Romantic comedies are the refreshing confections of the movie world - light, airy, and fun (and sometimes just a little bit cheesy). Whether you love them or loathe them, Hollywood cranked out more sweet stories of love with a touch of laughs this year, some a bit better than others. What 2010 romantic comedy is your favorite?

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Before the Summer blockbusters come storming in, there's still time to catch up on the big movies you missed in the theater. Today I've got one Oscar nominee, one rom-com, and one for the whole family.

In the latest musical-turned-movie from director Rob Marshall, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Guido Contini, a famous Italian filmmaker suffering a midlife crisis. As he struggles to find inspiration for his ninth film, he reflects on his relationships with the many ladies who have affected him over the years - which includes a wide array of talented ladies like Kate Hudson, Fergie, and Judi Dench. Though the film didn't live up to the hype for the critics or at the box office, I thought it was pretty, fun, and full of entertaining song-and-dance numbers. Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard turn in solid performances as Contini's mistress and neglected wife, and Cruz scored an Oscar nod for the role.

DVD extras include director commentary, featurettes, music videos, and a Screen Actors Guild Q&A.

Leap Year

In Leap Year, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands when her boyfriend drags his feet on asking for her hand in marriage. She heads to Ireland for Leap Day, the one day where women can propose to men instead of the other way around. She encounters a few bumps along the way, one in the form of a handsome stranger named Declan (Matthew Goode). There's nothing new here as far as romantic comedies go, but the irresistible chemistry between Adams and Goode makes this the perfect rental for a Saturday night in.

The Tooth Fairy Round up your favorite little loved ones to see Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the title role in The Tooth Fairy. He plays Derek Thompson, a tough minor league hockey player who is sentenced to one week of tooth fairy duty when he crushes the hopes and dreams of a young fan. The movie didn't exactly wow the critics, but fans of Johnson might enjoy seeing the former wrestler don a tutu and magic wand. DVD extras include a workout featurette and a karaoke sing-along. 15%

Get the Look: Leap Year

If you were able to catch Leap Year in theaters, you know it's all about the romance that happens between Amy Adams and Matthew Goode's characters along the way - to Dublin, where Adams's character plans to propose to her boyfriend. Box Office: Avatar Is Still Raking It In

No surprise here: Avatar topped the box office for its fourth straight week in a row, a feat that hasn't happened since 2008's The Dark Knight. The film took in $48.5 million for the No. 1 spot, but also saw its biggest sales dip yet with a 29 percent decrease from last week's numbers.

Sherlock Holmes came in second yet again with $16.6 million, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $16.3 million.

The majority of you said you were interested in seeing the vampire flick Daybreakers, and it proved to be the most promising of the weekend's debuts with $15 million for fourth place. It's Complicated came in fifth with $11 million.

Other newcomers Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn't fare as well. The Amy Adams vehicle took in $9 million for a No. 6 spot, while the latter made $7 million for a disappointing No. 9 finish.

Leap Year: A Romantic Romantic Comedy

I dreaded seeing Leap Year after I watched the trailer - the premise looked unimaginative and sexist. Anna (Amy Adams) is ready to get married, so she seizes on a tradition her father tells her about: in Ireland, women "can" propose to men on the day Leap Year falls on, Feb. 29. Her journey to Dublin to chase down her boyfriend ends up as a series of pratfalls with handsome, devil-may-care stranger Declan (a gorgeously unkempt Matthew Goode).

Let's just say I wasn't psyched about another rom-com fueled by the idea that all women need marriage to feel complete. And it was poor, Oscar-nominated Amy Adams being sacrificed, klutzing her way through desperation to win her man. But a funny thing happened at the theater: Leap Year surprised me. The premise becomes a mere platform for Anna and Declan's sweet, simmering courtship, and I found something that eludes most romantic comedies: romance.

I didn't immediately take to the movie though; it had to win me over. To see what I mean, just

read more. The first act has Anna braving rough plane and boat rides, flustered in a skirt and a pair of $600 high heels. It's a visual that some people in the theater laughed at, but I cringed. In this uniform, I pegged Anna as a variation on Sandra Bullock's uptight but severely feminine character in The Proposal (who's a variation on the female character in 75 percent of romantic comedies). Anna's sparring with Declan in the beginning is tired and familiar as well. Of course they hate each other! Isn't that how it always goes? There are plenty of generic moments at the beginning of the film, but as Anna and Declan journey across Ireland to her final destination, you get to know the two characters, who have surprisingly believable growth. Anna's not a desperate fool who only values herself if she's married; she wants to be settled to remedy the instability she had in childhood. And the movie doesn't treat Anna as if she's pathetic for wanting to propose to her boyfriend - it's treated as romantic, a unique proposal story. Of course, you can tell from the trailer and poster that the real love story is between Anna and Declan, who are brought to life through Adams and Goode. It's their chemistry and ability that makes Leap Year a charmer.
