The holidays are here, bringing not only lots of gifts, cookies, and good cheer, but also a ton of engagements! While hearing that one of your besties is sporting a new rock is always exciting, being a bridesmaid and being pregnant or a new mom can be really challenging - just ask Kourtney Kardashian, who rocked a skin-tight lilac bridesmaid dress in Khloe's wedding when she was seven months pregnant! Here are a few tips for surviving with your friendship and sanity intact.

Be realistic. Many a bridesmaid has agreed to stand up in a friend's wedding only to regret it when she's tottering around in the required three-inch heels and unflattering silk dupioni dress when she's super pregnant or still hanging on to 15 pounds of baby weight. While you don't want to disappoint your friend, really think about whether you'll be able to live up to her expectations if you are nearing your due date or will be dealing with a newborn. It's better to bow out gracefully than to feel miserable or torn in two directions (i.e. hair and makeup or a breastfeeding session) on her big day.
Speak up about the dress early. Ask your friend if you can try on bridesmaid dresses with her; otherwise, you can't complain when she picks out a bright orange pencil dress for you to wear six weeks postpartum. Women who haven't gone through a pregnancy often don't realize how uncomfortable pregnant women and new moms can be within their own bodies. My daughter is almost 9 months old, and I'm in a breastfeeding sweet spot. She's always been a champion nurser, and now that we're only doing it a couple of times a day, all the stress and mess is gone, leaving only some amazing bonding time. I swear, since she started crawling a couple of months ago, it's the only time she's happy sitting still, which means we can both get a little break. While this nursing stage has me wondering how long it will be until I want to wean her - I originally thought I'd only nurse for around six months - there is one small problem: my husband.

Nursing has made me feel like my breasts are a baby-only zone, and my husband isn't too happy about it. He totally supports my breastfeeding, but he'd like to get in on some of the boob action, too (minus the milk, of course). Am I alone in this feeling? Weigh in below and let us know!

Ah, the wish list.

It made a lovely debut when we were little, often addressed to a certain Mr. Claus. It had a good run for a few years, but retired itself in adulthood as the stuff of kids and dreams (with the exception of weddings and babies, when they take on the adult guise of “registry”).

And now that we are adults, wish lists (outside of those socially acceptable registries) are at best silly and at worst mercenary, right? That’s what many think.

Are We Becoming More Mercenary?

A recent New York Times story discussed the recent trend of the wish list-it’s back, along with more mercenary attitudes towards gift-giving, like a desire for gift cards instead of actual gifts. (According to the story, for the last five years, gift cards have been the most requested gift, according to National Retail Foundation surveys.) A study released earlier this year showed that people who receive gifts they had requested actually derive more pleasure from them and appreciate them more.

We've got mamas on the mind this holiday season! When mom's done doing the holiday shopping for everyone on her list, we're sure there are still a few items on there that she wants for herself.

Jessica Shyba is the woman behind Momma's Gone City, a blog chronicling her daily life with two tots since moving from the Bay Area to New York City so her husband could attend dental school. Since becoming a city mama, she's learned - and written about - the ins and outs of public transportation, the beauty of living in small spaces, and the unexpected adventures of day-to-day life. She welcomed her third child last night (almost in the taxi on the way to the hospital) but shared a few things she's hoping to unwrap later this month.

An iPad 2 ($500): It's about time that our family has one of these brilliant devices. My kids will love it and benefit from it, and I would like something that I can slip into the diaper bag easily so that I can work on the go.
Keurig ($134): I am the only one in the house that drinks coffee and hot beverages, so the large coffeemaker is wasteful and time-consuming, especially when you wash it every single day! With this new baby, I know that a yummy, hot apple cider will be a nice treat for me during his overnight feedings.
Epiphanie "Lyric" Camera Bag. ($155): Just this week I purchased a new SLR camera and two new lenses - something I've been wanting and saving up for, for a while now. I just need a gorgeous new bag to carry it in as well. I rarely leave home without a camera, and this particular one will be able to accommodate a few diapers and wipes as well.
A session or three at The Braid Bar at the John Barrett Salon in Bergdorf's: This is the prettiest, low-maintenance hair style I have found, and this salon does an amazing job at braiding hair! I would love to treat myself to an appointment, especially when I know that showers will be few and far between in the very near future!

