Men Love Love, Too

As Valentine's Day approaches, I've got romantic movies on the brain. Apparently, so do many men! According to a recent U.S. study, men are more fond of romantic movies than originally suspected. Kansas State University psychology professor Richard Harris surveyed 250 men and women, having them watch a romantic film together and rate it from 0 to 7, 7 being the highest. The average score from women was about 6, while men rated the films around 4.8 - much higher than expected. The Reuters article continues:

"Everyone thinks that women like romantic movies and that they drag guys along to them," Harris told Reuters.

He said movie studio executives should put aside stereotypes about "chick flicks" and recognize the fact that there is a moderate interest among men in romantic movies.

"There are a lot of men who go to these romantic movies and enjoy them. I wouldn't write off the male audience just because it is a romantic film. I would suggest marketing to the men in the audience," he said.

I for one am all for getting rid of the term "chick flick," and I'll tell you why if you

read more A label like "chick flick" is an automatic deterrent when couples are trying to choose a movie they'll both enjoy. Also, nowadays "chick flick" implies something insubstantial and silly, which seems to become a comment on women and the kinds of things we find interesting and relevant. Ultimately, movies don't have to have a gender assigned to them. Sometimes a romantic film is just a romantic film.

Valentine's Cards For Your Double-Hearted Time Lord

Since Time Lords have two hearts, we presume their Valentine's Day celebrations are doubly romantic. BBC America must agree as they released a set of free Doctor Who love coupons to send to your own Time Lord or special companion. With nods to the mysterious power of regeneration, the Doctor's favorite meal, and promises of a fez, this card will make a Whovian swoon.

If a loving look at all things Who isn't enough for you, the BBC finally announced that the filming of the show's next season begins on Feb. 20 in Cardiff, Wales. The Ponds are returning to the story line, but it's clear they'll be leaving the series for good next season under sad circumstances.

Rachel McAdams stepped out solo yesterday to pick up groceries at Whole Foods in Santa Monica. She's had a busy month and it all culminates tomorrow with the release of The Vow. Rachel wore a strapless Vivienne Westwood dress to Monday night's LA premiere, where she met up with her onscreen leading man Channing Tatum. Rachel's real-life love Michael Sheen skipped the event, though he recently shared a romantic lunch date with Rachel. Michael and Rachel have been going strong since first striking up a connection while filming Midnight in Paris. The Woody Allen-directed film is nominated for best picture at the Oscars, and we'd love to see Michael and Rachel together at the Feb. 26 ceremony.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams posed side by side at The Vow premiere in LA last night. Rachel paired dramatic red lips with a strapless Vivienne Westwood dress and nude Christian Louboutin heels while Channing suited up in gray. Channing's wife, Jenna Dewan, hit the carpet in a bright mini, though Rachel's boyfriend Michael Sheen wasn't on hand to celebrate. Channing, Jenna, and Rachel followed the screening with an afterparty at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where guests snacked on a Ralph Lauren-designed wedding cake. The movie hits theaters on Friday, just in time for Valentine's Day, which we're already gearing up for with a look at 100 hot PDA pictures. Bella is willing to do anything to protect the life of her baby, Edward will do anything to save Bella, and Jacob tries to keep his wolfpack at bay. The movie goes quickly from cheesily romantic to surprisingly graphic, but the film is very loyal to the book. DVD extras include a six-part making-of documentary, a wedding video, a Jacob featurette, and a commentary track with the director.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) reunite for this holiday-themed sequel, the third part in their drug-fueled comedy series. This time, the guys have grown apart (Harold is now a husband in the suburbs while Kumar is a slacker in the city), but Christmas Eve hijinks force them to work together and grow close again. The boys - and Neil Patrick Harris - are as raunchy as ever, but this installment is as funny as the original, and festive to boot. DVD extras include deleted scenes.
