What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below, you now have the opportunity to view Jessica Simpson's much maligned Blonde Ambition in the anonymity of your own home. It only goes up from there, so moving on.

The Game Plan
This family-friendly movie stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Joe Kingman, a pro football quarterback who suddenly finds himself caring for a seven-year-old girl played by Madison Pettis. She shows up unexpectedly and informs him that she is his daughter and needs a place to stay while her mom is out of town. The macho quarterback is forced to explore his softer side for the next month as he takes on his new parental responsibilities, like ballet class and homework, while also getting to know his daughter. You can imagine the hilarity that ensues from the tension between leading his team to a championship season and understanding the world of little girls.

Highlights include Kyra Sedgwick as Joe’s workaholic agent and entertaining bonus features that will be especially fun for younger kids and sports fans. Those bonus features include Stuart Scott of ESPN hosting a look at the fictional star quarterback in the film and an ESPN SportsCenter interview with The Rock on how he learned to play a quarterback for the movie. All in all a cute flick for a night in with the family.

Sydney White
A lot of you mentioned that you'd wait to watch this one on DVD, and now, here it is! A twist on the classic fairy tale, Sydney White follows a college freshman (played by the always adorable Amanda Bynes) in her quest to follow in her late mother's footsteps and pledge the Kappa Phi Nu sorority when she arrives at college. More tomboy than natural born sorority girl, Sydney is instantly faced with a serious roadblock to rushing bliss: sorority leader and student council president Rachel (Sara Paxton), who has vowed to make life hell for Sydney. Along the way, Sydney meets Tyler (Mat Long), a frat guy who takes a liking to her and moves in with seven misfit boys in an outcast frat on Greek Row known as the Vortex (get it? those are the dwarfs). This fun, satirical jaunt through college life will satisfy any Amanda Bynes craving you might have this week.

Box Office: 30 Days of Night Sucks Up All the Money

Not a lot of folks are going to the movie theaters lately, but those who are seem to be most interested in the super scary vampire flick 30 Days of Night, which came in at No. 1 at the box office with $16 million. What with all the highly dramatic dramas coming out, maybe it's understandable that people are drawn to the fun unreality rather than checking out movies that address the starkest aspects of human life.

Only one of the weekend's anticipated dramas even cracked the top five at the box office: Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone came in fifth place. At No. 2 was Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? while Disney's The Game Plan held steady at No. 3, and Michael Clayton followed up in fourth place. Rendition opened in ninth place to the tune of just over $4 million. The Halle Berry/Benicio Del Toro weepie Things We Lost in the Fire came in fifteenth place, while Reservation Road - only playing in a handful of theaters - came in at No. 39.

Box Office: Tyler Perry's No. 1 Movie

This past weekend at the box office was one of the most surprising I’ve seen in a long time. Tyler Perry’s play-turned-movie Why Did I Get Married? took the No. 1 spot by a long shot, finally knocking The Rock’s Game Plan into second place. The George Clooney starrer, Michael Clayton, leapt up the list to No. 3 as it expanded to wide release. Clayton just barely came in above the drama/thriller We Own the Night.

The Heartbreak Kid weakly rounded out the top five bringing in $7.4 million. Most surprisingly, the talented, good-looking cast of Elizabeth: The Golden Age couldn’t save the movie from its measly $6 million take. The period piece landed in sixth place.

This upcoming weekend audiences have their pick of drama (Things We Lost in the Fire), more drama (Reservation Road), thrills (Gone Baby Gone), more thrills (Rendition) and horror (30 Days of Night).

Box Office: It Pays to Have a Game Plan

The Farrelly Brothers and Ben Stiller are left broken hearted today after their bawdy comedy The Heartbreak Kid failed to draw in the masses at the theaters. Taking home just $14 million its opening weekend, The Heartbreak Kid came in second place at the box office, behind the family friendly Game Plan starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The Game Plan is enjoying its second weekend of being No. 1 at the box office after its successful opening weekend.

The Kingdom continued to do well with action flick fans, coming in third place with $9.3 million. Resident Evil: Extinction came in fourth place with newcomer The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising following up in No. 5. The George Clooney legal thriller Michael Clayton didn't thrill a whole lot of moviegoers; the movie came in twenty-first place with $704,000 for the weekend.

