The Beautiful Life Gets Cancelled After Only Two Episodes!

The CW has pulled the plug on The Beautiful Life after airing only two episodes. The ratings were dismal for the premiere and apparently things weren't looking up after the second week on the air. This makes TBL the first of the new Fall shows to be canceled after two other new CW shows - Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaries - were both picked up for more episodes. Sad news for Mischa Barton, the rest of the cast, and producer Ashton Kutcher. So, are you disappointed to see The Beautiful Life go so soon?

TV Tonight: 90210 Is Back - Will It Be Better?

I don't know about you, but my love-hate relationship with the CW's 90210 reboot has endured. Therefore, I'm feeling both trepidation and excitement for tonight's return of the show.

When we last saw our troubled friends from the famous zip code, all kinds of drama was a brewin': Something is seriously wrong with Silver based on her erratic mood swings; Ethan caught Annie using Rhonda's sob story in acting class and is not too pleased with her; and Naomi's hot bar guy, Liam, is peeved at her for sending him back to high school. It's all very sordid and complicated and has potential to build into good TV so I've got my fingers crossed for tonight.

New 90210 boss Rebecca Rand Kirshner has promised that this week's episode, titled "Life's a Drag," marks the beginning of improvements we'll be seeing from here on out. I'm cautiously optimistic, as already word is spreading that the new sheriff in town isn't afraid to make some major and much-needed changes (like this one - huge spoiler, so click with caution).

One thing the show was missing? A real bad boy - and it looks like they're going to fill that hole with Liam tonight via . . . drag racing? Hmmm. Also there's this from the CW: "Silver takes a class assignment a little too far when she creates a video that documents her love for Dixon." I'm wondering if by "her love for Dixon" they mean "sex tape?" Sorry, pulling head out of gutter now.

Gossip Girl Spinoff News: It's All About Lily!

OK, this news is blowing my dome on so many levels. First of all, the news itself:

After months of gossip and speculation, [Gossip Girl] creators/exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are proceeding with a spinoff that will serve as a prequel to the hot sophomore drama and chronicle the wild teen years of Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

So. . .

Now we know it is all about young Lily, which is fine by me. Schwartz said he didn't want to "upset the chemistry" of the current cast and I think that's smart.
L.A. in the '80s?! Yeah!
Schwartz says he is also "inspired by the opportunity to tell overlapping stories and introduce characters that will appear in the past and the present - and hopefully enrich both shows," which is so time-warpy and kind of fun. Think of the possibilities! If we meet Lily's first boyfriend in the spin-off, say, he can show up on Gossip Girl later to wreak havoc. That's some synergy, folks, and I like it.

How do you feel about this? Good news? Bad news? Do you wish another character were getting the spinoff instead?

First Look: Valentine

The CW's new Sunday night programming block starts in early October, and of the four new shows, I'm most curious to check out Valentine, which is about a family of Greek gods who now live among us in a world where Mount Olympus is just off the freeway from LA's Laurel Canyon.

My reasons for being excited for the show are twofold: I've seen the whole "historical figures from such-and-such a time try to navigate modern society" concept work before (anyone else ever watch Clone High?), and I'm glad to see another alum of The OC - Autumn Reeser, in this case - get a job. There's also the whole thing of having Aphrodite, Eros, and Hercules shacking up together, which has the potential to be amusing, especially while they're living out their mission of helping everyday folks find love.

Of course, it also has the potential to be quite cheesy, and from the first promo, I can't tell for sure which way the show is leaning. There are some funny bits (Eros has foregone arrows in favor of a love gun), but there's also an over-the-top feeling about it all. It's enough to make me want to check out an episode, though. Susanne Daniels, the executive who wooed Project Runway to Lifetime, has stepped down from the position, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
TV Guide reports that ABC has renewed Jimmy Kimmel Live through 2010.
TV Week has a story speculating that The CW might be on its way out.

TV Tonight: The Reaper Season Finale

Well, the silver lining around this season finale cloud is that Reaper is definitely getting another season on the CW! This is excellent news, and maybe the summer will provide folks with some time to catch up on the first season of this bizarrely funny, fantastical show.

It feels like just yesterday I was super skeptical about the premise of this show (a bounty hunter for the devil? He uses a vaccuum? What?) and then quickly won over by the quirky humor and lovable cast when I viewed the pilot. I'm thrilled to know that it will live again on the CW for another season.

As for tonight's finale, titled "Cancun," here's the description: "The demons target Sam (Bret Harrison) when they fear he may pose a greater threat to their rebellion than the Devil (Ray Wise) himself. A treacherous trap is set, bringing surprising allies to Sam's side and leading to shocking revelations that could have explosive implications for his future. Meanwhile, Sock (Tyler Labine) falls for a demon (guest star Cindy Sampson)."

Should Dan and Serena Be Together?

Last week on Gossip Girl Serena came clean about her big secret to everyone . . . except Dan. All season we've watched Serena "protect" Dan from her past, but this is more of a mess than ever.

Heading into tonight's season finale, Dan is still in the dark about lots of things. My question is: Do you think he should stick with Serena if/when he learns the whole truth? Or do you think Serena's blown it with him because she never trusted him? He is (as Rufus put it) pretty judgmental, so maybe he just needs to cut the girl some slack. What do you think?
