Arizona says) meaningful glances, as Teddy and Cristina continue to oscillate between bickering and bowing down to each other's respective skills. At the end of the episode, Cristina boldly declares to Meredith that she "loves" Teddy. I know she meant it in a platonic way, but it would be kind of an amazing twist to see Cristina and Teddy shack up and leave Owen behind.
Throughout the episode, Derek continues to struggle with figuring out how "a Chief does things." Despite his new professional look (which Meredith gleefully scoffs at), he's still inclined to let Richard take the lead - particularly when Harper Avery, a highly renowned doctor, arrives in need of surgery. However, by the end of the episode the roles have reversed and Derek takes charge, coaxing Dr. Webber into performing a surgery in spite of Dr. Webber's misgivings about his own ability. As far as I'm concerned, we're just slowly building up to a climax that will put Dr. Webber and Dr. Shepherd head-to-head in a competition for the crown.
So Jackson gets flack from all the doctors for hiding his secret amazing grandfather, Harper Avery. He and Meredith bond over the pressures of having relatives who are famous in the medical world, but Jackson spends most of the episode whining. I'm glad they are trying to develop the newbies a little more (speaking of which, did the Mercy ladies fall off the map?), but between the recent tirade about "being too pretty" and now his complaints about nepotism, he's starting to sound like a cry baby. Someone might want to tell him that there are worse things in life than having good looks and amazing networking connections.
Is Izzie just never coming back? At this point, her name isn't even mentioned anymore. To be honest, I don't really miss her, and the show seems just fine without her. What are your thoughts?

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "State of Love and Trust"

There's a new sheriff in town on Grey's Anatomy this week, and his name's Derek Shepherd. Instead of a shiny badge, Derek comes brandishing a snazzy new outfit (complete with tie!) to move into his new office, greet the surgeons as their chief, and most important - square off with Webber yet again.

Elsewhere, Lexie and Mark continue their relationship issues, Cristina gets burned (literally), and Bailey gets her confidence shaken by a patient. If you're ready to break it down, just read more.

The Cristina/Teddy/Owen love triangle is intensifying, though it's so much more than two women fighting over one man. In fact, this week Cristina is caught between Owen's "caveman-like" libido and the surgeries Teddy can offer her at the hospital. Cristina ends up choosing Owen, but it seems to take a fair amount of coaxing - and she seems genuinely sad when Teddy reveals her personal disappointment. We already know that Cristina cares more about her job than her love life, but I'm ready to see how she reacts when Owen and Teddy inevitably hook up.
In this week's "everyone's worst nightmare" story line, Bailey and Meredith have a crisis situation when their patient wakes up during surgery. Naturally the patient is freaked out and refuses to let Bailey operate on her thanks to Bailey's terrified reaction in the OR. Bailey typically beats herself up over it but manages to exchange a few flirtations with the anesthesiologist in the process (after giving him an undeserved verbal lashing, that is).
As Derek breaks in his new office with a basketball hoop, Richard has to make a choice between quitting or going to rehab. He's understandably tired of letting Derek boss him around, but only Bailey can get through to him in the end about getting his life together and taking back what's rightfully his. Meanwhile, Derek plays the good guy and rehires the staff that had gotten the boot. Anyone else smell an "I told you so" moment in a future episode when Richard returns from rehab and Derek's plan goes horribly awry?
Grey's wouldn't be Grey's without all the soapy relationship drama, but I actually found myself feeling for Lexie this week. I fully agree with Callie that he's being a baby (especially given his whole history with cheating), and the final scene in the elevator was kinda heartbreaking. On the other hand, does Lexie even want him back if it means a life of living with his adult daughter and grandchild? Whose side are you on?
