My Favorite Men of Ireland

St. Patrick's Day is a good time to honor some of the wonderful, handsome, and talented actors born of Ireland. Not only are these men easy on the eyes, but they have also accomplished so much. From inhabiting memorable characters to writing and directing movies, this is a stellar group of men who come to us courtesy of that little green isle.

TV Tonight: How I Met Your Mother

The Hollywood writers' strike ended more than a month ago, but tonight, it will finally start to feel over, as three CBS Monday comedies - The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Two and a Half Men - return with new episodes for the first time in months.

Of them, I'm most excited about How I Met Your Mother, which returns in its new 8:30 p.m. time slot with a St. Patrick's Day-themed episode called "No Tomorrow," in which Barney convinces Ted to toast the Irish by partying like there's . . . well, you know. This isn't the episode with Britney Spears, unfortunately - we have to wait another week for her highly anticipated guest spot - but there's a little Vanessa Minnillo action, if you're into that.

To prepare for the show's return, the cast members filmed a little video talking about their favorite episodes from the show's two and a half seasons (not surprisingly, Robin Sparkles is involved). To check it out, just read more.

Do You Seek Out Irish Entertainment on St. Patrick's Day?

Happy St. Paddy's Day to ye! On this yearly holiday when many American folks wear green and clumsily attempt Irish brogues, how do you celebrate? Do you seek out movies that have to do with Ireland, or find someplace where you can hear Irish tunes? Or do you just down a green-tinted beer and call it a day?

Movie Night: Honoring St. Patrick's Day

In honor of St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, this week's Movie Night involves movies that feature Ireland. It was hard to decide on just three Irish-themed films, since so many more have struck a chord in me. When pressed, however, I'd say these are my favorite films about the Emerald Isle.

The Commitments
This 1991 film follows ambitious Jimmy Rabbitte, a young man determined to form an American-style band in Dublin. He gathers an army of talented - if misfit - musicians whose tempers don't exactly harmonize. The movie is full of humor, passion, and really great music from artists like Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.

In the Name of the Father
I watched this grueling, emotionally charged biopic in a world history class many years ago and was struck by the injustice of the case: Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day Lewis) is wrongfully accused for a 1970s IRA bombing. His "confession" is extracted by means of brutal police interrogation, and Conlon's father (Pete Postlethwaite) is also falsely implicated. Emma Thompson plays the lawyer who fights to uncover the truth. The film is superbly directed by Jim Sheridan, the driving force behind two other excellent Irish films: In America and My Left Foot.

Waking Ned Divine
The premise for this movie is hilarious: Irishman Ned Divine dies from shock when he learns that he's won the national lottery. Unwilling to let his winnings go unclaimed, the village enters into a pact to pretend Ned's alive so they can collect his money and split it amongst themselves. It's a little like Weekend at Bernie's except, you know, clever.

Announcing the 2009 Emmy Winners!

Well, the Emmys are over, and we have our full list of winners. Were you guys surprised by this year's picks? (Check out all my Emmy polls here.) I thought the show started out pretty unexpectedly when underdogs Kristin Chenoweth and Toni Collete took home trophies, and there were a few other surprises along the way. Towards the end, though, the big wins seemed pretty predictable with Mad Men for drama, 30 Rock for comedy - no surprises there.

I had a lot of favorite moments of the night - more on those later - but mainly, I just enjoyed seeing Neil Patrick Harris as host. I loved everything from his opening to Dr. Horrible, and most of you thought his opening number was pretty great, too.
