Do You Watch TV on Vacation?

This holiday weekend, many folks will pack as much fun and relaxation into these end-of-Summer days as they can. When I was growing up, this often meant spending a few days at the beach - and turning off the TV. In an effort to actually interact with each other and enjoy the outdoors, we tried not to watch television while on vacation. Even now, all these years later, I still avoid the tube during vacations if I can.

What about you? Do you make an effort to stay away from the television while on vacation? Or is it TV as usual no matter what?

Is it really September already? I cannot believe it's Labor Day weekend and the Summer is drawing to a close. Before we start focusing on the films coming to theaters this Fall, though, let's cast a look back at the dog days of Summer and the movies that came with them (and made this season a box office record-breaker). I'll list the ones I found most enjoyable, and I hope you chime in with your favorites from Summer '09 as well.

Buzz In: What Kinds of Books Do You Read on Vacation?

Just as we Sugar girls are chatting about our favorite Summer reading picks (speaking of: if you take our quiz on our favorite titles, you can be entered to win a Kindle!), NPR has posted a list of the top 100 Best Beach Books Ever, as chosen by almost 16,000 readers. It's a fascinating mix of light and breezy reads, lengthy and sobering tomes, and plain ol' classics that people might not have time for during their regular routines.

I expected the first 10 titles on the list to be fairly easygoing reads since beach time, to many, is when we relax everything - including our brains. But The Kite Runner comes in at No. 3, and while it's immensely engrossing, it is hardly a "breezy" pick.

So what do you read on vacation? Do you just want something easy and fun? Or is a week of free time the best opportunity to tackle the heavier or more challenging books on your "to-read" list? To take a look at what tops the NPR list and share your thoughts, read more.

Is This a Better Summer For Movies Than Last Year?

Every Summer boasts a ton of new movies - usually big blockbusters that are sure to bring in the mega-bucks. Last year we got some doozies (namely, The Dark Knight) and this year there are many as well (including a Harry Potter movie). Do you think the Summer of '09 has a more impressive movie offering than the Summer of '08 did? Check out some of last Summer's movies and some of this Summer's films.

ABC Brings TV Show From the Writers of (500) Days of Summer

What if the Friends loft and Central Perk were infiltrated by hipsters? We might find out soon, because ABC has just struck a deal to make a sitcom called Friends With Benefits from the writers of this Summer's indie rom-com (500) Days of Summer.

Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber have been given the green light to bring their show to TV, saying, "It's about a group of twenty-somethings at a point in their lives that everyone can relate to, when they ask questions like: 'Is this your girlfriend or someone you just hang out with? Is this a job, or is this a career?'"

It's a familiar concept, but a pretty timeless one - relationships can always be mined for fodder, and when you add young, good-looking actors, you have a recipe for potential success. It's not a far cry from (500) Days, which finds a new way to detail what happens when boy meets girl. I thought the movie was sweet despite its too-hip leanings, so I'd probably watch this. Oh, and the Wedding Crashers director is attached to shoot the pilot. Intrigued yet?

Zach Galifianakis - Love Him or Leave Him?

What is up with the Zach Galifianakis fame train?! After this Summer's The Hangover, I keep hearing his name. He's already invaded Sunday nights on HBO's Bored to Death, and he has a slew of upcoming films, including a comedy with Robert Downey Jr. and a dramedy opposite Amy Adams. Now, he's reportedly picking up an animated film credit, too, lending his voice to Humpty Dumpty in the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots.

Could Galifianakis be the next Will Ferrell? Seems like a worthy successor to me - then again, you already knew that I'm a fan of his. Tell me how you feel: love him or leave him?

Owen Wilson to Bring Marmaduke to the Big Screen

Marmaduke, the comic strip about a giant-sized Great Dane and his owners, finally has a voice. Owen Wilson - who's no stranger to working with dogs, given Marley and Me - has just signed on to lend his voice to the trouble-making pooch in the half CGI, half live-action film set to hit theaters next Summer.

Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of the animated and live-person combo. It rarely works when actors are talking to cartoons (one exception being Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), but obviously I'm not the target audience here. Plus, Marmaduke does have some of my favorite people in it, including Judy Greer and Lee Pace who both play humans in the film, and hopefully the movie will offer us adults a dose of humor, too.

Do you think Wilson is a good choice to voice Marmaduke? Anyone you would've rather seen in the role?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Love Him or Leave Him?

Ever since 500 Days of Summer, I haven't been able to get Joseph Gordon-Levitt off my brain. (And yesterday's trailer for Women in Trouble doesn't help!) It's not like I didn't pay attention to him before - I loved 10 Things I Hate About You - but my adoration for this guy is ballooning faster than his career.

Gordon-Levitt has loads of projects coming down the pipeline: his upcoming film Uncertainty just got picked up, and he has Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio and Hesher with Natalie Portman both slated for release next year. Sure, he's kind of an indie guy, but I'd love to see him come into his own as a leading man. (Perhaps he'll even take on the Jack Ryan series someday?)

All right, so I've gushed enough, but am I alone in my crush? Do you see the JGL appeal that I'm talking about, or is he still just the geeky guy from 3rd Rock From the Sun? What do you think of Joseph Gordon-Levitt - love him or leave him?
