Bryan Singer May Direct a Battlestar Galactica Movie

In 2001, director Bryan Singer and producer Tom DeSanto were preparing to shoot a pilot episode for a Battlestar Galactica series that would act as a sequel to the '70s show when 9/11 happened and SciFi pulled the plug on the project, feeling nervous about airing the Cylon sneak attack. Years later, of course, a whole other team of people did manage to bring BG back to TV, earning a cult following and setting up for a spinoff series, Caprica. Now, reportedly Bryan Singer is attached once more to BG - this time as director of a big screen story.

Now it's a question of which story, exactly, will be told on that big screen: One related to the most recent TV series? Or something closer to what Singer had in mind years ago? One writer over at HitFIx figures a movie version about the recently completed series wouldn't make sense for Singer to do: "I'm not sure I buy that Singer's going to come in just to direct a big-screen version of the show that just finished its run. The series wrapped up pretty conclusively, with The Plan and Caprica already in motion as extensions of that story in different directions."

For his part, writer/producer of the latest BG, Ron Moore, has said he has "no problem with Tom [DeSanto] or anyone else who wants to do a revival of the original cast and characters or do some kind of continuation. If they can get a good story together and get the pieces lined up to do it, then more power to them."

So, fans, if this is a new take on the premise, will you be interested? Or are you too attached to the most recent series to want to see an all-new reimagining on the big screen?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. HBO's The Alzheimer's Project is also out on DVD.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5
One of SciFi's (or, sorry, SyFy's) signature and most critically acclaimed series, Battlestar Galactica, ended this year. Now you can own the DVD and complete your collection, or if you're catching up with the series, you can add to your queue and witness the wrap-up for yourself.

Since I haven't seen it yet, here's how Netflix describes the final season: "Dire new challenges to the tenuous human-Cylon truce that has enabled them all to reach Earth, where they encounter a world vastly different than they expected. As revolt spreads throughout the fleet, the final Cylon model is revealed, and the ultimate fate of both races hangs in the balance. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell star."

There are DVD extras aplenty, including deleted scenes, several unaired extended episodes, commentary with producers and show directors, David Eick's video blogs, and a featurette titled "A Look Back."

Fast and Furious
A lot of people went to see this movie when it hit theaters. It was like the Paul Blart: Mall Cop of action movies this year. Anyway, here's how Netflix describes the "plot": "Fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) must team with his old nemesis Agent Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and take on a common enemy in the latest full-throttle installment of the speed-racing franchise. Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster reprise their roles as Letty and Mia, respectively, in the action adventure, which features pulse-pounding convoy heists and precision tunnel crawls."

Check out these featurettes: "Los Bandoleros: Vin Diesel's original short film provides an exciting back-story of characters and the need for fuel that sets up the explosive land train heist in Fast and Furious," (ha!) "Under the Hood-Muscle Cars: A look at some of the muscle cars in the film including the return of Vin Diesel's iconic Charger," and "Driving School With Vin Diesel: Vin Diesel hits the track to brush up on his stunt driving."

Dollhouse: Season One
People often, you know, do stuff on Friday nights and may not have seen this latest and greatest TV creation from Buffy mastermind Joss Whedon just yet. Despite its flaws, I really got into this show! The first season really improves about four or five episodes in, so this is one of those instances when you have to hang in there and trust that it gets pretty interesting, especially if you are into science fiction.

Eliza Dushku plays Echo, part of a group of people whose personalities are wiped clean from their brains so that they can be imprinted as lots of different people. Sometimes these people are cool (super smart detective types) and sometimes they are, well, creepy, and used for nefarious purposes, like sex. In this first season we learn about the mysterious history of who Echo really is, as well as the dark secrets hidden inside the Dollhouse.

Special features include the original unaired pilot titled "Echo," deleted scenes, and the making of Dollhouse.

Dark Knight, Battlestar Galactica Win at the 2009 Saturn Awards

It's that time of year again! The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films handed out the Saturn Awards last night to honor the best actors, movies, and TV shows in these genres. It's a lot for one awards show to cover, but these awards honored some great entertainment that doesn't always get mainstream attention.

