Kristen, Kirsten, Garrett, and Their On the Road Gang Hit the Grand Palais at Cannes

Kristen Stewart hit the red carpet for her Cannes premiere of On the Road this evening. She had the company of costars Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Tom Sturridge, and Kirsten Dunst. Kirsten wore pink Dior, and Kristen was in Balenciaga. The gang spent the whole day together, having attended a press conference and photocall earlier. The movie debuted at the film festival this morning - check out our movie review of On the Road. The picture is based on the classic 1957 Jack Kerouac novel, and in it Kristen plays Marylou, the object of affection for the two main characters, played by Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund. It was a big risk for Kristen, who has actually been attached to the project since producers saw her in 2007's Into the Wild, because it involves more nudity than her Twilight movies.

At today's press conference, Kristen spoke about her character. She said, "I love Marylou. The character is so vivid, she jumps right off the page and slaps you in the face . . . If I had to choose one character who really, truly embodied the spirit of this book, it was her. She really is this amazing link between the two boys. It's a grand statement to make, but it might not have happened without her."

Tom Sturridge didn't bring along his pregnant partner Sienna Miller, but there were plenty of other celeb couples in attendance. Robert Pattinson turned up to support Kristen ahead of his own Cosmopolis debuting at Cannes this weekend. Sam Riley had wife Alexandra Maria Lara on his arm, and costars Garrett Hedlund and Kirsten Dunst were able to mix romance and work on the carpet.

So how do you make your marriage work? Or do you just blindly hope it'll take care of itself?

Think of a hot, successful date with someone you’re attracted to. You have fun, great conversation and more sexual chemistry than a warehouse full of pheromones. You don’t have to “work at” the date because it’s self sustaining. It runs as smoothly as the gliding hand of a classical guitar maestro and you can’t wait for another rendition.

But marriage, or any long term relationship; well that’s a whole other caboodle.

If we’re not careful, marriage can deteriorate into little more than a torturous assault course; littered with routine boredoms, frustrations and resentments. Couple all that with external pressures and sometimes marriage feels not worth the effort. But there are major benefits to being hitched or committed, other than just a beneficial tax regime.

Healthy marriage; healthy people.

Being happily married bestows heaps of health benefits. You might be forgiven for thinking that if you’re married you don’t live longer it just seems like it but, no, a good marriage really can help you clock up more years (1) and married people are happier (2) even though they don’t always look it from the outside.

But when marriage doesn’t work it can feel being manacled to a maniac, marooned with a misogynist or nailed to a nag. And I don’t care what the studies say, that’s not healthy. You may hear couples say stuff like: “We are making our marriage work!” but how do we do this?

Making it work.

We pay lip service to “working on the marriage” but what is the work we need to do? Marriage vows such as “to love and to cherish” and “forsaking all others, for better or for worse” don’t really tell us how to make it work, although they give us a clue.

Fortunately a ton of research has been done on what to do and not do to make your marriage, or any intimate relationship work. Follow the guidelines here to become “good at marriage."

Tip one: Be romantic but keep it real.

We are all (force?) fed romance in movies and novels. The handsome man gets the beautiful woman. But what I wonder is what happens after our romantic couple ride off into the sunset together? What do they do exactly? Bicker? Moan at one another? Start to ignore each other?

After all that romance, our beautiful couple is bound to have massive expectations of their life together. But when rose tinted expectations clash with day to reality, watch out!

Romance is vital in any relationship. Always seeing the best in your partner helps to keep things intimate and love should be expressed. But if you have been raised on Mills and Boon Romance novels or feel-good movies, then your own romantic expectations can work against the sustainability of your long term relationship.

When day to day life fails to live up to the giddy, heady lust-filled days of the pre-settled down romance people can become angry, even blame one another: “This wasn’t what I signed up for." They find it hard to take the rough with the smooth because they never really figured there would be any rough.

Expectations not diluted with at least a dash of realism can be a royal road to relationship ruin. Your partner may be an angel, but they have feet of clay. You must learn to love those feet or at least accept them a bit!

