What are the Steamiest Scenes in TV History?

When you think of sexy TV scenes, what comes to mind? Meredith accidentally losing her panties after sleeping with Derek on Grey's Anatomy? David Caruso's Detective Kelly baring his butt with Amy Brenneman on the premiere of NYPD Blue? Melrose Place's Amanda having her way with Grant on her office desk?

Those scenes have made Buffy the Vampire Slayer scene where Buffy and Spike beat each other up as foreplay as the steamiest scene of all time.

That one doesn't really surprise me, nor does the No. 2 pick: Kate and Sawyer's cage-sex from Lost in 2006. But there are a couple that seemed out of place - like the scene from the first episode of Saving Grace last Summer where we meet Holly Hunter's character buck naked and mid-tryst. Sure, it was hot, but it's not like we knew the characters yet - and I think TV sex scenes seem steamier the longer you've been waiting for them.

Then again, I might consider putting the initial Nate Fisher/Brenda Chenoweth sex-in-the-closet scene from Six Feet Under on my list, as well as the car wash interaction Ally has with a stranger in the Season Three premiere of Ally McBeal. Vincent Kartheiser Talks Pete Campbell and Says, "There's No Shotgunning of Any Beers on the Mad Men Set"

Pete Campbell is one of Mad Men's most divisive characters, as he's schemed and smarmed his way through four seasons at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Ahead of the series' return this Sunday, we got a chance to chat with Vincent Kartheiser, the man behind Pete Campbell's suit and smirk. Check out what he had to say about Pete's evolution, his favorite costars to work with, and why being drunk on the set is a bad idea.

Do you have any rituals you do to warm up before filming?
Vincent Kartheiser: I used to jump around, scream and curse, and do all kinds of vocal exercises, but I don't really do that anymore. About halfway through last season, I found that none of that helped. I still do it once in a while, just out of habit. I've kind of killed most of my rituals.

Are you interested in a picking up a new ritual? Like shotgunning a beer?
VK: [Laughs] Yeah, no. There's no shotgunning of any beers on the Mad Men set. Contrary to popular belief, acting drunk while being drunk actually doesn't work that well.

Where do you hope Pete ends up at the end of the series?
VK: In the first season, I had all sorts of hopes, and I would sit and project, "Maybe it will be this," or, "Maybe they will send my character here," and a couple of times, I would talk to my friends about it. But I found that all the places that Matthew [Weiner] had brought Pete Campbell were completely unexpected by me. And were actually way more interesting and way more fun to play than any of those things that I had been thinking of. So I stopped having any expectations for my characters.

After such a long hiatus, is there fear among the cast that audiences have gotten over the Mad Men craze?
VK: I don't have fear about that because I know that we have a specific product that is not easily replaced, because it's not a genre; it's not a niche; it's a real story. It's not like we're doing a cop show, and there's a new cop show that everyone's into. It's not like we're even doing an advertising show. We're part of a show that is a specific story, and people have become interested in and intrigued with these characters, not necessarily with the genre or not necessarily with some type of gimmick. It's a story that I think people want to know the end of, and I think we have a group of fans that also aren't your usual television watchers. So it's a group of people that haven't refilled their DVR schedule with whatever is hottest this year, but rather it's people who have sought out our show in particular. We do believe that they will come back, and I also think that they will be rewarded for that, because when Matthew Weiner is given even a few more weeks to write something, it just gets better. And in this case he's been given a few more months. It's a great season. The scripts this year are intense and suspenseful and funny, and it's been a real joy to read and to perform this season, and I just know that the audience is going to be more excited than ever.

What do you think about the path that your character has taken over the course of the last four seasons? Has fatherhood changed him?
VK: Well, I think fatherhood has changed him, in the sense that it has brought this level of expectation and pressure to his household for him to be even more ambitious than he was before. Which must be quite an accomplishment for someone like Pete, who has been willing to blackmail his way into success. I love where the character's gone. It's such an interesting time, 26- to 30-years-old, and I think that time in a man's life, you either succeed or find out that you never will really be the man that you wanted to be. Late 20s, early 30s is when you kind of have to stick your flag in the ground. There was a while there when it was up in the air whether Pete was going to get the opportunity to do that or not. He didn't really feel like he fit the job of account manager very well. He thought, incorrectly, that he should be in Don Draper's shoes, making creative choices. Somewhere in season three, he kind of slid nicely into his character, and I think that has to do with his profession, and I think that has a lot to do with his wife, who has kind of made him buckle down and made him see what he has to do and believed in him and supported him. And I think the same comes with this child. It's forced him to kind of man up and say, "OK, this is the path that I'm on. I'm doing OK here. Instead of trying to be all these other things, I'm gonna be the best damn account man I can be." So in those ways, he's found a way to make a name for himself at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, and he's become a partner, and he has a lot of responsibility at that firm. So it's been a great evolution. And it's been interesting because myself, Vincent Kartheiser, as an actor, I was also trying to find a role that would help me stick my own flag in the ground, and Pete Campbell has done that for me. So there's a bit of synchronicity between the two.

How are you and Pete similar and how are you different?
VK: I'm similar to Pete because we both can be immature and petulant, and we can act out of fear. But I'm also similar to him because I think me and him are both generally sure that we are doing the correct thing. Even though Pete sometimes is not doing the right thing, he thinks it is the right thing, and he thinks it is, sometimes, the only option. And I think I can have similar feelings. When it comes to being different, we have very different backgrounds and very different relationships with our family and very different outlooks on the priorities in our life. Pete is much more ambitious than I am and much more cutthroat than I am. I think he can be way more competitive than me as well.

