Normally, I'm nowhere near as fond of a cover as I am of the original song (few people are, I'd wager). Usually they just sound like cheap knockoffs. So I expected little of TV on the Radio's cover of David Bowie's "Heroes," and maybe that's partially why I liked it so much.

Over the weekend, I was hanging out with friends when David Bowie's "Young Americans" hit the jukebox and, of course, everyone started singing along. It suddenly struck me that that song would probably be awesome to hear live, and that I bet Bowie gives a fantastic live performance. I started thinking of other musicians I'd love to check out in concert — including those whom I'll never get the chance to see.

Remember in the '90s when the World Wide Web was tied to really lofty ideals? This movie does. Josh Hartnett plays a dot-com entrepreneur who, in one scene from the trailer of August insists that this new phenomenon will increase freedom and choice.

The first track from Anywhere I Lay My Head, Scarlett Johansson's album of Tom Waits covers, gave us a pretty good indication of where the album might be headed: thick, fuzzy production, androgynous vocals, and some pretty drastic reinterpretations of Waits' songs. Now, six full tracks from the album are streaming online, and sure enough, they all have a similar vibe.
Those of you who thought the vocals on "Anywhere I Lay My Head" sounded manly will have a field day with "Town With No Cheer," on which Scarlett's voice sounds flat and almost spooky.

When David Bowie curates, I listen. You'll understand why when you see the just-announced lineup for the new music festival that the eternally cool singer has put together.
Scheduled for May 9 through 19 in New York City, the 2007 H&M High Line Festival will feature Bowie darlings the Arcade Fire, as well as the Polyphonic Spree, Secret Machines, Air, Deerhoof, and comedian Ricky Gervais.

David Bowie turns 60 today, officially making him one of the smoothest sexagenarians on the planet. Sure, he's looking a bit rough around the edges, but in his poise, style, and performance, he's a great example of how rock stars can grow old gracefully.
To celebrate, I've dug up this contemplative and self-reflective track from Bowie's 1980 album, Scary Monsters.

Consider my mind officially blown. This site called The Christmas Spot, has 101 Christmas videos you can watch online — from It's a Wonderful Life to the Festivus episode of "Seinfeld."
In addition to the full-length movies and TV specials, there's also a huge selection of Christmas music videos (including Wham's "Last Christmas" and David Bowie and Bing Crosby doing "Little Drummer Boy"), commercials (remember the bell-ringing Hershey's Kisses?), and miscellaneous holiday cheer (the Ali G Christmas Message).
