August is the month when Summer comes to a close and entertainment-land gets a case of the doldrums. It's typically slow for music releases, and Hollywood doesn't necessarily put out the year's best films this month either. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few good gems out there that you'll want to get your hands on this month.

August Rush is a fantasy-drama (I think) that comes out in October, but I know many of you are fans of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (don't forget to enter my "Tudors" DVD giveaway!), so I'm passing along this brand-new trailer. Keri Russell also stars, as Louis Rush's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) love interest. Together the two have a child, August Rush, who they are forced to give up (played by Freddie Highmore who played Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

Now that the filmmakers have finally settled on the two male leads for The Fighter, a lady love has been cast. The endearing Amy Adams will join Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the story about a famed Massachusetts boxer. Based on a true story, Wahlberg will play "Irish" Mickey Ward and Bale will play Ward's "trainer-brother" Dick Eklund, and the movie will follow "their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London."

It was Broadway's turn in the spotlight on Sunday as the 2008 Tony Awards took over Radio City Music Hall. Whoopi Goldberg — in her Christian Siriano-designed dress! — presided over the ceremony, which saw In the Heights take home the award for Best Musical and August: Osage County named Best Play.

The rumor mill has been working overtime spreading the "news" that Jake Gyllenhaal will play superhero Captain Marvel in the upcoming film Shazam! As reported here on Thursday, source told the New York Daily News that director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to nab Gyllenhaal for the role.
However, screenwriter John August, who was hired to adapt the comic book for screen, is puzzled by this rumor, seeing as there isn't even a movie to cast yet!

We may not be getting the crisp fall weather just yet, but we are getting previews for tons of movies opening in the fall. In preparation for this autumn and winter at the theaters, I've broken up the lengthy list of upcoming movies into many small themes for my Fall Movie Preview series. This way, you'll be in the know when the chillier months roll around, bringing a whole new crop of new films.
