A Hearty Serving of Food Reality Shows

I know that you guys - like me - are very excited for Bravo's "Top Chef Miami," which starts on June 13. But if you need some food-centric reality TV to hold you over until then, there is plenty to go around. A sampler:

Chef Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" (pictured) premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Bravo's brilliantly conceived "4 Star All Stars" special, pitting "Top Chef" finalists from seasons 1 and 2 against each other, airs this Wednesday, June 6, at 10 p.m. I'm totally rooting for Harold to kick Ilan's butt.
"The Next Food Network Star" had its two-hour premiere last night, and if Yum's recap is any indication, this season is going to be much better than the last two.

I've never gotten into "Hell's Kitchen," but after reading more about it, I'm not sure why I've been avoiding it. It sounds like "Top Chef" with a slightly megalomaniac host (Ramsay) and a very cool prize: The 12 contestants are vying for the job of head chef at a new Italian restaurant at the Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa in Vegas. But this type of culinary programming hasn't let up; last night was the premiere of Food Network Star, and tonight Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliott, and Joe Bastianich will return for the second series kickoff of Masterchef. Are You Over Cooking Reality TV Shows?

Between the Top Chef franchise, Next Iron Chef, and Food Network Star, there are probably enough reality TV cooking competitions to comprise an entire network. But the buck doesn't stop there.

On June 30, Food Network's Extreme Chef will air, taking a set of brave chefs to a new level of thrill and adventure. We're talking gathering ingredients from a bucket of rattlesnakes, cooking off a hot car engine, and making a meal on a deserted island! Exciting stuff, people.

I've got to be honest: my enthusiasm for cooking reality TV shows has long waned. And with America's Next Great Restaurant getting canceled, and an utterly lackluster Top Chef Masters 3, I can't help but think the rest of the country's interest has ebbed, too.

For us, the best part about Mondays is our girls' night viewing party for The Bachelor. But sometimes we find ourselves at home for the show, competing with our significant other for the TV (hello, Monday night football). So instead of fighting your man for tube time, here's how to get him hooked on the show!

Bribe him with food: If you're enjoying yummy homemade snacks and an alcoholic beverage while watching the reality dating show, he's sure to join you on the couch for at least a little bit. And once he gets a taste of the guilty pleasure, he won't be able to turn back!
Tease the girl-on-girl action: Show him the clip from Ben F's Bachelor premiere last week of two of the contestants cuddling, and he may be curious enough to start watching! Not to mention, you're basically asking him to ogle a ton of hot girls.
Give him a distraction: The only way I kept my SO seated beside me during the show was by getting him a handheld gaming device. Your man may be entertained by video games, his iPhone, or his laptop, but he'll be secretly watching the show - trust me!
Entice with the hilarious parts: With all the horrible pickup lines, delusional contestants, and dating faux parts, The Bachelor is full of the humorous parts of single life that he may miss now that's dating you. Show him some of the best, worst moments to get him laughing along with you on Mondays.

If your goal is to lose weight and exercise more, forget the deprivation diet and marathon workouts. New research shows that taking baby steps - not giant leaps -is the best way to get lasting results. A study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that participants who made one small, potentially permanent change in their food choices and/or physical activity each week (such as drinking one fewer can of soda or walking five more minutes each day) lost more than twice as much belly fat, two and half more inches off their waistlines, and about four times more weight during a four-month program, compared with those who followed traditional calorie-restriction and physical-activity guidelines.

"When you focus on just a couple of small changes at a time, you begin to ingrain some healthy habits that last for a lifetime, rather than trying an all-or-nothing approach that more often than not fails because it's too hard to follow," says Lesley Lutes, PhD, an assistant professor in the department of psychology at East Carolina University. We've uncovered these simple steps (with proven results) to help you move more, eat less, and look and feel better than ever. Add just one or two a week to your regular routine and you can lose nearly three inches off your waistline and be about 10 pounds lighter come in a few months. Even better: Once these healthy habits become second nature, they'll benefit you for a lifetime.

1. Pick Up a Pen After Every Meal
Mindlessly munching on a bag of chips could result in easily polishing off the whole thing; write down how much you've eaten and you're more likely to practice portion control. Keeping a food log helps control extra calories in two ways: the combination of plain old reality check (I just ate 30 minutes ago!) and awareness that what you're putting in your mouth will soon be recorded for posterity. In a recent study, people who kept a food journal lost twice as much weight as those who didn't. When they combined it with a moderate diet and exercise plan, they lost an average of 13 pounds in 6 months. Journaling also gives you insight on your eating habits, says Lutes. Do you skip meals? Eat the same during the week as on the weekend? Binge when you're feeling stressed? "Knowing your routine helps you figure out what changes are right for you," she adds.

2. Limit High-Fat Foods to One Per Week
Tag the high-fat/high-calorie foods that are typically your favorites (our top five: cookies, candy, ice cream, potato chips, and fries) and gradually downshift. "If you're eating six of these foods a week, try to go down to five," says Lutes. Each week, drop another until you're at no more than one or two; at the same time, add in a good-for-you choice like baby carrots, sautéed broccoli, oranges, and other fresh fruits and veggies.

Adriana Lima Gets Frank About Prepping For Angel Duty

After learning how Adriana Lima preps for the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, I'm surprised she can support her angel wings. The lingerie model gave the Telegraph a very specific description of her dieting and exercise regime and it's anything but glamorous. In fact, it sounds downright dangerous, but Adriana acknowledges that she has a nutritionist monitoring her. The paper explains:

Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show, she will drink only protein shakes - "no solids." The concoctions include powdered egg. Two days before the show, she will abstain from the daily gallon of water, and "just drink normally." Then, 12 hours before the show, she will stop drinking entirely. "No liquids at all so you dry out, sometimes you can lose up to eight pounds just from that," she says.

No solid food . . .or water? Meanwhile, she's working out twice a day. Adriana is making it clear that she has to practically torture herself to attain the runway look. Do you think it's helpful that she shares this reality?
