The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards are coming our way once again, and as I skimmed the nominees for this year, I started to feel perplexed. Some of the nominees are totally appropriate, but others make me scratch my head, and I could think of other videos from this year that are far more deserving.
Maybe it's a sign of the times, but did you know that there used to be categories for awards like Best Post-Modern Video and Best Concept Video?

Britney's big comeback performance might have been a wee bit disappointing, but there was still much to celebrate at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Justin Timberlake led the field by picking up four awards, including Male Artist of the Year. Rihanna made a splash as well, winning both Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year for "Umbrella."

There's been a lot of chatter today about Britney Spears's three moonmen at the 2008 MTV VMAs on Sunday, but I want to briefly turn our attention to something else: the performances. Last year was supposed to be the big Britney Spears comeback show at the MTV Video Music Awards — but this year marked Britney's real return. Britney won her first VMA (and, before long, her second and third), taking home the moonmen for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."
Russell Brand hosted the 25th ceremony, which included today's chart-toppers putting their own spins on classic songs (Katy Perry singing a snippet of "Like a Virgin," etc).

Amazing, isn't it, that we've had a quarter-century of awesome performances and crazy stunts at the MTV Video Music Awards? This year's 25th installment of the irreverent awards ceremony kicks off tonight at 8 p.m., with a whole bunch of new moonmen just waiting to be handed out.
A few things we know about tonight's show: Russell Brand is hosting, which should mean lots of borderline bleep-able moments.

While last night's VMAs didn't have any crazy stunts, it did have that Britney performance (in case you missed it, watch here). Hey, at least it gave us something to talk about? The rest of the show held some fun moments and a lot of blah ones.

The nominees for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards were announced today, and Justin Timberlake and Beyonce claimed their spots at the head of the pack with seven nominations each. Kanye West and Rihanna weren't far behind with five each, and Amy Winehouse and her famous hair picked up three nods. Those five artists will face off in the Video of the Year category, along with French duo Justice, whose "D.A.N.C.E."

Over on the music blog The Music Slut, I discovered that Blender has put out a list of the 100 Days That Changed Music. Some are more obvious than others, some are somewhat ridiculous (Dr. Dre finding Eminem is No.