New Magic Mike Trailer: Now With Channing Tatum in a Thong

I thought the day the first trailer for Magic Mike premiered was the best day of my life - until now. An even better trailer just dropped for the flick, which stars Channing Tatum as the titular buff character. This preview starts out the same as the first one, with the old stripper cop routine at a bachelorette party, but then goes on to explore some different relationships. And there's way more dudes taking it all off (including Matt Bomer!).

This trailer actually makes me more jazzed about the movie than the first one. We already know there's going to be a romance between Mike and Paige (Cody Horn), but now we get a little bit of the mentor/protégé relationship he has with Alex Pettyfer's character. Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund Return Home to LA Together

Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund arrived at LAX together last night. The couple have been dating for a few months now, having met while making On the Road back in 2010. Their picture, directed by Walter Salles, will make its debut this month at the Cannes Film Festival. Hopefully, Kirsten and Garrett will take the opportunity to go public with their romance, but they won't be the only stars on the red carpet supporting their movie. Kristen Stewart also stars, as does Tom Sturridge, Sam Riley, and Amy Adams. Kirsten was just in NYC to attend Monday's Met Ball. For the annual fashion extravaganza, Kirsten Dunst wore a Rodarte suit-dress designed by her good pals Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

New Amazing Spider-Man Trailer: 3 Reasons to Watch

I know we've already seen a couple of trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man, but the latest one is still definitely worth watching. In the midst of footage we've seen before, like Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield)'s romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), there's also a lot of fresh stuff. More specifically, there's more action, more villainy, and a little more humor. Here are three reasons you should check it out:

More Spidey sass. We already knew that Garfield's Peter Parker loves a good wisecrack, and here his sarcasm is on display again, as he reveals a fear of small knives. I have to give credit to Marc Webb for remembering that even geeky teens can be obnoxious.
A better look at the Lizard. The flashes of Dr. Connors, aka The Lizard, are still brief, but this preview provides a better idea of what we're in for. Specifically, just how big (and kind of scary) this guy is.
More intrigue. I've always been curious about Peter's parents, since the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies don't really touch on the topic at all, and I'm looking forward to getting some answers in The Amazing Spider-Man. Not only does this new trailer tease that secrets will be revealed, but it suggests that Peter was destined to be Spidey all along.

What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

New Year's Eve

Garry Marshall's latest ensemble comedy features a whole bushel of A-listers. Everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Robert De Niro makes an appearance in the flick that features stories of people experiencing New Year's Eve in New York City. The movie also stars Glee's Lea Michele as an aspiring singer, Michelle Pfeiffer as a woman on a mission to cross items off her bucket list, Zac Efron as the bike messenger who helps her, Katherine Heigl as Jon Bon Jovi's super angry ex-girlfriend, and many others. Though the film isn't the best in the genre, it's fun to see all the stars assembled and matched-up together. Extras include director's commentary, a gag reel, and deleted scenes.

Haywire

Real-life mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano stars as Mallory Kane, a skilled black ops soldier on a mission for revenge after she is betrayed. Director Steven Soderbergh wrote the story around Carano after seeing her in a match, which means her butt-kicking skills are the focus of this action thriller. Also showcased? Antonio Banderas, amazing chase sequences, Channing Tatum, and lots and lots of hand-to-hand combat. Extras include a featuring looking at "the men of Haywire" and Gina Carano's training for the movie.

Abbie Cornish and James D'Arcy star in W.E., a historical romance directed and cowritten by Madonna. Cornish plays a modern woman obsessed with learning about the decades-old love affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the woman he gave up the throne to be with. The film won accolades for its style, even landing an Oscar nomination for achievement in costume design. DVD extras include a making-of piece featuring Madonna.

The Five-Year Engagement: Hold Off on the RSVP

I was looking forward to The Five-Year Engagement like a dear friend's wedding, but as promising as the movie is, it's not as funny or romantic as I was hoping. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt play Tom and Violet, a happy couple who gets engaged, but over the course of planning their wedding, they get sidetracked, and end up putting off the big day. As their wedding plans fall apart, so does their relationship. This is where The Five-Year Engagement differs most notably from other romantic comedies; instead of seeing a romance develop, we're watching one decline - and it's as depressing to watch as it sounds.

