TV Tonight: Remember the Titans

When we were talking about football films the other day, several of you mentioned Remember the Titans as a favorite. Well, you're in luck: TNT is showing it tonight as a prelude to Sunday's Super Bowl. The Denzel Washington film is based on the true story of a black coach who takes over a newly integrated football team and promotes racial harmony while also leading the team to victory. Movie Night: Football Films

The Super Bowl is this Sunday, so let's get the couch warmed up with a Movie Night. This week's theme: football movies. These three will make for good date-night viewing, since they have a little bit of something for everyone (assuming one of you is a football fan). I could make some lame sports/love pun here - something involving touchdowns, perhaps - but "My Boys" has put me off those forever. So just grab some beer and buffalo wings and enjoy the films.

Any Given Sunday
Though it leans a little heavy on the football-as-war metaphors, Oliver Stone's over-the-top football flick is better than you might think, with chaotic cinematography, a killer hip-hop soundtrack, and a sinister normalcy holding it all together. Here, we get the first hints that Jamie Foxx can act, as he plays the young hotshot to Dennis Quaid's aging quarterback on the fictional Miami Sharks pro squad. There are plenty of quiet acting gems in the big ensemble cast, including Matthew Modine as the conflicted team doctor. Offering surprising moments of depth for what, at times, feels like a music video, Any Given Sunday will rally football fans and non-fans alike.

Jerry Maguire
Even if you haven't seen this movie, you can probably quote it, since Jerry Maguire birthed two well-known one-liners: "Show me the money!" and "You. Complete. Me." Egomaniac Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent who is all about the money but magically grows a conscience when he loses his job and falls for the sweet single mom Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger). Cuba Gooding Jr. is in top form as Jerry's loyal client Rod Tidwell, who sticks by Jerry even when his career is in turmoil.

Friday Night Lights
These athletes are far from the Super Bowl, but their fans are just as rabid. Before it was an outstanding TV show, Friday Night Lights was an outstanding nonfiction book following the Permian Panthers high-school football team in Odessa, TX. This nicely done film adaptation ably captures the players' personal and sports-related struggles as they carry the optimism of a hopeless town on their shoulders. A subdued and wise Billy Bob Thornton stars as coach, but the movie is most notable for its ability to make us care deeply about each of the players despite not really knowing any of them - kind of like a real football team.

Gael Garcia Bernal Brings No to Cannes and Talks "Quality Time" With the Kids

Gael Garcia Bernal is one of the celebrities at Cannes this year, and he's been busy talking up and celebrating his new film No. The picture is set in 1988, the year the Chilean people ousted dictator General Pinochet through a democratic vote. Gael plays René Saavedra, an ad man who accepts the potentially dangerous job of spearheading the TV campaign for the people against Pinochet, those who will vote "no" in the election.

Reviews of Gael's No have been quite good, and both he and director Pablo Larraín confessed to being really excited about the response. Pablo told us he cast the "wonderful" Gael as the leading man in the film because Gael has the mysteriousness to play René, a job that had to carry the whole production. Gael spoke about the challenges of creating a movie based on real events, his plans for a break, and how his career decisions are affected by his two kids, 1-year-old daughter Libertad and 3-year-old son Lázaro. Gael said:

On the challenges of making a movie based on a true story: "Any film is an interpretation of what happened, whether or not you're doing a true story. And in this film, we're doing a bio-film but a complete free interpretation where my character didn't exist. He's an amalgam of two characters, Garcia and Salcedo, who actually were the main publicists in the 'No' campaign."
On going full '80s in the film: "It's funny because now we laugh a lot. Always in retrospective, things that we took so seriously look so funny. The fashion, the microwave oven fascination - I remember when the microwave oven came out. I remember my mother talking about it . . . and it was like, 'What is that?' Nobody understood it. Invisible heat?!"
On how his life is way different now from the '80s: "We were fascinated by the TV as well. Because TV was such a big part of our lives back then. Now it's not so. For me it's not a big part at all, not for the last fifteen years. Only for football games and maybe the news. I don't watch TV at all. Before it used to be everybody. It was the only way you'd get the news, apart from newspapers."
On family time: "Last year I only did No, this film. I do produce stuff in my company in Mexico, and help out with a documentary film festival that we have. And that takes a lot of time. But I fortunately have the time to take it easy and spend the quality time that one should spend with their kids."
On if being a parent affects his career choices: "For the first time, yeah. There is one project that is there, maybe, and I think about it because I know that my kids are going to like it."