Breaking Dawn Part 1: Horrifying on Multiple Levels

Let's be honest: the standards for Breaking Dawn Part 1 are not high. All we want as fans is a satisfying conclusion to an addictive guilty pleasure, and considering the titillating content of the fourth book (Wedding! Sex! Hybrid vampire baby!), the film version has to do very little to please its audience. Sadly, it feels like Part 1 is grossly imbalanced; certain aspects are lazy while other scenes are over the top. Though Breaking Dawn has the most theatrical elements of all the movies, the film is disappointing - and often, just plain bad.

The movie begins with Edward and Bella's wedding, and then we follow them on a honeymoon full of passion - and problems. The couple manages to have sex for the first time, but Edward's vampiric strength leaves bruises all over Bella's body. After they overcome that hurdle, Bella faces another one when she makes the classic mistake of eschewing birth control because she's assumed her vampire mate is shooting blanks. He's not, though, and Bella's suddenly pregnant, but no one is quite sure what's growing inside her. Science and legend have no explanation, but everyone can see that Bella is getting weaker by the second. Unless Edward can turn her into a vampire during childbirth, she may be gone forever. It's a pretty wild premise that was shocking to read, and even crazier to see - and not in a good way. To read about my issues with the film, just keep reading.

If you happen to be doing some holiday shopping in New York City or San Francisco, take a look at the store windows you pass - some may be filled with a high-tech way for mama to do some charitable giving without ever opening her wallet. Ebay just unveiled Give-a-Toy Store interactive storefronts that allow shoppers to use their smartphones to scan QR-coded price tags to make an immediate donation to Toys For Tots.

Debra Messing, mom of 7-year-old Roman, and the upcoming star of Smash was on hand to kick off the new endeavor and spoke with me about her favorite holiday traditions.

LilSugar: With the holiday season upon us, how did you come to work with eBay on this project?
Debra Messing: The holiday season is a time when people are more inclined to give, and I just thought that eBay's initiative was so brilliant. They have this window with virtual gift tags with toys, and there are different donation amounts - there's $5, $10, $20 - you just scan your [smartphone] over the window, you're on the sidewalk, and instantly you're donating to Toys For Tots and 100 percent of the money goes to Toys For Tots. Being able to make things really quick and easy and meaningful is important.

LS: What family holiday traditions are you most looking forward to this year?
DM: We just moved back to New York, but have always had family here. We love to go skating at Wolman rink, and go see plays - musicals specifically. Waiting for the snow to come. Looking forward to putting on the snowsuit and stomping through Central Park.

LS: So much of the holiday focus is on kids. What's on your wish list this year?
DM: For me, there is no better present than a massage. Flowers are beautiful, but they die. Champagne is fun, but it's gone - very quickly. As a mom we're on 24/7, and if we're working moms, which most of us are, we're exhausted, and sleep deprived, and we don't take care of ourselves. We feel guilty if we take too much time for ourselves. It feels like an extravagance, but it really is a necessity for moms to take an hour to shut down, rejuvenate, and have someone to rub out the kinks from carrying the baby on your hip too much or whatever you're doing. My son's now at a place where he likes to jump on my body to wake me up at 6 in the morning, so I've literally got bruises all over my body.

She posed for pictures solo on the red carpet in an orange gown and Tabitha Simmons heels while her Amazing Spider-Man costar and beau decided to go straight inside the event. They partied alongside a long list of Big Apple-based funny people, including SNL's Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig. Emma has gotten familiar with the show's cast this week, since she's hosting tomorrow's episode! Tina Fey left baby Penelope at home for an adults-only evening out at the annual bash with her husband, Jeff Richmond, while Jimmy Fallon made the rounds with wife, Nancy Juvonen.

Emma was solo out on the town Monday for the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, which came just days after her big 24th birthday. Emma and Andrew have gone to great lengths to keep their relationship under wraps over the past few months. They're rarely photographed together, but have been seen on a few cute date nights and wearing coordinating Teen Wolf Halloween costumes in recent weeks.
