The description for this documentary caught my eye back in January when My Kid Could Paint That screened at Sundance. The film examines the school of thought that instead of being "genius," abstract art is really a sham, simple art that could easily be done by a child.
Four-year-old Marla started making paintings that were soon being compared to Picasso and other respected artists.

The Grammy Awards rolled out the red carpet this evening with a one-hour live show to celebrate their 2010 nominees. (Check out photos from the event here.) I'm thinking of taking a trip to New York in late November — not for Thanksgiving or to visit my relatives and friends, but for the Tim Burton exhibit that will open at the Museum of Modern Art on Nov. 22. The exhibit will feature "more than 700 pieces: paintings, drawings, storyboards, maquettes, puppets and other work created or designed by Burton."

To sparkle, or not to sparkle. That just may be the question when Catherine Hardwicke takes on some of William Shakespeare's most well-known material and makes it into a "modern-day supernatural thriller." The Twilight director is apparently teaming back up with Emile Hirsch (the two worked together on Lords of Dogtown) for this adaptation of Hamlet, which was initially Hirsch's idea.

Ever since I read Julie and Julia, the story of a New York woman working and blogging her way through Julia Child's Mastering The Art of French Cooking, I've been curious to see how the movie would translate to film. We got a brief glimpse after this year's Oscars, but today the first full trailer is out, and it looks charming.
It appears that writer/director Nora Ephron has beefed up the Julia Child portion of the story, showing her life in France and her own early cooking ventures to go along with Julie's modern kitchen foibles.

This week, Department of Eagles duo Daniel Rossen (of the band Grizzly Bear) and Fred Nicolaus debuted their new video for the song "No One Does It Like You" at New York's Museum of Modern Art as part of the museum's ongoing PopRally series of events. The video's creators were on hand to chat about this amazing video with a sold-out crowd.
The director, Patrick Daughters, is also the man behind Feist's "1,2,3,4" video, so it's not totally surprising to find some impressive choreography sprinkled throughout.

In case my recent posts on the Oscar-nominated short films have piqued your interest in seeing the little gems for yourself, there's good news: The films start making their way around the country today thanks to Magnolia Pictures. One program shows all five of the live-action short films, while the other combines the five animated shorts. I went to both shows last year and highly recommend them: It's great to see films like this that so rarely make it into theaters.
