Buzz In: Which TV Character Would You Recast if You Could?

Putting together my list of TV characters who were recast mid-series got me thinking about some current shows that would just be so much better if I could replace a certain annoying, obnoxious, or simply boring actor with another of my choice. How many times have you said, "This show would be so much better if we could just get rid of ______"?

My pet peeve of this TV season was Lindsay Price playing Victory on Lipstick Jungle. I actually really came to like Lipstick over its six-episode run, but Price's acting just always grated on me. More than once, I found myself wishing I could just swap her for Cashmere Mafia's Bonnie Somerville, who I suspected could pull her weight a little more in an ensemble with Brooke Shields and Kim Raver.

What TV character would you recast, if you could? And, bonus question: What actor or actress would you prefer to see in the role?

Turns out the The Starter Wife had a starter ex. When the show returns to USA as a full-fledged TV series, Molly Kagan (Debra Messing) will have a new ex-husband to despise: Peter Jacobson, who played Kenny Kagan in last Summer's miniseries, is now working full-time on House, so his role has been recast, with David Alan Basche taking over as the new Kenny. That got me thinking about other shows that have recast characters mid-series. Want to see the old and new versions of some favorites? Just hit "Start."

Kate Bosworth, Christina Hendricks, and Tom Cruise Celebrate Scorsese in Harper's Bazaar

The Fall is shaping up to be a celebratory season for director Martin Scorsese. In addition to earning his very first Emmy for Boardwalk Empire, his 3D children's film Hugo just debuted at the New York Film Festival to rave reviews. Martin's also the subject of a tribute article in Harper's Bazaar November issue, which is out on Oct. 25, featuring Martin recasting some of his most famous films - make sure to check out behind-the-scenes videos from the star-studded shoot. Kate Bosworth, wearing couture Givenchy, channeled Michelle Pfeiffer's character in The Age of Innocence, while Christina Hendricks and Jack Huston were given the task of re-creating Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz's chemistry in The Gangs of New York. Keanu Reeves and Chloe Moretz took on Taxi Driver, and Emily Blunt went blond for her Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore assignment. Tom Cruise even contributed to the article with a story about working with Martin. Recalling their time on The Color of Money with Scorsese set, Tom said, "When we started working together, Marty would just giggle. And it was wonderful because sometimes in the more violent scenes, like when I got pissed and was going down the stairs and throwing down the briefcase, you could just hear him giggle."

Zooey Deschanel Talks About Her Singing, Attractively Dorky Character on New Girl

Zooey Deschanel is making the leap from movies to TV with her new Fox series, New Girl, and the actress chatted at the TCA today about her sing-happy character, Jess. Her costars Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone (who play her roommates and BFF, respectively) also attended, along with showrunners. Check out what Deschanel and her colleagues had to say about Jess's wacky behavior and how much the cast enjoys each other.

Deschanel's character, Jess, was described as "an attractive dork" by the producers, with series creator Liz Meriwether saying that she wanted to create someone who was "out there . . . a different female character." In Deschanel, Meriwether thinks they found "the perfect match of character and actress," saying she wasn't sure they could have done the show without the actress, though the part wasn't written for her. "I'd like to think it was," though, Deschanel added.
Jess is a character prone to burst into song, which is lucky since Deschanel is also a musician. The singing is "part of how she expresses herself," and Deschanel thinks the singing moments are well-peppered in, depending on her mood or the moment, especially when something is awkward. You'll definitely hear her singing every week, though - Deschanel wrote and recorded the show's theme song.
There has been some cast reshuffling, since Damon Wayans Jr. was originally in the pilot as Jess's third roommate. Wayans, of course, had to be recast since his ABC series, Happy Endings, was renewed for a second season, but his replacement, Morris, won't be playing the exact same character. Wayans's exit will be explained by saying that the character moved out, which the producers think is typical of roommates in their 20s. Morris's character, Winston, will be a former basketball player who's making a new start like Jess, and he has a lot of fans in the cast and crew. Deschanel called him "amazing - you don't know him yet, he's really awesome, we love him."

Recast 90210!

Ever wonder what a TV show would be like if you could be the casting director? Well, now's your chance. The actors who made the characters on 90210 memorable were awesome and all, but what if you could "recast" that series? Who would you pick? For example, what if Dylan were played by Josh Hartnett?
