Movie Preview: Fireflies in the Garden

I feel compelled to give a warning before showing this trailer: Proceed only if you're feeling emotionally strong. Fireflies in the Garden boasts an impressive cast (Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Ryan Reynolds, Hayden Panettiere) and it looks to be well-made - though I'm not sure I saw it very clearly through my tears. This film looks gut-wrenching.

The plot description is basic ("The semi-autobiographical story centers on the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced by an unexpected tragedy"), but you get a pretty clear sense of what the movie's all about from the international trailer, which you can see after the jump. The family drama screened at the Berlin Film Festival, but it's unclear when it will arrive in American theaters. To see the international trailer, read more.

Hayden and Julia Join Forces for Fireflies

"Heroes" darling Hayden Panettiere has joined the cast of Julia Roberts' latest project, Fireflies in the Garden, which began filming in Austin last week. The film is loosely based on director Dennis Lee's life, and, according to the story description, "explores the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced with an unexpected tragedy."

Though the impressive cast also includes Ryan Reynolds, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe, none of them can say that they've played an indestructible cheerleader before, so Hayden's got that going for her. I'll be interesting to see how the actress handles a dramatic film role.

Rewind: This Week's Buzz

Sad week (again) as Hollywood mourns the loss of two more great talents: Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. Both late stars will be seen in the upcoming film Soul Men.
In other sucky news, Harry Potter was pushed back until July of 2009 (with Twilight now taking its Nov. 21 slot), and the songwriter responsible for hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" passed away.
In the news of the odd: Angelina Jolie replaced Tom Cruise in an action movie and Dane Cook is upset that this movie poster makes him look like a d-bag.
ABC has a lot of weirdness going on, too. They want to make the J-Lo rom-com Maid in Manhattan into a TV show, and they launched National Stay-at-Home Week.
A couple of interesting movie previews premiered this week, like the great-looking new Tyler Perry movie with an excellent cast, The Lucky Ones starring Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña, and the disturbing Fireflies in the Garden.
OK, I'm a little bit ready for September to get here, mostly because of all the great Fall TV previews I keep seeing. Check out new photos and some clips from Gossip Girl, a first look at the new TNT legal drama starring ~~Zack Morris~~ Mark-Paul Gosselaar and a peek at the next season of Greek!
