Penelope and Johnny Make a Pre-Cannes Pirate Pit Stop in Russia!

Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp popped up at the Ritz Hotel in Moscow this morning at a photo call before the Russian premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The duo are traveling the globe to promote the latest installment of the franchise, and were in LA just last Saturday for a huge Disneyland screening. The California stop came after a few days in NYC for Penelope, so she could attend the Met Ball alongside designer Oscar de la Renta. She and Johnny are next bound next for Cannes, where they'll join a roster of other A-list stars on the red carpet. Johnny and Penelope will hit the film festival alongside others like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Alexander Skarsgard, Ryan Gosling, and more. There's lots of anticipation for all the celebrities, though it seems Angelina is the one fans are most excited to see posing for photos. Hopefully, Penelope was able to take a break on Sunday to celebrate her very first Mother's Day. You ranked Penelope as your favorite new mom of the year, and she likely spent the day alongside husband Javier and their little boy Leo before jetting off on the next leg of her huge press tour. Johnny, meanwhile, will be able to reunite with partner Vanessa Paradis soon. She's already in the south of France, having headed there earlier this week to see Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel Cruise collection with Rachel Bilson and Blake Lively.

Disneyland rolled out a black carpet for Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp at the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides world premiere last night. New mom Penelope was without her two favorite guys, husband Javier Bardem and baby Leo, but she did stop to hug Mickey Mouse before joining the rest of the cast on stage. Johnny too walked the press line solo before stopping to chat with his close friend, and Jack Sparrow inspiration, Keith Richards. Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush was in high spirits as was up-and-comer Sam Claflin. Sam's fairly fresh to the Hollywood scene, but the British actor just landed the role of Prince Charmot opposite Kristen Stewart in their upcoming take on the classic fairy tale, Snow White and the Huntsman. Many celebrities also turned out to catch the fourth installment of Jerry Bruckheimer's Pirates franchise. Best friends Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale posed together as did mother-daughter duo Teri Hatcher and Emerson Rose. Eva Longoria joined her Desperate Housewives cast mate Teri at the event after throwing Victoria Beckham a baby shower earlier in the day.

It's May, but that didn't get in the way of Penelope Cruz's rocking a velvet dress with snowflake details at last night's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premiere in Moscow. She and costar Johnny Depp have been in Russia since yesterday morning, when they were up early for a photo call with super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The trio are at the start of a massive world tour for the latest installment of the Disney franchise, and next up is a stop in London for a screening this evening before a big to-do at Cannes on Saturday. They'll then head to Munich, and finally, stop in Penelope's native Spain for an event next Wednesday. They kicked off promotion with a press event last weekend at Disneyland, and we also caught up with Penelope at a recent junket where she spoke about making Johnny laugh with her Jack Sparrow impression. Johnny and Penelope may both be able to reunite with their significant others once they arrive in the South of France. Even if we see them with Vanessa Paradis and Javier Bardem, respectively, it seems you're most excited to see Brad PItt and Angelina Jolie tackle the film festival's red carpets.

When we got to to see the first trailer for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, it felt like there was a little bit of the franchise's magic missing. Now we have trailer number two, and it's a bit more exciting than the first.

As expected, it has more of Johnny Depp's one-liners as Captain Jack Sparrow, along with some sexy sparring with costar Penelope Cruz. More importantly, we also get to see a bit more of the mermaid factor, and why they're such a big part of this sequel. One is needed to help the Captain Jack and his rival Blackbeard (Ian McShane) to get to The Fountain of Youth - the thin but interesting objective of the movie. They've been on the go since premiering Pirates at Disneyland last week and already traveled to Russia for another appearance. Johnny and Penelope will keep the promotions going when they land in Cannes on Saturday and join the star-studded film festival that kicked off on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if Johnny and Penelope will have their significant others by their side for the event, but they'll still be the center of attention even if they show up solo. Johnny's got eyes on him all over the world now since a new wax figure of the star was just unveiled in Germany.

Even Johnny Depp Didn't Understand the Most Recent Pirates Movies

Johnny Depp donned his full Jack Sparrow gear to cover this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly. He is, of course, promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ahead of the film's release later this month. Fans of the franchise were a bit disenchanted with the most recent Pirates films, and Depp admits that Dead Man's Chest and At World's End were convoluted and confusing - but he also explains why the newest sequel will be different (and much easier to digest):

On why Pirates 2 and 3 didn't do as well as the original: "It was plot-driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3 and saying, 'I don’t really know what this means.' He said, 'Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.' This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, 'What?'"
On having more say in the script this time around: "With this one, in terms of story, my involvement was a little more just because I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3. I felt it was very important to eliminate as many complications as possible."
On his mission for the fourth film: "Let’s give them something character-driven. Something fun and irreverent. Hoops of fire and whatnot. New blood, as it were."

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Trailer - More Like Familiar Tides

I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like something is missing from the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Don't get me wrong: I'm happy to see Johnny Depp back in his signature eyeliner to play Jack Sparrow (excuse me, that's Captain Jack Sparrow), but it doesn't look like there's a ton of magic in the fourth installment of the franchise. Jack embarks on yet another epic journey, this time without his sidekick Will (Orlando Bloom) and Will's sharp-tongued lady love (Keira Knightley). In their place, we have Sparrow's ex/possibly current love interest, Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), as Jack sets out to discover the fountain of youth.

Sure there are some familiar new faces (not to mention the introduction of some seductive mermaids), but even the preview's epic music isn't stirring new feelings of anticipation in my blood. Maybe I've still got a bad taste in my mouth from At World's End, but I was hoping for the latest installment to feel more fresh. Don't let that stop you from checking it out for yourself though. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Too Long at Sea

Even though Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has the shortest running time of all the installments in Disney's adventure series, its overstuffed treasure chest of filler makes it feel hours longer than it is. While the plot is solid and makes more sense than those of the earlier Pirates movies, there are too many distractions. Overly long battles, boring action sequences, and unnecessary scenes stretch what could have been a snappy amusement into a bloated, almost two-and-a-half-hour movie.

Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow, this time with a new nemesis: his scorned ex-lover Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Though she's furious that Jack left her years ago after seducing her, she's not the villain of the movie - her boss, the evil Blackbeard (Ian McShane), is. Angelica serves as the first mate on his ship, which she drags Jack onto so he can help direct them to the elusive Fountain of Youth. The mythical place can save Blackbeard from his predicted fate: death at the hands of Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), who's on their tail, eager to fulfill Blackbeard's destiny.

Johnny Depp gave Oprah Winfrey's lucky audience a sneak preview of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for an episode of the show that aired today. The hot actor also shared a champagne toast with Oprah and showed off a new, shorter haircut during his visit to The Windy City, which took place late last month. Johnny is gearing up for the movie's May 20 release, beginning with Saturday's world premiere at Disneyland. He'll also head to Cannes later this month for the movie's overseas debut. The fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise marks some new beginnings for Captain Jack. It's the first to be filmed in 3D, and also features a new love interest for the swashbuckling hero in Penelope Cruz.
