How Long Should Oprah's Show Go On?

Between her postelection special and her hilarious appearance on 30 Rock, Oprah Winfrey had a pretty huge week last week. But there was one big rumor swirling toward the end of it: that Oprah might quit her talk show in 2011 to focus on starting her TV network.

Oprah's current contract expires in Fall 2011, but her production company, Harpo, said no decision has been made about whether to continue the show beyond that. It's not the first time there have been discussions about the long-running talk show ending: Oprah once said she'd end it in 2006 but obviously changed her mind.

Oprah's show has been around for most of my lifetime, and I honestly have a hard time imagining television without it! How much longer do you think her talk show should go on?

Sunday Funnies: 30 Rock

I know I don't usually recap 30 Rock around here, but after this week's episode - which featured a guest appearance from Oprah - I figured there was no better time to talk about the show. If you haven't seen the episode yet, the whole thing's on Hulu, so treat yourself this Sunday and give it a watch. Some of my favorite moments:

The idea that Jack Donaghy's tranquilizers might lead to "sleep crime."
Liz, under the influence of said tranquilizers, whispering that she was "snitting next to Barpo."
Tracy Jordan's monster claw.
Sweater capes!
Oprah's ninth-grade boyfriend.

If none of this makes sense to you, you owe it to yourself to watch that episode now.

And then there's the moment that had me laughing so hard that I cried so hard that I literally couldn't see my TV. Out of context, it might not even be as funny, but I'm telling you, at the time, it was the most hilarious thing I'd ever seen. Will You Read the New James Frey Book?

Soon after Oprah chose James Frey's A Million Little Pieces for her book club, the memoir became a bestseller. But then it was revealed that Frey had exaggerated and even made up pivotal plot elements and characters in his "memoir." Not only was Frey humiliated in the publishing world, but after Oprah dragged him onto her couch for a difficult-to-watch public tongue lashing, many figured the man would never work again.

Well, he did work again. Frey wrote a novel called Bright Shiny Morning (on bookshelves today) that was given a glowing review by the New York Times in which the reviewer wrote, "He got another chance. Look what he did with it. He stepped up to the plate and hit one out of the park. No more lying, no more melodrama, still run-on sentences still funny punctuation but so what. He became a furiously good storyteller this time."

That is the kind of review that is hard to come by for any author, much less one whose career hit rock bottom in a swirl of controversy and who managed to enrage the queen of book clubs. I have to say I'm intrigued by this excellent review.

Are You More Likely to Read a Book if It's an Oprah Pick?

Oprah's book club has had its ups and downs over the years. On the positive end, the book club often provides huge success for authors when the queen of talk bestows her little golden sticker on a book. Downs have included things like the scandal around A Million Little Pieces, and a public dissing of her book club from The Corrections author Jonathan Franzen.

Ken Follett, author of The Pillars of the Earth, is experiencing some major ups all of a sudden, despite the fact that his book was published in 1989. Once it became an Oprah selection, his book shot straight to the top of bestselling lists and now there's news of a TV series in the works by Ridley Scott's production company.

Yet, despite Oprah's glowing reviews, I still couldn't bring myself to read The Pillars of the Earth because it just doesn't interest me. How about you? Do you take Oprah's word for it when it comes to books?

Do You Want to Watch a Competition About Giving?

Oprah is hoping to convert her daytime success into some primetime interest with a new series called Oprah's Big Give, in which 10 regular people will compete to "outgive" each other in a variety of contests. In the first episode, for example, contestants are tasked with changing someone's life in a big and creative way. The person who does the least to help his or her stranger will be sent packing, while the rest continue on to other charitable challenges.

While a show about helping other people sounds like a good thing - and certainly not the worst use of reality TV ever - it strikes me as odd to send someone home for not giving well enough. Aren't judging and giving sort of opposites? Check out the preview below and let me know what you think. Is this something you're excited to watch?

Oprah Gets Her Own TV Network

It was probably only a matter of time before Oprah Winfrey staked out a TV network of her very own, but now it's official: Oprah will launch her own cable channel, OWN, in mid-2009. She issued a statement saying:

Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I
always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold. For me, the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Network is the evolution of the work I’ve been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show.

The channel will be part of Discovery's cable networks (which also include TLC and the Travel Channel) and will take over for the current Discovery Health network. It won't carry Oprah's talk show, at least at the start, because rights to new and repeat broadcasts are already spoken for through 2011. But the Associated Press reports that some of Oprah's regular contributors could find a home on OWN. Paging Dr. Phil!

Discovery says OWN - a pretty great acronym, if you ask me - will have the same mission statement as the rest of Oprah's ventures: inspiring people to live their best lives. So, do you think Oprah TV would be something you'd want to watch? Or is it all just a little too much?

Disney Studio Head Tops Most Powerful Women List

Speaking of lists today, this morning The Hollywood Reporter held its annual Power 100 breakfast to honor their list of the most powerful women in entertainment. These are some of the industry's heaviest hitters; the Hollywood Reporter names the Power 100 based on "their ability to greenlight content, their position within the company, the number of people who report to them and the amount of money they control." At the top this year is Anne Sweeney, co-chairman of Disney Media Network and president of Disney-ABC Television Group. Oprah came in at No. 8.

Also honored at the breakfast, hosted by Queen Latifah and John Travolta and with 700 invitees, was Jodie Foster, who received the fourth annual Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, "presented to a woman who has been a pioneer or leader in her field" and named after the first woman to head an entertainment studio. In addition, the winners of the Lifetime Movie Network Student Filmmaker Competition were honored. The competition was developed "to encourage and discover the next generation of female filmmakers," which is always something I can get behind.
