Where the Wild Things Are lived up to its big expectations, taking the top spot at the box office this weekend with $32.4 million.
Audiences disregarded Law Abiding Citizen's less than stellar reviews (including my own), and the film took second place and raked in $21.2 million. Paranomal Activity continues to soar, climbing up to number three and making $20.1 million.

Well, it looks like Très isn't the only one who loves a good horror comedy — Zombieland took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $25 million in ticket sales. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs slid to No. 2 with $16.7 million, followed by the Toy Story 1 &2 3-D double feature with $12.5 million.

Dancing and Bruce Willis weren't enough to knock kid flick Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs out of this weekend's top spot at the box office. Sony's 3D Meatballs held its place for the second weekend in a row, making $24.6 million, followed by Willis's sci-fi movie Surrogates ($15 million) and Fame ($10 million), which both just opened Friday.

This weekend's new movies were full of A-list talent but Sony's cute animated characters topped them all. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs made $30.1 million at the box office. The children's book adaptation in 3D had a huge lead over The Informant!, which earned $10.5 million.

Guess people still haven't tired of seeing Tyler Perry in a grandma frock! His latest film in the Madea saga, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, took the box office crown with an estimated $24 million this weekend. Second place went to 9, which raked in $10 million.

Apparently Labor Day moviegoers wanted to be freaked out over the holiday, because horror movie The Final Destination topped the box office again this weekend, earning $12.3 million. This was its second weekend at the top, with Inglorious Basterds staying behind it at No. 2.

Even without this upcoming end-of-Summer holiday weekend, this is already the highest-grossing Summer ever at the domestic box office. Check it out:
Through Sunday, Summer BO revs were $4.17 billion, compared to $4.16 billion for Summer 2007, the previous record holder for best Summer sesh.
The Labor Day weekend should add another $100 million or more to the total tally, meaning the Summer would be up at least 3 percent in grosses over 2007.

Lots of you said that you'd rather watch scary movies around Halloween, but that didn't stop the masses from checking out horror films at the box office this weekend. The Final Destination scored the top spot, taking in $28.3 million and marking the most successful opening weekend of the franchise. Inglourious Basterds was bumped to number two with a little over $20 million in its second week.

Quentin Tarantino's fans did not disappoint him this weekend, helping Inglourious Basterds rake in over $37 million at the box office this past weekend. Here's your fun revenue statistic of the day: it's the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie released in the second half of August. District 9 was knocked to the number two slot with $18.9 million while G.I.

Movie audiences favored the aliens and the action this past weekend as the Peter Jackson-produced extra-terrestrial film District 9 took the top spot with an estimated $37 million. In second place with $22.5 million was last weekend's big earner, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
