A History of Leap Year Engagements

Happy Leap Day! If you watched that Amy Adams movie a couple of years ago, you know that according to tradition, on Feb. 29 a woman can propose to a man. But this practice dates back before romantic comedies. According to legend, in the 5th century, Ireland's St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for a proposal. St. Patrick apparently decided he could compromise and let women propose on Leap Day. After all, it only comes around every four years.

Another story attributes the practice to Queen Margaret of Scotland in 1288, who is said to have imposed fines for men who turned down a woman's proposal. Note that Queen Margaret would have been 5 and living in Norway at the time. The fine ranged from a kiss to a silk gown. In Denmark, the longstanding tradition states that a man must give a woman 12 gloves if he refuses marriage on Leap Day, and in Finland the fine is a fabric for a skirt.

Whether St. Patrick or Queen Margaret actually granted women permission to propose, it didn't become popular until the 19th century. Obviously this tradition seems quaint if not sexist, since a woman shouldn't be obligated to wait passively for a proposal, except on one day every four years. Still, I'm curious: regardless of the day, would you propose to your guy?

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Before the Summer blockbusters come storming in, there's still time to catch up on the big movies you missed in the theater. Today I've got one Oscar nominee, one rom-com, and one for the whole family.

In the latest musical-turned-movie from director Rob Marshall, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Guido Contini, a famous Italian filmmaker suffering a midlife crisis. As he struggles to find inspiration for his ninth film, he reflects on his relationships with the many ladies who have affected him over the years - which includes a wide array of talented ladies like Kate Hudson, Fergie, and Judi Dench. Though the film didn't live up to the hype for the critics or at the box office, I thought it was pretty, fun, and full of entertaining song-and-dance numbers. Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard turn in solid performances as Contini's mistress and neglected wife, and Cruz scored an Oscar nod for the role.

DVD extras include director commentary, featurettes, music videos, and a Screen Actors Guild Q&A.

Leap Year

In Leap Year, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands when her boyfriend drags his feet on asking for her hand in marriage. She heads to Ireland for Leap Day, the one day where women can propose to men instead of the other way around. She encounters a few bumps along the way, one in the form of a handsome stranger named Declan (Matthew Goode). There's nothing new here as far as romantic comedies go, but the irresistible chemistry between Adams and Goode makes this the perfect rental for a Saturday night in.

The Tooth Fairy

Round up your favorite little loved ones to see Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the title role in The Tooth Fairy. He plays Derek Thompson, a tough minor league hockey player who is sentenced to one week of tooth fairy duty when he crushes the hopes and dreams of a young fan. The movie didn't exactly wow the critics, but fans of Johnson might enjoy seeing the former wrestler don a tutu and magic wand.

Box Office: Avatar Is Still Raking It In

No surprise here: Avatar topped the box office for its fourth straight week in a row, a feat that hasn't happened since 2008's The Dark Knight. The film took in $48.5 million for the No. 1 spot, but also saw its biggest sales dip yet with a 29 percent decrease from last week's numbers.

Sherlock Holmes came in second yet again with $16.6 million, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $16.3 million.

The majority of you said you were interested in seeing the vampire flick Daybreakers, and it proved to be the most promising of the weekend's debuts with $15 million for fourth place. It's Complicated came in fifth with $11 million.

Other newcomers Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn't fare as well. The Amy Adams vehicle took in $9 million for a No. 6 spot, while the latter made $7 million for a disappointing No. 9 finish.