Of course, some blockbusters got recognized, too: The Dark Knight took home lots of awards, including another honor for the late Heath Ledger. Iron Man also did very well, with Robert Downey Jr. nabbing the award for best actor and Jon Favreau for director. I love that even the little vampire movie Let the Right One In scored an award. Battlestar Galactica made a splash in the television categories, winning three awards.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

Pineapple Express
You guys, Pineapple Express is not just a stoner movie, OK? James Franco was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work! This is award-worthy stuff! I kid, I kid. But it is funny to me that Franco is up for a serious award for playing a pot dealer who has lines like, "Pandora can't go back into the box - he only comes out."

This movie was a lot of fun to see in the theaters and as a DVD it will probably get the most play in dorm rooms, frat houses, and 20-something apartments across the nation. Seth Rogen and James Franco are a match made in stoner heaven, but be warned: The movie is actually pretty graphically violent (just a heads-up if that's a buzzkill for you).

Special features include an extended version of the film, commentary with the filmmakers and cast, and of course, the gag reel.

The Wackness
The Wackness first premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival and quickly charmed audiences. I myself was smitten when I later saw the movie at the Tribeca Film Festival. Starring Josh Peck, Ben Kingsley, Olivia Thirlby and, briefly, Mary-Kate Olsen, it's a quirky story of young love on the Upper East Side in 1994.

I highly recommend this movie (despite that one cringe-inducing moment). In fact, like Pineapple Express, The Wackness features a whole lot of pot smoking, so today's What to Netflix is practically a themed movie night!

Special features include a featurette entitled "Keeping it Real: A Day in the Life of Writer/Director Jonathan Levine," behind-the-scenes footage, and deleted scenes.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season One
Showtime's Secret Diary of a Call Girl, is sly and slick, pulling back the curtain on the world of sex-for-money in London and leaving you feeling like the ultimate insider. The show stars Billie Piper as Belle, a high-class hooker - and the alter ego of Hannah, an everyday gal who prefers jeans and books to corsets and stilettos. There's not as much sex in the show as you would initially assume but there is a lot of charm. If you missed the first season of this show when it was on the air, now's the time to catch up.

DVD extras include a featurette titled "Billie Piper - Coming to America."

The Tudors: Season Two
Hey, ye olde Tudors fans! Season two is now out on DVD, which is fun because I prefer to watch this show in one big clump rather than week-to-week. Jonathan Rhys Meyers returns as the young King of England who gets down to business divorcing the queen in order to make room for the ambitious Anne Boleyn. In this season the historical period known as the Reformation is ushered in, as King Henry looks to break from the Catholic church and faces resistance from his own court - not to mention Pope Paul III, played by the wonderfully chilling Peter O'Toole.

Special features include a featurette on the descendants of Henry, a premiere episode of This American Life: Season 2, and photo galleries.

First Look: Battlestar Galactica's Final Season

Holy frak, Battlestar Galactica fans! The trailer for the show's final batch of episodes is out now, and it's a pretty dramatic-looking batch of scenes. There's Cylon-seeking, lots of talk of suffering, and some things blowing up. Much of the imagery is minimalist, gray and black, and almost more like an independent film than a big-name Sci Fi series.

Battlestar's final episodes, dubbed "The Epic Journey," start airing Jan. 16. How are you all hoping it ends? You can always test your knowledge of the last batch of episodes or catch up on the whole show in just over eight minutes, and to check out the final promo, just read more.

Battlestar Galactica Producer Imagines Sci Fi Show for Fox

Ron Moore is his name, science fiction is his game.
Moore, a former Star Trek writer and one of the folks behind Sci Fi's version of Battlestar Galactica, is at it again: He's cooked up a new sci fi pilot called Virtuality that looks like it could land on the Fox schedule next Spring.

What's the story?
The series follows a dozen astronauts who are sent on a mission to find a distant solar system. To keep the astronauts from getting bored during the 10-year voyage, their shuttle is equipped with virtual reality modules that let the astronauts assume different identities and travel to far-off lands. But then a bug is discovered in the system - and one of the astronauts could be responsible.

"Too sci fi" for NBC?
That's the buzz from industry insiders, who say NBC didn't think the show fit its brand. Fox bought it almost immediately, though.

Fox sure is into the sci-fi stuff these days.
The network is also developing Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, JJ Abrams' Fringe, and a comedy called Boldly Going Nowhere about life on a spaceship.
