Chuck's in, FlashForward's Out! Who Else Is in Danger?

The Fall TV season is finally getting fleshed out, as word is rolling in about which of your favorite shows will be coming back - and which we can give a fond farewell. In today's most recent hirings and firings, Chuck is saved! I'm so glad I continued to watch this beloved show despite it being on the bubble (I guess NBC really listened to the fans!).

But in sadder news, the original Law & Order is finally being laid to rest after 20 years on the air. In its place, NBC is reportedly picking up a West Coast version of the show, Law & Order: Los Angeles. Over at ABC, FlashForward has been canceled after being on the rocks, but V is still in.

UPDATE: NBC's Heroes has been officially canceled.

ABC Renews 12 Series: Betty, Private Practice, Grey's, More

In addition to considering a number of pilots for the Fall TV season, ABC is committing to bringing a dozen shows back. The network announced today that it's picking up 12 series for an additional season, including its entire regular Thursday and Sunday night lineups.

That means the embattled Ugly Betty - which has dropped in the ratings this year and was pulled for a few weeks while ABC tried comedy on Thursdays - will be back, along with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Sunday's America's Funniest Home Videos, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers and Sisters will all be back as well.

The other series picked up are Lost (which we basically already knew) and the reality shows The Bachelor, Wife Swap, Supernanny, and Dancing with the Stars. More shows can still be renewed between now and May's Upfront presentation.

I'm not sure any of those are huge surprises - even though Betty seemed in danger earlier this season and Private Practice didn't perform that well till it started airing after Grey's. But it's still interesting to see pieces of ABC's future plans falling into place. What do you make of the news? Any shows you're sad to see left off the renewal list so far?

The Hills: Yup, Still Alive for Season Four

Get ready for more eyerolls and almost-certainly-manufactured drama: The Hills - the show oh so many people love to hate and/or hate to love - isn't going away anytime soon. The show has just been picked up for a fourth season (not to be confused with the current "season three, part two") that will start in August.

According to Us Weekly, the new season will have 19 episodes following what Lauren, Whitney, Audrina and the gang do this Summer. Which, I'm guessing, will be approximately the same thing they do the rest of the time. Oops, that was bitter. It's just that . . . well, I've admitted before that The Hills is one of my guilty pleasures, but how long can this show really go on? Nineteen more episodes is a long time to spend feeling guilty!

So, the question. For all you Hills lovers, are you still on board for a season four, or are you starting to feel a little bit over it? And for the Hills haters in the audience, well, feel free to vent your anger in the comments below.

ER to Return for a 15th Season - with Old Stars on Board?

ER has already aired its 300th episode and outlived virtually all the other series that premiered in 1994. Now, it appears that the stalwart Thursday night medical drama is likely to return for a 15th season in the Fall.

The producers seem pretty confident that they'll cut things off after No. 15, though - and so they're starting to court some of the show's former stars to see if they'd be willing to return for one last go-round at County General. Noah Wyle is already set to return as Dr. Carter for four episodes, and Goran Visnjic is expected to pop in as well. Maura Tierney had previously said she'd leave after this season, but it sounds like she'd be around for at least some of this final round.

What about Eriq LaSalle, Julianna Margulies, or - the prize of all prizes - George Clooney? One of the top producers told Entertainment Weekly they'd love to bring everyone back, saying:

"We want to revisit characters that have existed on the show over the years and say where they are now. We'd love to get them all back in some way, but that doesn't mean we're going to. But we're gonna try."

So, ER watchers, tell me: Which former characters would you most like to see return? Are there any you could live without? And, even if you stopped watching ER years ago, would you come back to see Carter, Doug, Carol, Benton, or Corday again?

Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter Cozy Up For a Sweet Sunset Beach Trip

Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter grabbed a seat to watch the sunset on the beach in Venice, CA yesterday. The duo looked cozy despite their divorce being finalized in December. This isn't the first time Michael and Jennifer have been spotted together following their separation since they were seen on a coffee date last month. They also sat together at the SAG Awards, where their TV show, Dexter, was up for best drama and Michael was nominated for best actor. Neither Michael nor the Showtime series went home with any statues, but it looked like the couple had a fun night. Both Jennifer and Michael will be back on the small screen soon now that Dexter has been renewed for a seventh and eighth season.

Dexter's Michael C. Hall Reunites With Ex-Wife Jennifer Carpenter For Coffee

Michael C. Hall and his ex-wife Jennifer Carpenter were spotted in LA getting coffees together on Wednesday. They apparently followed up the caffeine date with dinner at the Peninsula Hotel. The couple split up back in 2010 after nearly two years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized last month. Michael and Jennifer continued, however, to work on their Showtime series Dexter together and seem to still be on friendly terms. It's not clear, though, whether there is a romantic reunion for Michael C. Hall and Jennifer on the horizon. They'll continue to costar on the small screen for a few more years since Dexter has been renewed for an additional two seasons.

Why NBC's Musical Smash Isn't Like Glee

NBC drama Smash is about to burst onto the small screen, and the cast and producers alighted the TCA stage today to talk about how the Broadway-set series will play out. The series follows the production of a musical about Marilyn Monroe, and stars Katharine McPhee, Debra Messing, Angelica Huston, and more chatted with reporters about the characters, the fictional play at the center of the series, and how the show isn't like Glee despite its musical premise.

The Glee comparisons were bound to come up, which executive producer Craig Zadan was happy to address. "I don't think the show is like Glee, but we feel grateful to Glee for opening that door," he said, adding that Ryan Murphy "broke a great record" and made networks believe there was room for a show like Smash.
The producers talked about the outline for the season, saying that season one will follow the preproduction and prep of the musical Marilyn, but it wouldn't be until season two (if Smash is renewed) that we'll actually see Marilyn having its run on Broadway.
Steven Spielberg is an executive producer, and though he wasn't at TCA physically, we got to see a special prerecorded message from the legendary director. While he acknowledged that he's not the first person you think of when you think of stage musicals, he talked about how much he liked the drama of "the exciting world of Broadway."
Debra Messing, who plays a producer, was naturally asked about how this experience compares to working on her last NBC series, Will & Grace. She said you couldn't compare the two series because they're "like apples and oranges," and though Will & Grace was fun, but "the amount of fun I'm having on [Smash] is so ridiculously off the charts."
Addressing a rumor that the fictional musical Marilyn could be a real Broadway show, executive producer Theresa Rebeck dismissed the idea, explaining that the showrunners are simply "aiming to write a great television show," - but that anything could happen.
Star Megan Hilty talked about the presence of theater stereotypes like backstabbing, rivalry, and the casting couch in the series. Hilty, who plays Ivy, a stage actress up for the role of Marilyn Monroe, is a Broadway star in real life, and simply said "It happens" when asked if the stereotypes were true for her own experience. "Those stereotypes are there for a reason," Hilty said, and added that Broadway is a minefield for a TV show. "The drama that happens behind the curtain is way more interesting than what's happening onstage."

NBC News: Chuck and Parenthood in, Plus New Series Pickups

NBC's upfronts aren't until Sunday, but news about the network's Fall TV season is already leaking out. Word on the street is that NBC is renewing Chuck for a fifth season, saving it from its precarious spot on the bubble. Parenthood also looks like it'll be picked up for a third season of Braverman drama.

As for future TV shows, NBC is giving series pickups to a few newbies, including Whitney, a comedy starring Whitney Cummings; musical drama Smash; a remake of the British show Prime Suspect starring Maria Bello; and Up All Night, a comedy with Christina Applegate. NBC will be releasing more news soon on the fate of other new and returning shows, so stay tuned!