Safety Not Guaranteed Trailer: Aubrey Plaza Might Be Mark Duplass's Time-Traveling Buddy

I love the bad attitude Aubrey Plaza cops as Parks and Recreation's droll April Ludgate, but she's taking a little departure from all that sarcasm for the indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed (though it wouldn't be Plaza if she weren't just a little bit snarky). She plays Darius, an intern at a magazine who tags along with a writer (Jake Johnson) for an unusual assignment: track down the poster of a Craigslist ad, Kenneth (Mark Duplass), who's trying to find someone to time travel with. When Darius and co. find him, Darius's research of Kenneth turns into what looks like genuine affection for the eccentric guy.

There are some twee elements to this trailer, but I'm loving this look at the movie, mostly because I like New Girl's Johnson so much (and it's nice to see him playing someone who's more together than Nick). I've also got a soft spot for Duplass, who's usually either behind the camera on his own features or talking filthy about football on FX's The League, but here, he's front and center and proves he's both charming and funny. All in all, I'm pretty eager to see this movie, and shoot, I'd drink the Kool-Aid too if I could time travel to the future for its June 8 release date. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Last night at the Oscars Undefeated, a story about a football team at an underprivileged high school, took home the Oscar for Best Documentary. If you love learning, chances are you love documentaries. This past Summer we were treated to Gloria in Her Own Words, which chronicled icon Gloria Steinem's eventful life, but there are many more films about the triumphs of women. Some of these films follow women making their way through truly horrific situations, and others are lighter tales of self-made entrepreneurs or proponents of feminist creativity. Each of the women documented is powerful and inspiring in her own right. While I could probably compile a list of a hundred docs about women I admire and love, here are 10 I've recently come across that have made me re-examine the beauty and power of my gender.

Sarah Jessica Parker left her NYC home Friday with two of her three children. Her 10-year-old son James Wilkie Broderick led the way to their car, while SJP followed carrying Loretta, one of her twin girls. It seems baby Tabitha didn't go along for the outing, but she's often seen exploring the Big Apple with mom SJP and Loretta.

Yesterday was a special occasion for the family, as Matthew Broderick's Ferris Bueller Super Bowl ad aired. However, SJP doesn't care for the Super Bowl too much. The actress, who's fresh from filming a small part in Lovelace, said recently, "I can tell you honesty, I will not be watching the football game. I have absolutely no interest. . . How long does [the game] last? Up to four hours? Really? If I had four hours of leisure time, I would watch the first episode of Luck and start the first season of Mad Men or Downton Abbey. You get my point."

Britney Spears Does the School Run With Her Bare-Footed Sons

Britney Spears picked up her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James from a class yesterday in LA. She had her hands full as she led the boys back to their SUV. Brit is in charge of looking after the little ones since their dad Kevin Federline is off on a job in Australia. Kevin Federline's out of the hospital after a health scare on Monday, when he was taken to the doctor's with chest pains. He apparently felt ill while filming a workout session with the Australian football team Greater Western Sydney Giants for the weight loss reality show Excess Baggage. He's currently down under and being looked after by his girlfriend Victoria Prince, who's also keeping an eye on their baby daughter Jordan Kay.

Britney, meanwhile, is planning for her upcoming wedding with fiancé Jason Trawick. The pair got engaged just before Christmas, and she was quick to show off her massive new Neil Lane band that features at least 90 small diamonds. Britney's marriage to Jason will be the beginning of a new chapter in her personal, and legal, life. Once they're legally wed, the conservatorship her father established for her welfare back in 2008 will finally end.