Box Office: The Game Plan Lands No. 1 Place

In a surprising turn of events - even for people behind the movie itself - The Game Plan, a PG-rated family-friendly flick starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, came in at No. 1 at the box office this weekend. The Disney movie far outpaced the action-war film The Kingdom, which took in $17.7 million and the No. 2 spot. Variety speculates whether The Kingdom's weak opening is an indication of audiences' reluctance "to see films addressing the consequences of the war on terror."

Favorites from last weekend held over: Resident Evil 3: Extinction came in third place with Good Luck Chuck following it at No. 4. 3:10 to Yuma continued to hold its own in its fourth weekend, coming in at No. 5. Feast of Love didn't even make it into the top ten and brought home a slim $1.7 million.

This weekend we'll see if Ben Stiller and Co. will be breaking any hearts at the box office with The Heartbreak Kid.

Brad Pitt Enters the Dark Void

Introducing Brad Pitt, computer game star: the actor's production company Plan B has signed off on a deal with Capcom to adapt the game Dark Void for the big screen with Pitt as the lead. Void follows a pilot who crashes in the Bermuda Triangle and finds himself in an alternate universe fighting off aliens intent on taking over the human race.

This seems more like Will Smith territory to me - I immediately think of something along the lines of I, Robot or I Am Legend. Even so, I welcome the chance to see Pitt in a sci-fi action movie, and this storyline sounds tailor-made for the blockbuster treatment.

FlashForward Breakdown, "Playing Cards With Coyote"

After Al's tragic suicide on last week's episode of FlashForward, this week shows how the idea of "changing the game" has affected all the characters. Mark and Olivia start to find new hope for their relationship, Lloyd teaches Simon a lesson, and Aaron learns more about where his daughter has been for the past two years.

"The future can be changed": Al's death makes headline news when Celia gets her letter in the mail, instilling hope in Mark and Demetri - for a bit. Mark whisks Olivia off on a romantic getaway and things seem to be much happier between the two. But once they're back to regular life, they both get a reality check: Mark gifts her the lingerie she's wearing in her flash forward, and Aaron's reunion with Tracy makes Mark go back to believing that the visions may be set in stone.

The stars are aligned: Mark thinks he has a big lead when some footage shows up of a man he recognizes from his vision - a woman named Ingrid reports a crime and her phone images reveal a man with a tattoo of three stars on his arm. Thinking it's the same pern who breaks into his office in the future, Mark immediately dedicates himself to finding the guy. Using Ingrid as bait, Mark manages to take kill him, and rushes home to Olivia to tell her that they're going to have a second chance because he changed the game. But then - surprise! There's a whole crew of dudes with that tattoo. Um, seriously Mark? This never occurred to you? It's not like the guy has an unmistakable tattoo of Edward Cullen on his arm.

That was a crazy game of poker: Feeling guilty about that whole deadly experiment thing, Lloyd sends out an email to a few colleagues saying "We have to take responsibility." Of course, Simon isn't pleased about Lloyd's plans to go public and wants to settle their argument over a game of Texas hold 'em. There's plenty of trash talking from Simon, who thinks that he and Lloyd are gods for the impact they've had on the planet. He tosses around ideas of fate (was anyone else thinking about Lost's Charlie and his fate finger tape?) and just when Simon thinks he's sitting pretty, Lloyd turns the tables with a sleight of hand. (Some U2 lyrics come to mind here). Somehow I still don't think Simon is going to make it easy for Lloyd to publicize what they've done.

Reunited and it feels so good? Tracy is back at home with Aaron, but she's not exactly the same girl that went off to war. She's lost her leg in combat and suffering from PTSD, which she's reluctant to discuss with her dad at first. Feeling confident from his flash forward, Aaron encourages Tracy to open up about what happened overseas. She finally reveals that her near-death experience was an ambush from Jericho, a group of military contractors that she ratted out after seeing something she shouldn't. Tracy is paranoid after living a life on the run for two years (and is not at all pleased when Aaron talks to Mark about her situation). Though keeping track of all the different characters and their separate story lines is getting confusing, I'm liking this new development in Aaron's story.

Other plot points:

Janice tries to quit but Stan won't let her. As she continues to contemplate Al's death and her vision, she starts looking into sperm donation - does this mean those are tears of joy in her flash forward?

Ingrid says that she remembers one of the shooters saying "QED," which is also brought up during Simon and Lloyd's poker game.

