What's Buzzworthy: Comfort Movies

Wow, you all really blew me away with your response to my most recent Buzzworthy challenge about comfort movies. Your lists of trusty favorites were fantastic - but I really loved reading your descriptions of how and why the movies came to be your fallback films. It was so hard to pick some to list here, so I highly recommend reading through them all yourselves! Tough as it was to choose, here are just a few of the many that caught my eye:

The Princess Bride
Bookmarked by Fab_Kitty, who wrote: "When stuck in bed on a sick day, I always watch The Princess Bride. In a fevered delirium, I also always giggle and think about how little Fred Savage and I are both escaping our illnesses through the endearing story of Wesley and Buttercup. Hooray for being easily amused!"

Party Girl
This Parker Posey movie was tagged by marcella, who said: "Great comfort movie with a hilarious Parker Posey as the title character that parties so much that she can't afford to pay her rent. She gets a job as a librarian. It's totally a trashy film, but I turn to it when I want to turn my brain off and just laugh."

read more Now and Then PinkUnicorn picked this movie, which is another one of my own reliable favorites. She wrote: "The ultimate comfort movie! I love the exploration of how women's relationships with each other evolve over time. Plus it is simple yet touching. I have memorized every line!"
Being There Phil picked out this movie, saying: "Every comfort movie needs a comforting figure. And to me, none can be more comforting than Chance, better known as Chauncy Gardener. This movie is great in the sense that you can accept it at any frequency. Whether if I'm in an overly contemplative mood and want to think and run around in a circle in my mind, this movie works. But, only when I turn off and just appreciate the film for its hilarious scenes and misconceptions do I really appreciate Hal Ashby's brilliant little satire."
Dead Poets Society scorpstarr77 picked a movie that's had a huge impact on her life: "This movie is the reason I was an English major in college, the reason I decided to become a teacher, and the reason I fell head over heels for Josh Charles at a young age. I find it uplifting and inspiring, and also devastating - always there when I need a good cry!"
Home Alone This old standby was picked by komler, who sounds like she'll be pulling the movie out again not too long from now: "Home Alone is one of the movies that I watch every year around Christmas - or when I want it to be Christmas and be around my family."
Finding Nemo Here's how Phasekitty explained why she's partial to this Pixar flick: "My boyfriend loves horror movies, but when I watch them I get scared and have trouble falling asleep. He knows now that if he wants to see a scary movie with me, all he has to do is have this movie on standby that night. A little Finding Nemo to take my mind of the aliens, serial killers, zombies, and vampires and I'm sleeping like a baby."

What's Buzzworthy? Comfort Movies

Watching challenging films is a worthy goal, but sometimes, I just want to relax with a movie I've seen a zillion times before. My comfort movies may not be the best or smartest movies in my collection, but they're perfect for curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and mentally reciting the lines I've heard a million times before.

So for this week's Buzzworthy challenge, I'm asking you to bookmark your favorite comfort movies, the most trustworthy films in your collection. I'm starting you off with Beautiful Girls, a movie I've seen more times than I could count on my fingers and toes put together. All through college, I toted around a VHS tape with a recording of it from my parents' TV; then, I upgraded - slightly - to a beat-up official version I bought from eBay. I finally got the movie on DVD a couple of years back, and I still pull it out every time I just want to watch something familiar. For good measure, I've tossed in a couple of my other standbys, Laurel Canyon and Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Take This Waltz Trailer: Michelle Williams Is Torn Between Two Lovers

The trailer for Take This Waltz has "precious indie movie" written all over it, right down to the fact that the preview gives us little in the way of plot. Instead, we glean what we can from watching Michelle Williams lead a comfortable married life with Seth Rogen, until she's enticed by a handsome new guy (played by Luke Kirby).

Though I wish this preview had more dialogue, I'm already looking forward to seeing Seth Rogen step outside his comfort zone with some deeper material than what he's usually given, and I can't wait to see him and Williams as an onscreen couple. Are You Ready For Marriage, Or Are You Rushing Into It?

When I was a little girl I remember watching all the Disney Princess movies (You know the ones: Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin… there seemed to be an endless supply), and I loved everything about those fairy tale stories-the handsome prince, the white dress, the cake, the pumpkin stagecoach, and the big castle to live happily ever after in-I always pictured my future playing out just like my favorite princesses. Doesn't every girl?

We all know the saying "first comes love, then comes marriage," and when you feel you've found your perfect match, you start to picture yourself eventually settling down. You see the future, you see building a strong and wonderful married life together, and even creating a family. You start imagining fairy tales and castles and Cinderella dresses . . .

But you know what? It's not that simple. I wish it were. There's a lot more to marriage than just the love you feel for one another. The Beatles' might have said, "All you need is love," but real life doesn't work that way. Ever. Marriage requires effort.

Before you start calling up wedding coordinators and venues, before you start looking for a dress and picking out a cake, put away your emotions long enough to ask yourself a few questions.

What makes this person The One?

Out of all the relationships you've been in, what makes this person the one for you? Answering this question is crucial to prevent yourself from entering a marriage for all the wrong reasons. Never pressure yourself with the idea that you may never have another opportunity to get married. There's always time. Your wedding is just one day while your marriage is for a lifetime.

When I met my husband's family for the first time I saw first hand how he treated his sisters. His sisters are 13 and 20 years younger than he is, and when I saw them together, I knew he'd be a great father. Among his other great qualities, that's what sealed the deal for me.

