Well, it looks like 21, the film about MIT students who take Vegas by storm, was a safe bet as it easily won the top spot at the box office. However, the overall weekend box office total was down 17 percent compared to last year, Variety reports. 21 earned an estimated $23 million, beating Horton Hears a Who and firmly establishing Jim Sturgess as a viable leading man.

It's an oft-lamented fact that movies about the Iraq war don't do very well — either in box office sales or with audience favor in general. There are plenty of reasons for this, but the fact is it's a challenge for filmmakers to put out movies about a controversial war that isn't yet over. With Stop-Loss, the filmmakers have attempted to make the topic more appealing by getting MTV on board, using popular good-looking young actors and featuring plenty of quick-edit montages set to rap songs.

After shattering 2008 box office records last week, Horton Hears a Who once again took the top spot over this Easter holiday weekend. Stop-Loss, starring Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, examines the difficult government policy by which soldiers who have completed their terms of service can be called back to serve again. Phillippe plays a soldier who refuses to return to service, despite being recalled to duty. It's a prickly issue, and so far I'm impressed by how the trailer makes it look like the movie doesn't shy away from examining the various sides of the matter.

While these new characters have updated traits and hobbies (emo! YouTube!) they are, as some have pointed out, more or less the new versions of the original cast.

Gossip Girl may not have great ratings, but it certainly has the eye of the teen demographic. The show and its stars scored a total 14 nominations for the 2008 Teen Choice Awards today, easily the most of any nominee.
In the music categories, Chris Brown was the clear leader with nine nominations.

The Teen Choice Awards came back with a bang on Sunday, as Miley Cyrus took to the stage to host this year's show (and the stars got themselves dressed up and made up all pretty for the occasion).
We won't get to see all the action — which is supposed to include a dance battle between Miley's M&M Cru and Step Up 2's ACDC, a la their ongoing YouTube feud — until Monday night, when the show airs on Fox starting at 8 p.m. EDT and PDT.

Even more so than the Zooey Deschanel-Paul Dano pair-up, this movie casting news has me all swoony. Zooey will star alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in — what else? — an indie film, this time titled 500 Days of Summer.