Ingrid and her bird collection can be added to the list that already includes the crows and the bird crashing into Fiona's window.

So, is that Simon strangling Nicole in her vision? Creepy. I'm wondering if she finds out his secret and tries to intervene.

The Office, "Murder": Best Lines of the Night and Video!

Well, I do declare! This week's The Office was silly good fun. Distraught over rumors of bankruptcy, Michael suggests that the employees engage in a murder mystery game called Belles, Bourbon and Bullets to keep their spirits up. Pam's recent bad attitude seems to lift as she gets into character, and Andy uses the opportunity to ask Erin on a date. (I can't wait for when those two finally hook up!)

Ready to take a look at some of my favorite quips from the episode (and share your own in the comments)?

Jim: "With all due respect to everyone here, I think the most worthy opponent of you is you."
Dwight: "That is correct. Unless there happen to be measles present."
How awesomely ridiculous is the opening scene where Dwight tries to fight himself during his own karate instructional?! That right there is why Rainn Wilson gets nominated for Emmys.

Check out Erin delivering yet another great quote this week! I'm curious to see what the writers do with her character, especially now that they're setting up this will-they-or-won't-they thing with Andy that's slightly reminiscent of another Office couple.

Leave it to Dwight to concoct a plan when news of the company's money loss hits the Scranton branch.

"Operation got me through my vasectomy, i.e. my operation. I don't think I would've been able to endure my breakup with Holly had it not been for Toss Across."-Michael
Michael explains his use of board games as a coping mechanism to Jim, but my favorite part is when he plays "Lullaby" by Sean Mullins on his computer to wallow in his sadness. Anyone else remember that song? Love the '90s nostalgia!

Kevin: "Now do the Swedish Chef."
Andy: "I'm not familiar, what province is he from?"
Kevin: "He lives on Sesame Street, dumbass."
Andy does such a good job with his Savannah accent using his "molasses" technique that oddball Kevin asks him to talk like the Swedish Chef from Sesame Street. But I have to mention Creed -I was dying when he shows up to the office, hears about the "murder," and speeds off in his car! Also, kudos to the crime scene with Meredith and to Oscar for putting on the strangest accent I have ever heard. Check him out in this video:

Sad thing is, Michael's probably telling the truth.

So what's your assessment of the evening? It sounds like there are tough times ahead for everyone, since David Wallace says the company will be out of money by the end of the year. Buzz In: Who Should Get Their Own Rock Band Game Next?

Following in the footsteps of this Fall's release of The Beatles Rock Band, similarly seminal band The Who may also get their own version of the game. Roger Daltrey has been quoted as saying that it's planned for next year, but the news is still unconfirmed by reps for the game. More certain is the fact that you probably won't be able to smash the peripherals when you're done playing.

Honestly, though, the thing I'm most excited about is the road ahead for more acts to get Rock Band games. I'm a fan of The Beatles Rock Band and would love the chance to play another band's catalog. Rock Band has already hit up Metallica, Guitar Hero's already gotten Aerosmith; I think it makes sense to have a Rolling Stones game, or perhaps Led Zeppelin or U2. Maybe they could even use a younger band like Green Day or Pearl Jam? Which band would you like to see get their own Rock Band game?

Pattinson and Jackman and Weisz? Oh, My

Robert Pattinson, Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz starring together in a movie? That's hot.

The period drama is titled Unbound Captives and follows a woman (to be played by Weisz) "whose husband is killed and her two children kidnapped by a Comanche war party in 1859. She is rescued by a frontiersman, to be played by Jackman. Pattinson will play the son." First-time director Madeleine Stowe will be working with her own screenplay which she wrote, under the pseudonym O.C. Humphrey, with her husband. She'd originally planned on starring in the lead role herself, but ultimately decided to direct. She says she saw three actresses and just knew that Weisz would be good for the role. Interestingly, Robert Pattinson agreed to be in the film last Fall, "before everything broke with Twilight."

There's no question that Pattinson and Jackman are hot actors - in that they're attractive (Pattinson even has his own sexy faceoff game over on Pop) and rather popular right now. And I've always thought that Rachel Weisz is one of the most beautiful actresses of our time (just my humble opinion), so, just like I'm going to see The Brothers Bloom in which she stars with other cuties (Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody), I'll probably see this movie no matter what.
