2009 Tribeca Film Festival Spotlight: Moon

I've been perusing the long list of interesting-looking movies scheduled for this year's Tribeca Film Festival, which starts this week. Some of them, like Moon, are already earning buzz, and I'm anxious to find out what festivalgoers think once they've screened.

Starring Sam Rockwell, Moon is the directorial debut of David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. The movie has already built some momentum from this year's Sundance Film Festival and now there's a trailer for it. And the trailer is creepy.

The movie takes place in the not-so-distant future and follows astronaut Sam Bell (Rockwell) who is completing a three-year stint on the moon where his only company has been a computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey) named GERTY. From the looks of the trailer, all that time alone on the moon starts to seriously affect Sam's emotional state. Most of the reviews so far say that this is a pretty terrific entry to the sci-fi/horror genre that's buoyed by a great performance from Rockwell.

TV Tonight: "Friday Night Lights"

I thought "Friday Night Lights" hit a high point with all the racial tension and family drama in last week's episode, so I'm even more geared up than usual for tonight. The preview for "Black Eyes and Broken Hearts" contains a few tantalizing moments: Julie Taylor appears to be in jail (what's happened to our girl?), Coach pits Guidance Counselor Tami against Wife Tami, and Riggins is told he needs to lead - presumably in the aftermath of last week's walkout.

Sienna Miller Ruffling Feathers With Factory Girl

Sienna Miller's latest movie, Factory Girl, has ignited the anger of one of her favorite musicians, Bob Dylan. Miller plays Edie Sedgwick, the muse of Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce), in the film about Sedgwick's life before she committed suicide. But according to the UK's Guardian,

Dylan apparently believes that the film's depiction of his alleged affair with Sedgwick suggests it was their subsequent break-up that led to her death from a barbiturates overdose in 1971 at the age of 28.

Dylan's lawyer, Orin Snyder, wrote to the film's producers: 'Even though Mr Dylan's name is not used, the portrayal remains... defamatory.'

Dylan tried to halt the release of the film, which was rushed out in the US last week in time to qualify for consideration for the Oscars.

Miller calls herself Dylan's "biggest fan" and is "mortified" by his reaction, claiming that the movie places the blame more squarely on Warhol than anyone else.

Yikes! Well, despite Dylan's efforts, the movie came out in select cities on December 29, but a nationwide release date has yet to be set, fueling rumors that the film did not do well with test audiences. Check out the trailer below and tell me what you think: Will you see Factory Girl?

FX Dishes Out a Preview for Dirt

I'm very curious to watch the new Courteney Cox show, "Dirt," which debuts Jan. 2 on FX. Cox steps out of her comedy comfort zone to play Lucy Spiller, a tabloid editor who makes her living digging into the lives of celebs. If you're curious too, you can now watch the "Dirt" trailer online. The show actually looks grittier than I expected, but I guess I should have known since it's from the network that brought us the wonderfully indulgent "Nip/Tuck."

Movie Preview: Venus

On December 20th, Venus opens, starring the ever-great Peter O'Toole. It looks to be a heartwarming tale of friendship prevailing over a wide generation gap, and it's already getting attention from award committees. The concept of a relationship blooming between an older man and a young woman can easily go in a pretty creepy direction, but from this trailer, the relationship instead seems tender, funny and sweet. The movie will probably make me cry, in a good way, and maybe teach me a few things about art at the same time.

Movie Preview: Shrek the Third

The Moviefone website describes the newest Shrek movie, coming out May 18, like this:

Shrek, Donkey, Puss In Boots and Fiona are back for another fun-and-pun-filled adventure, and this time they're joined by Captain Hook, Sir Lancelot and ... Justin Timberlake as King Arthur?! Long story short: Get ready for some 'Sexyback,' medieval-style.

I'm sorry, but it just seems wrong to merge an animated children's character with the words "Sexyback" and "medieval-style." Regardless, the Shrek the Third trailer was just released today, so check it out.

Movie Preview: Charlotte's Web

This Friday, the movie version of Charlotte's Web, E.B. White's beloved kids book, hits theaters nationwide. Many people, old and young, love this story about friendship and the circle of life, and the movie will probably do well, since it's opening around the holidays, when families have more free time to spend together. Many of the reviews sound mildly satisfied, though the consensus is that the book is still superior. It is such a let-down when widely-loved children's books are not given the respect they deserve (which is what I fear will happen with Bridge to Terabithia!). Check out the trailer below.

While the movie looks cute, it does seem wrong that Julia Roberts is the voice of Charlotte. I know, I know: It seems like I'm wary of Roberts portraying any character I like, but truthfully, Charlotte seems like more of a Judi Densch voice, or Meryl Streep, or maybe Susan Sarandon. She should exude warmth and wisdom, and Julia Roberts doesn't seem quite expressive enough. From the looks of this trailer, though, Steve Buscemi steals the show as the voice of Templeton the rat. Movie Preview: Rocky Balboa Meets Grumpy Old Men

On December 20th, Sylvester Stallone will return to the big screen in Rocky Balboa, the newest installment in a franchise we thought was long put to rest. The premise is pretty ridiculous. In fact, when I saw this trailer before Casino Royale, I joined a packed movie theater in roaring laughter. (Just hit "play" above and you'll see what I mean.) The story centers on an aging Rocky Balboa after he watches a computer-simulated boxing match between himself and the current young, beefy boxing champion. In the virtual world, Rocky is the predicted winner, so Rocky decides to try his hand at fighting the whippersnapper, having at least one computer program that believes in him. He begins training for yet another Big Fight, except this time, he's also up against a variety of ailments and frailties commonly associated with, you know, old age.

It seems like there's no good way to end this movie. A win would be pretty difficult to believe, yet if he loses, we'll have just watched an old man get pummeled. Even Rocky has reservations about returning to the ring, saying "I ain't interested in getting mangled and embarrassed." Judging from the trailer, it looks like it's a little too late for the embarrassed part.

Movie Preview: Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia

I've been waiting on a trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for what feels like forever (more specifically, ever since those first photos of Jake all buff and shirtless).

The preview starts off strong, immediately taking us on an adventure quest that doesn't make any attempt to hide its video game origins. The effects are amazing, though I couldn't help snickering the first time Gyllenhaal speaks in a British accent. The good news is that it looks like the movie has some campy elements and a sense of humor along with all that in-your-face flair. We'll have to wait until Memorial Day 2010 for more, but to see the trailer, just read more.

Movie Preview: Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart

The trailer for Crazy Heart notes that both stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have been nominated for Oscars, and the solemn, raw tone of the film looks an awful lot like awards show bait for these two big talents. Jeff Bridges stars as Bad Blake, a grizzled, hard-livin', lovin', and drinkin' country singer/songwriter who's known for his amazing music, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the journalist he eventually falls for.

We don't see a ton of plot in the trailer, but the story seems like a familiar one, complete with introspection and a soft country anthem that fits the title. Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall also star in the film, which features original songs by celebrated songwriter T-Bone Burnett.
