The Fox Fall Schedule: My Take (With Video!)

Fox just revealed its Fall and mid-season schedules, including the addition of big new sci-fi dramas, the return of 24 (complete with that two-our prequel airing in November) and a new comedy. Now that I've had a chance to think about the schedule and watch some clips, here are my thoughts:

In the Fall, Tuesday night will be pretty darn cool with the return of House followed by the new J.J. Abrams thriller Fringe. I'm excited about this new Abrams series - based on the clips I've seen it looks like The X-Files meets Lost with a tiny bit of Alias sprinkled in. Plus a lot of needles. The mood is dark and tense but the oh-so-adorable Joshua Jackson is back to his wise-cracking ways.
Joss Whedon's Dollhouse will not arrive until mid-season and will be paired up with 24. Between that and their big Tuesday night, Fox is going to be dishing out a ton of sci-fi dramas. I'm OK with this since the sci-fi genre lends itself to great characters and gives us a bit of everything: romance, intrigue, mystery, action, even comedy. I think it's a smart type of show to stock up on, especially from the folks who do it best (Abrams, Whedon).
One interesting thing to note for Dollhouse and Fringe is that they are both what Fox is calling "remote free TV." They promise to have significantly fewer commercials through the entire run of their seasons. Also, both dramas are introducing what they described as "ingénues" in Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) and Anna Torv (Fringe). Who knows? Maybe these ladies will become the next Jennifer Garner or Gillian Anderson.
I really love Niecy Nash and think the premise of the new comedy Do Not Disturb is cute (as is Jerry O'Connell). I'm not totally sold on whether or not it's built to last, but I'll cross my fingers. I did see some clips of Mitchell Hurwitz's first animated comedy, Sit Down, Shut Up, and wiped away some tears from laughing. The cast of voices is great, though we've got a while before that one's on the air.

"So You Think You Can Dance": The Elite Eight

Whether it's standard practice or a reaction to last week's oddly controversial routine, there were no solos on this week's "So You Think You Can Dance." Instead, each couple danced twice, performing wildly different styles and leaving me thoroughly discombobulated as to which dancers should stay and which should go.

The only two who I'm virtually sure will be safe are Pasha and Sabra, who easily get the "Couple of the Night" award from me. Their Broadway routine was incredibly fun, and they also managed a high-energy quickstep to close out the evening. I finally figured out what's so amazing about Sabra: She's such an emotional chameleon, thoroughly changing her expression depending on the character of the music.

Neil and Lacey got the gift of the competition in the form of an emotional contemporary routine from Mia Michaels, the story of which imagined Mia and her deceased father meeting to dance again in heaven. Clearly, none of the judges were going to say anything negative about the piece after Mia explained its roots, and it's not like they needed to, really. It was well-performed, and Lacey finally managed to show some genuine, non-stagey emotions. But I reacted more strongly to the story than the dancing, and - unless it looked wildly different in person than it did on TV -I'm not sure I'd call it one of the best dance performances ever on television.

But Neil and Lacey's other routine was less fantastic - a Latin jazz number in which Lacey did her Lacey thing without ever looking at Neil, who was delivering plenty of awkward moves of his own - and the other two couples were hit-or-miss as well. Lauren and Dominic weren't bad, exactly, but their krumping wasn't quite hard enough and their rhumba was more posing (albeit sexy posing) than dancing. And my biggest problem with Sara and Danny was that they didn't seem to match well with each other; she was sharp in hip-hop while he was smooth, and their tango was sexy in the moment but ultimately forgettable.

Based solely on tonight's performances, I think Lauren and Sara are the girls most in danger, while Danny and Dominic are the guys I think are most likely to end up in the bottom. I'd have no problem sending Lauren home, but the choice on the guys' side is so much harder; Dominic might be out this time, but I'd hate to see either of those guys go, especially because I think they're more interesting individually than either Neil or Pasha. What's your take?

Pilot Watch: "New Amsterdam"

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. A lot can change before a show makes it to air, so these aren't comprehensive reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: Fox's "New Amsterdam."

What's it about? Short answer: John Amsterdam is a New York police detective who also happens to be immortal - or, at least, he will be immortal until he meets his one true love. If you want the long answer (and it certainly is long) here's the full description.

Who's in it? Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Stephen Henderson, Zuleikha Robinson

The good and the bad: I had to combine the categories here because, well, here's the thing: While I thought "New Amsterdam" wasn't a very good drama, it was pretty hysterical as a comedy. It's the kind of show that's meant to have a drinking game written for it, with instructions to drink every time Amsterdam mentions a suspiciously large unit of time (he's been sober for 15,000 days), every time he runs into an aging old girlfriend, or every time his image blurs with that of the Native American woman who put the immortality spell on him back in 1642. (Note that I don't necessarily recommend actually playing said drinking game, because you'd be plastered by the end of the pilot. Be safe out there.) Granted, the Lasse Hallstrom-directed pilot is pretty to look at, as is Waldau himself. But everything beyond that is ridiculous. How has nobody ever recognized him? What must his resume look like? How often must he change his name to stay under the radar - and why, oh why, would he pick Amsterdam?

