Superbad Sequel or a Superbad/Pineapple Express Hybrid?

It looks like Michael Cera (or maybe someone pretending to be Michael Cera) has been thinking "aloud" (or via Twitter) about future Superbad projects. He first twittered that he wants to do a movie with Jonah Hill and Jason Bateman (ending with the words: "Good idea?!"), and then he followed up with this one:

Decided I'm gonna contact Jonah and Jason tomorrow. See what they think about doing a movie. Maybe, just an idea, but maybe Superbad 2.

But that's not the only Superbad-related idea to be tossed out there - apparently James Franco has mentioned a Superbad/Pineapple Express combo film, with the movies' directors each taking on half of the movie. Franco mused about the plot, "Somehow the kids get in trouble and we have to get them out of it. And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we'd have to kill one of them off."

I have to say, it's a funny image to consider: Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Cera) - and of course Fogell/McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)! - on a hilariously ill-fated adventure alongside the bromantic stoners Dale (Seth Rogen) and Saul (Franco) - and Red (Danny McBride)! But just a straight sequel with the Superbad kids would also be pretty funny. Which idea do you like better?

2007: Year of Apatow

I said it back in May, and it's still true as the year winds down: Judd Apatow is everywhere. The man whom the Los Angeles Times named "the mayor of comedy" had two of the Summer movie season's biggest hits, signed on for several more highly anticipated projects, had a New York Times Magazine cover story all about him, and generally became a household name - not bad for a self-described schlub in an unglamorous polo shirt. The Votes Are in: Best Comedy, Drama and "Little Movie" of 2007

This month I've been polling you guys on everything from who you think the best breakout TV star is to which on-screen movie romance you think was the best of 2007. Now lets see which actors, movies, albums, and TV shows earned the top honors. Drumroll please . . .

Best Comedy of 2007: Superbad
This is an Apatow-loving crowd, apparently: Superbad won Best Comedy, though Knocked Up was fairly close behind it. The other comedies barely stood a chance in this competition. Popular write-ins include Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and Death at a Funeral.

I myself voted for Knocked Up, though it took a while to choose between that one, Superbad, and Hairspray (it's just so feel good!).

Best Drama/Thriller of 2007: Zodiac
The votes for this poll were much closer, with Zodiac winning by about 30 votes over Disturbia. Right behind that thriller was No Country For Old Men, though Gone Baby Gone very nearly tied with the Coen Bros. film, and one notable write-in was for Before the Devil Knows Your Dead.

This was perhaps the most difficult poll of all because there were some really solid dramas this year. I ultimately went with A Mighty Heart, but it was agonizing to choose between that, Gone Baby Gone, and American Gangster.

Best Little Movie That Could: Waitress
Waitress took the top honors by a long shot as your favorite "little movie," though Darjeeling Limited and Lars and the Real Girl were nearly tied for second place. Popular write-ins included Once and Juno.

I had to go with Waitress as well, for it occupies a tender place in my heart, but I thought almost all of the little movies on the list were well done.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the following movie picks, the sixth season of 24 is now on DVD if you wish to relive that particular experience.

Superbad
This Apatow-produced comedy is bawdy, fun and hilarious. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera star as best buddies facing the end of their senior year at high school. For one fateful night they team up with the goofy yet supremely confident Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) - who obtains a fake ID that says his name is simply McLovin - to party, get girls and generally live it up before graduation. The boys find themselves having crazy funny and bizarre misadventures, all with a raunchy tone a la American Pie (but much funnier).

The special features for this film sound like a ton of fun, from the gag reel to the cast audition footage (clips from the auditions of Michael Cera, Jonah Hill and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) to something called "Michael's Voicemails from Jonah."

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
This third in the Pirates trilogy was a huge crowd pleaser this past summer. In the last of the swashbuckler series, Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) team up with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to liberate our beloved Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and travel to Singapore to confront a scary Chinese pirate played by Chow Yun-Fat.

If you obtain the two-disc set of the film you'll find a solid offering of extras, including several featurettes on the film's production, interviews and a blooper reel.

Box Office: It Takes a Brave One to Be No. 1

The Jodie Foster/Terrence Howard thriller The Brave One reached the No. 1 spot at the box office over a relatively slow weekend, bringing in approximately $14 million. Variety reports that the main audience for the film was older women, and that its continued success will depend on whether men will be drawn to see it as well.

3:10 to Yuma just barely beat out Mr. Woodcock for the No. 2 spot, with the Western raking in $9.15 million while the gym teacher comedy grossed $9.10. Dragon Wars (or D-War) came in fourth place and Superbad continued to please audiences (and, consequently, studio heads), taking the No. 5 slot.

