This holiday weekend, many folks will pack as much fun and relaxation into these end-of-Summer days as they can. When I was growing up, this often meant spending a few days at the beach — and turning off the TV. In an effort to actually interact with each other and enjoy the outdoors, we tried not to watch television while on vacation.

Is it really September already? I cannot believe it's Labor Day weekend and the Summer is drawing to a close. Before we start focusing on the films coming to theaters this Fall, though, let's cast a look back at the dog days of Summer and the movies that came with them (and made this season a box office record-breaker).

Just as we Sugar girls are chatting about our favorite Summer reading picks (speaking of: if you take our quiz on our favorite titles, you can be entered to win a Kindle!), NPR has posted a list of the top 100 Best Beach Books Ever, as chosen by almost 16,000 readers. It's a fascinating mix of light and breezy reads, lengthy and sobering tomes, and plain ol' classics that people might not have time for during their regular routines.
I expected the first 10 titles on the list to be fairly easygoing reads since beach time, to many, is when we relax everything — including our brains.

Every Summer boasts a ton of new movies — usually big blockbusters that are sure to bring in the mega-bucks. Last year we got some doozies (namely, The Dark Knight) and this year there are many as well (including a Harry Potter movie). Do you think the Summer of '09 has a more impressive movie offering than the Summer of '08 did?

Are you ready for your second Nicholas Sparks movie preview in as many months? (Last month's was the romance Dear John.) Here it is: The Last Song stars Miley Cyrus (cue The Soup's "It's Miley!" sound bite) as a girl who's dropped off at the home of her estranged father to spend the Summer.

What if the Friends loft and Central Perk were infiltrated by hipsters? We might find out soon, because ABC has just struck a deal to make a sitcom called Friends With Benefits from the writers of this Summer's indie rom-com (500) Days of Summer.
Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber have been given the green light to bring their show to TV, saying, "It's about a group of twenty-somethings at a point in their lives that everyone can relate to, when they ask questions like: 'Is this your girlfriend or someone you just hang out with?

It seems I wasn't the only one to think that Zachary Quinto's Spock stole the hot man show in Star Trek last Summer. Quinto is attached to the upcoming indie film Whirligig, playing a guy who becomes friends with the adopted son of the woman he's pursuing.
Not only would this be Quinto's first major role post-Star Trek, but he'd be the leading man in a romantic comedy-drama.