Will I watch? I can't lie: I was pretty entertained, albeit probably not for the reasons Fox was hoping.

"So You Think You Can Dance": The Final 10

After hearing about Buzz's fun with the "So You Think You Can Dance" cast down at the TCAs, I couldn't wait for last night's show. Boy was I not let down - it was double the high kicks with all 10 of the final dancers showing off two different routines. They mixed up partners for genre performances and each did a solo of the same routine. Let me tell you, it was exhausting...and awesome.

As for the duet dances, it was a little unnerving to see them with all new partners. Pasha and Lauren performed Hip Hop and while the judges were impressed with Pasha's first foray into the genre, I thought he looked a little awkward. Kameron and Sabre's contemporary routine was fairly tame and I agree with Mia who said that it completely exposed Kameron's lack of technique (only I wouldn't use those fancy words). He just couldn't hang. Lacey and Danny did the Tango, which was a bit emotionless. I think these two are the most technically skilled dancers in the competition, but are still lacking the ability to connect.

And then...Jamie and Dominic performed the Viennese Waltz in what basically amounted to Beauty and the Beast costumes. I thought it was bad, but the judges ripped it - and Dominic - apart, calling it hammy, cartoonish, and technically atrocious. Thankfully Sara and Neil saved the night with their fabulously cheesy and fun Disco routine. Loved it.

For the solos each dancer did the same Wade Robson routine to John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change." The dance was cheesetastic, and I agreed with Mia who said she was disappointed that everyone stuck to the same moves and didn't make the dance in their own voice. As for standouts: Danny can jump. Period. Sabre, Lauren and Lacey all made me realize I like the girls a lot more than the guys in this competition. The judges were impressed that Kameron took the criticism from his contemporary routine and pulled out a good performance.

As for who is going tonight: I would send home Jamie and Pasha, though I'm worried about Dominic after the judges tore into him for that Waltz. That being said, it's all up to the people now, so it's anyone's game. What did you think? Were the judges too harsh on Dominic and Jamie? Is Danny's inability to open up getting anyone else a little emotional (it's because of his difficult childhood, tear)? Who is going home tonight?

"So You Think You Can Dance": The Top 20 Compete

This week's Top 20 competition show was a perfect example of why I love "So You Think You Can Dance." Though some of the competition's 10 couples were stronger than others, all of them were downright entertaining. The choreography was diverse, the dance styles were wildly different, and I loved getting to see most of the contestants' personalities for the first time.

While everyone was good, there were a few clear standouts - and I'd put Sara and Jesus (above) at the top of my list. Their pop-jazz vagabond routine was hilarious and high-energy, and I never would have known that Sara was dancing outside of her B-girl comfort zone. Lacey and Kameron attacked some scary Mia Michaels choreography that gave me chills, and I couldn't stop smiling at Jimmy and Shauna's Broadway routine. Personality-wise, though, I have to root for Lauren and Neil, who didn't have the greatest on-stage chemistry but hammed it up in their interview.

On the less-awesome side, I'd guess Rickey and Ashlee should be worried about tonight's results. I thought the couples were paired to avoid the awkwardness of a really tall girl with a shorter guy, but apparently not; these two looked fairly ridiculous dancing together, and their tango completely lacked heat. Faina also seemed to struggle with her hip-hop routine, and I wasn't crazy about Dominic and Sabra's disco.

Pilot Watch: "K-Ville"

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't comprehensive reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: Fox's "K-Ville."

What's it about? This story about police officers in post-Katrina New Orleans centers on Marlin Boulet, a cop whose partner deserted him during the storm, and his new partner, Trevor Cobb, who has come to New Orleans from the Army to get a fresh start.

Who's in it? Anthony Anderson of "The Shield," Cole Hauser, Maximiliano Hernndez, Blake Shields, Tawny Cypress, John Carroll Lynch

The good: Anthony Anderson makes Marlin an appealing main character, a cop with questionable morals and traumatic memories of the hurricane who always seems just on the edge of a nervous breakdown. The New Orleans details are tastefully done and revealing, and it's impressive to see a show tackle a contemporary problem whose ultimate outcome is still unknown.

The bad: So many mysteries were solved and secrets revealed in the pilot that it felt like a movie, not a show; I couldn't imagine what other stories the series could explore. The officers who weren't Marlin or Trevor seemed like afterthoughts.

Will I watch? I'll give it an episode or two, at least.
