TV Tonight: Canterbury's Law

Julianna Margulies hasn't had a regular TV gig since she left ER in 2000, but tonight she returns to the small screen - and this time, she's in charge of her own ensemble. In Canterbury's Law, which premieres tonight on Fox, Margulies stars as Elizabeth Canterbury, a tough-talking defense attorney with her own sad past: Her young son was abducted, and the case has never been solved.

Canterbury's Law has a good pedigree - its executive producers are the folks behind Rescue Me - but in the couple of episodes Fox sent to critics (including tonight's premiere), it suffers from the problem of too many convenient twists. Canterbury is relieving the tension between her and her husband by sleeping with another man - who, naturally, just happens to be a private investigator who can do favors when Canterbury runs up against a rival prosecutor. And of course, most of the cases she works involve children who have somehow had their futures permanently harmed, just so viewers can be reminded at every turn that she, too, has lost a child.

That said, Canterbury's Law isn't boring - but it isn't terribly challenging, either. And while Margulies gives Canterbury some acerbic wit to go along with her courtroom cojones, she still can't hold a candle to Glenn Close playing Damages' Patty Hewes, this season's gold standard for ruthless, mysterious attorneys. Canterbury's a risk-taker, sure, but it's not always clear why the risks she's taking are even worth it - other than to manufacture some tension to keep the show going from week to week.

Still, fans of Margulies, or of legal dramas in general, might find something to like here. It may be mediocre at the moment, but it does show promise. To check out a promo and a clip with Margulies talking about her character, just read more.