It's a shame that we don't get to see the prologue of Tom and Violet's relationship, because Segel and Blunt have fantastic chemistry, and they have each have such solid comedic timing. It's well suited for the humor of the script, which was penned by Segel and director Nicholas Stoller. The duo also wrote Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets, two of my favorite comedies from the last few years, so my expectations were fairly high. Unfortunately, The Five-Year Engagement doesn't live up to those movies. The film's biggest laughs happen in the beginning of the movie, when the roadblocks to their wedding are far lighter than what the couple faces down the road. It's on that road that The Five-Year Engagement loses me - and its laughs. To find out what else I thought, just keep reading.

Tribeca Takeaway: Hysteria

Hysteria, a movie from director Tanya Wexler, is currently screening at the Tribeca Film Festival before its theatrical release on May 18. The story, which is based on real-life events, centers on the 1880s-era doctor who invented the vibrator to treat hysterical female patients, and I had a chance to check out the film and bring you the details.

Who's behind it? The film was helmed by Wexler, who previously directed indie films Ball in the House and Finding North. Fun fact: Wexler, a graduate of Columbia's film school, is the half sister of Daryl Hannah. Hugh Dancy is the film's leading man, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rupert Everett, and Felicity Jones rounding out the cast.
What's it about? Dancy's Dr. Mortimer Granville is a cutting-edge doctor for his time, since he shocks colleagues by believing that germs exist. After being fired from one hospital after another for his radical views, he lands a last-ditch position as the assistant to society doctor Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce). Dalrymple is a specialist in "hysteria," which was a commonly diagnosed condition in women. His treatment involves a literal hands-on method, and Mortimer has to explore other options to ease the physical demands on the doctor. Mortimer also romances Dalrymple's daughter Emily (Felicity Jones) but is also captivated and confused by Robert's other daughter, volatile social activist Charlotte (Gyllenhaal).

Five Reasons Ian Somerhalder Is Perfect For Fifty Shades of Grey

Though it came as no surprise to me that Fifty Shades of Grey will be coming to the big screen, I'll admit that I was blanking on the perfect casting. That is, until Ian Somerhalder expressed interest in playing Christian Grey. The sensational erotic novel revolves around the S&M relationship between 27-year-old-billionaire Christian Grey and naive college student Anastasia Steele, and the romance that comes with her sexual education. Somerhalder seems so right for the role of Christian that now I can't picture anyone else in the part. Not only does he fit the bill physically, but there are so many similarities between Christian and Damon, Somerhalder's character The Vampire Diaries. Check out my top five reasons why Somerhalder would be the perfect Christian Grey, and tell me if you agree.

He's got a swoon-worthy smolder. Anastasia is constantly talking about how beautiful Christian is, from his crooked smile to his perfect bod. Somerhalder's got prettiness in spades, but he also knows how to play it mysterious. If you need more convincing, check out his sexiest smolders.
He's not afraid to show skin on the screen. Before Somerhalder hit it big on The Vampire Diaries, he was stripping down regularly for the HBO show Tell Me You Love Me. Though the series only lasted 10 episodes, it generated buzz for pushing the envelope with its racy sex scenes - an element you can bet we'll see in the big-screen version of Fifty Shades.
There's a vampire connection. Fifty Shades started out as Twilight fan fiction, in that Christian and Anastasia are loosely based on Bella and Edward's personalities in Stephenie Meyer's saga. Though Damon is a far cry from Edward, they're both hot vampires lusting after good girls.
Christian and Damon have a lot in common. Christian's basically the complex bad boy with a softer side, and the same can be said for Damon Salvatore. Somerhalder has mastered the art of playing hot and cold, and can also go from playful to mistrusting with a mere glance, which is exactly how quickly Christian's moods swing in the novel.
He's not too mainstream. Somerhalder has die-hard fans as far as the eye can see, but he's not quite a major movie star, which makes him a wise choice for the role. Going with a household name like Ryan Gosling could be distracting to the audience, but Somerhalder is still a bit under the radar.