Do you share the same values?

Issues about careers, finances, raising children, discipline, sex, spending, religion, and values are the most important subjects that need to be addressed before you even think about engagement rings. If you can't plan for and effectively discuss these topics with your partner, you won't be able to merge your two lives together with any amount of success. If you don't feel comfortable bringing them up, then you're not ready to say, "I do."

When my husband and I started dating we talked about our personal values and beliefs. We found we shared more in common than either one of us thought. Coming from similar family backgrounds, we found it easy to envision a future together, and another way that made merging our lives together almost effortless.

5 Entertaining and Romantic Movie Dates

In honor of this year's Sundance Film Festival that just began yesterday, it's time to explore different movie date night options for you and your honey to warm up to this Winter. Beyond your average movie complex, there is a whole world of independent theaters and festivals to explore and attend to have a romantic and memorable date experience. Here are a few ideas to reinvigorate the ol' movie night standard.

Technicolor features: Films in technicolor have intensely vivid and dreamy hues. Usually independent and historical theaters will screen special technicolor features, and it's a unique and rare opportunity to see such amazing colors and classic films like Gone With the Wind on the big screen. Even if the film you see isn't a classic, it's still nice to curl up close and enjoy the romantic, sleepy quality of technicolor.
Historical theaters: Check to see if your town has at least one historical theater with a classic, blinking marquee and intricate interior architecture. Research the history behind the building before you go so you and your date can appreciate the theater's story and architectural details upon your visit.
Cult midnight movies: There is an entire culture that follows midnight screenings of B-rated films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The especially diehard will dress up, act out scenes, and sing along. Attending a midnight movie like Rocky can be a ridiculous yet fun way to bond and break any inhibitions.
Film festivals: Independent, horror, documentary, shorts, underground, and international are just a few of the dozens of film festivals that take place in North America. It's cold and dark during the Winter, so you might as well use the time to expand your film repertoire and have a dozen new stories and concepts to discuss with your date afterward.
Drive-ins: If you live in an area with a milder climate, you could drive out of town to go to a drive-in theater. The tickets are cheaper, you're in the comfort of your car, and you can bring your own food. Most importantly, depending on your parking spot, you might have enough privacy to engage in some high-school-esque backseat action.

Matt LeBlanc Says Finally Winning Golden Globe "Feels Pretty Good!"

Matt LeBlanc finally took home a Golden Globe tonight for his work in Episodes, after being nominated three times for playing Joey on Friends all those years ago. In the new series, Matt plays a version of himself and they're currently in the middle of shooting season two in London. When asked about a possible Friends movie, Matt said he doesn't think that is a good idea at all and he's just happy for the writing on his new series. Check it out:

On playing a version of himself: When we started to do the show, my initial reaction was, "What do you mean play myself? I’m not really comfortable with this. We're not doing a documentary." I don't mind being the brunt of a joke if it’s a good joke. So far it's good jokes.

On real Matt Leblanc vs. Episodes Matt LeBlanc: Hopefully the Matt LeBlanc in real life is less damaged. I like to think I have less emotional problems than he does. Hopefully. My job is to make people laugh. If that’s happening than I’ve done my job. It doesn’t really matter if I’m being myself or being the character.

On finally winning, but not for Friends: This is my fourth nomination, I was nominated for the last three years of Friends. When you don’t win you always says it's nice to be nominated, but I gotta say this feels pretty good. Friends was an awesome experience and this is a similar experience. I can't say enough about the writing on the show. I learned my lesson when I did the spin-off, it wasn’t the same. Now I have good writing again and it makes all the difference in the world.

On knowing what is funny: How do I know what's funny? When you read the script if you laugh, chances are it's funny. If you’re rehearsing, if the grips laugh it's probably funny. It nobody’s laughing, it's probably not funny. It’s a pretty simple equation.

Bring on the Popcorn: 10 Kiddie Flicks For 2012 (and One Just For Moms)

Carey Mulligan Tells W About Facing Her Nude Scene Fears in Shame

Carey Mulligan shows some skin on the cover of W's January 2012 issue. She's been off in Australia working on The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, but it's her most recent release, Shame, that she discussed with the magazine. The Steve McQueen-directed movie earned a NC-17 rating for its graphic sex and frequent nude scenes, and leading man Michael Fassbender has gotten a great deal of attention for the amount of time he spends in the buff. Carey also has her moment sans clothes, and she spoke about that, as well as getting the role and her start in acting, with the publication. Carey Mulligan told W:

On going nude in Shame: "I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of nudity . . . When it came to this, it just seemed so obvious that she is the sort of person who would have no trouble being naked in front of any family member, especially not her brother . . . I thought I had a week before the nude scene to go to the gym, but we shot it on my first day of filming."
On wanting the role in the picture: "When I read the script, I found it terrifying. My English agents sent it to me and said, 'There’s this amazing part.' For me, as an actor, it was sort of scary. I’d seen Hunger, which was done by Steve McQueen, the director of Shame, and I thought it was just incredible. And I’d always wanted to work with Michael Fassbender, who had been cast as the brother. So, I asked to have a meeting with Steve to pitch myself for the job."
On being dramatic as a child: "I would put my earphones on and sing along to soundtracks of musicals like Les Misérables. I’d act it out in the mirror and cry. When I was 11 or 12, I asked my parents about going to a performing arts school, and they said no. Although I did audition to be a presenter on a TV show called Dig It."