What have been some of your favorite moments to shoot in the last few seasons?
VK: I love all the scenes I have with Elisabeth Moss. She's such a fantastic actress, and I just love all the stuff we've had together. I love all the stuff that John Slattery has directed me in. He's got such a great tone when speaking with me as an actor, and he's a real director at heart, and I think every actor should work with him as a director once in their life. He's phenomenal.

Energy Saving Tips From a Rocket Scientist (Really)

The Scene: A 1500-square-foot, mid-century modern house in Phoenix, AZ, home to Bob and Helen Winkel.

The Inspiration: After unclogging lint from their dryer tube and realizing they were saving $15 a month on their energy bill, they decided to tackle energy-saving around the house.

The Challenge: Cut energy bills in half. Yes, half.

The Story: Despite rising energy prices, Bob and Helen cut their energy bills by 50% last year, saving an amazing $1,300 a year. They used this money to fund a trip to Paris (next year: a riverboat cruise in the Ukraine).

The Mad Scientist: Bob Winkel has been an engineer for over 40 years, and is a Chief Fellow at Honeywell. “It wasn’t rocket science,” says Bob, an engineer who has patents for space shuttle and satellite components – OK, so maybe it is?

Over the course of two years, Bob hooked up smart meters to read energy usage on almost every device throughout the house, graphed data, crunched the numbers, and kept a big binder with all his energy use findings.

The upshot? We get his best tips, sans the meter-reading and number-crunching.

Helen did veto one of Bob’s energy-saving tweaks, though: turning down the hot water heater. “There’s one thing that I need,” she says, “and it’s a hot bath.”

Shirtless Damon and More Season 3 Teases From The Vampire Diaries Comic-Con Panel

The cast of The Vampire Diaries were greeted with cheers (and a few love confessions for Ian Somerhalder) at Comic-Con this week. Somerhalder was joined by Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Candice Accola, Joseph Morgan (who plays Klaus), and creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec to answer questions, tease season three, and discuss one of the hottest love triangles on television. Somerhalder stole the show with one-liners about getting Fabio to guest star and how Caroline and Tyler should make werewolf/vampire "puppies", but all of the cast members had their own moments to shine. Here are highlights:

The panel was pretty tight-lipped on what we can expect from season three; the only footage we were treated two was a very quick clip of Damon sneaking up on Elena . . . but it was worth it because he all he was wearing was his birthday suit and signature grin.
Of course, the question on everyone's mind was whether or not Damon and Elena will finally get together in season three. Though the two characters shared a kiss in the season finale, don't expect them to be going to steady right away. The panel made it clear that Elena won't be running straight into Damon's arms because there are two many things in the way. However, they did mention that it's "going to take a lot of twists and turns," which sounds to me like Delena fans may get their due in time.
When asked about all of the character deaths, Wesley remarked that "every character on the show has died one time or another," while Somerhalder added, "Jeremy has died about four times." Meanwhile, Plec admitted that she gets a lot of hate mail for killing off Mason Lockwood, which prompted Wesley to say, "I sent you hate mail. He was hot."

One thing we did learn about next season is that Elijah will be back, and needless to say, he won't be very happy about how things have turned out for him.
Wesley is excited to explore more of Stefan's bad boy "ripper" side. He said, "As an actor we want to try different things. Stefan is noble and heroic but I think he needs to be multidimensional."
Dobrev fielded a lot of questions about her dual role, but she made it clear that she doesn't play favorites between Katherine and Elena, saying "I get the best of both worlds. I get to be the bad girl, and I get to be the good girl and I get to do flashbacks and bite people. They're both so much fun, so it's awesome. I can't really pick one or another. They will kill me one day because it's a lot of hard work for sure, but it's really cool."
Dobrev also said that she's a little bit of both Katherine and Elena: "I can get away with a lot more when I'm Katherine on set, but I actually learned and discovered a lot about myself playing these two characters. I feel like I grew up with these characters. I'm learning a lot from them and I'm learning from their mistakes . . . I started off more like Elena but as I'm growing up I've become more like Katherine. It's given me a little more confidence, I'm more comfortable. And I can walk in heels really well!"
Dobrev also chooses to pick Team Damon or Team Stefan, mostly out of fear of alienating her fans. When asked to choose, she replied, "The problem is half of this room will get so mad at me if I say one and the other half will be so mad if I say the other . . . the beauty of the situation is that I don't have to choose. Do you see what I mean? Katherine had it right." Paul Wesley added, "Sharing is caring."
One of the most fun parts of the panel was when the cast was asked which character they'd like to play besides their own:
Morgan: "I'd like to play Damon because of all the attention he's getting. That looks like a lot of fun."
Somerhalder: "It most certainly can be."

Dobrev: "I'd want to be Klaus. The biggest, baddest vampire of all time, before he came along, that's what Katherine was."
Morgan: "Hybrid. The biggest baddest hybrid."

Somerhalder: "Klaus, because Damon always thought he was the biggest badass around and then this idiot shows up and wreaks havoc."
Wesley: "I just want to be Klaus with a really bad accent."

Accola: "I like being Caroline!"
Somerhalder: "I change my answer to Caroline."
Somerhalder played it coy when asked what he'd change about Damon if he could (he was sitting between the show's creators, after all), but did share this: "I wouldn't change a damn thing about Damon Salvatore. They've created these super dynamic, very complex individuals. If you go into your own experiences, past, present, and future, all of a sudden you have real stuff and real scenes that actually mean something to you, and you're going through this ride with this character. It's really a profound thing."