This weekend looks like it offers a little bit of something for everyone, from The Jane Austen Book Club and Resident Evil 3: Extinction, to Good Luck Chuck and Sydney White. Oh, and that other Western flick with good-looking men, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford also opens this weekend.

3:10 to Box Office Gold

I wasn't the only moviegoer wowed by the remake of the Western 3:10 to Yuma this weekend as the movie took the No. 1 spot at the box office. According to Variety, the film "appealed primarily to men over 25" but, um, I'm pretty sure there was plenty there for the ladies to enjoy as well.

Halloween continued its killing spree at No. 2 while the ever-entertaining Superbad followed up in third place. Balls of Fury is funny enough to come in fourth place and, of course, The Bourne Ultimatum has yet to be knocked from the top five, coming in fifth place this weekend with $5.4 million. Surprisingly, my man Clive Owen and his totally entertaining, bloody movie Shoot 'Em Up opened in sixth place to the tune of just $5.45 million. Hopefully the second weekend's the charm for the lovely Clive and his gory, funny movie.

Box Office: Halloween Slashes to No. 1 Spot

This holiday weekend, Rob Zombie's reimagined remake of horror classic Halloween took the box office crown, bringing in $31 million in sales over its three-day opening.

Superbad continues to do impressively well - this weekend the bawdy flick came in second place, just before ping-pong comedy Balls of Fury. The Bourne Ultimatum continued to be successful, coming in fourth place, while Rush Hour 3 followed behind at No. 5.

This upcoming weekend promises some interesting choices at the theaters: There's the gritty remake of the Western 3:10 to Yuma, the Clive Owen/Paul Giamatti action film Shoot 'Em Up and, for lighter fare, there's The Brothers Solomon starring Will Forte and Will Arnett.

Box Office: Superbad Has Super Staying Power

Teen raunch comedy Superbad continued to get tons of McLovin from audiences this weekend as it reigned at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Overall, this weekend's box office sales were somewhat unusual, with older movies taking the top three slots before the new releases. The Bourne Ultimatum came in second place - a nice accomplishment in the movie's third weekend in theaters - while Rush Hour 3 stayed strong at No. 3.

Mr. Bean's Holiday came in just slightly ahead of Jet Li's action flick War, the two films taking fourth and fifth places respectively. Meanwhile, The Nanny Diaries opened at No. 6 in the box office lineup, raking in just $7.8 million.

Superbad actually has a chance of taking the top slot a third weekend in a row this upcoming holiday weekend. The only real competition comes from Rob Zombie's Halloween and the bumbling comedy Balls of Fury. My money's on McLovin and Co.

Superbad Director Greg Mattola to Helm Another Teen Boy Comedy

This is not Judd Apatow.
With the titles Superbad and Knocked Up being bandied about together as this summer's greatest comedies, it might be easy to confuse the folks behind the two projects. Judd Apatow directed Knocked Up, and was a producer on Superbad. Greg Mattola directed Superbad.

So what's next for Mattola?
Next up, Mattola will be directing another teenage boy comedy, titled Adventureland. Mattola wrote the script as well, and apparently he had just completed it when Apatow contacted him about directing Superbad. Jesse Eisenberg, who starred in The Squid and the Whale, will play the lead.

The story is as follows:

Story, set in the summer of 1987, concerns an uptight recent college grad who's forced to take a minimum-wage job at the local amusement park after realizing he can't afford his dream European tour. The experience helps him to loosen up a bit as he finds first love, forms new friendships and matures just in time to enter the real world in the fall.

Sounds like fun.
I'm loving these comedies set in the '80s, and I really enjoyed what Mattola did with Superbad. I gotta say, though, I hope there are some funny parts for girls as well as for the guys in this one.

Box Office: Lots of McLovin for Superbad

Hooray for Michael Cera! Hooray for McLovin'! Hooray for Superbad! The Judd Apatow-produced comedy scored big at the box office this weekend - deservedly so, in my opinion. I absolutely loved this film, and I'm delighted to see that others did as well. The bawdy high school flick brought in approximately $31.2 million over the weekend.

Rush Hour 3 held its own in second place this weekend, raking in $21.8 million. The Bourne Ultimatum continues to do extremely well, too, following up in the No. 3 spot with $18.9 million. The Simpsons Movie took fourth place, which is pretty good seeing as it's been in theaters for three weeks now and still manages to make the top 5. The Invasion didn't do so hot when it was released this weekend bringing in just $6 million, though it did take the No. 5 spot just ahead of Stardust.

Next up this Friday we have Jet Li's War, Mr. Bean's Holiday and The Nanny Diaries competing with Superbad for the box office crown. What do you think will win?
