Do You Listen to Audiobooks?

Yesterday I asked how often you read, so do audiobooks count? Listening to a book may not be the same as reading, but if someone asks me whether I've read a certain book, I'll say yes, even if I just listened to it. Growing up, my mom always had audiobooks on hand for road trips, and I've dabbled in them at the gym. Are you an avid audioreader?

What Ways Are You Reading Books These Days?

The book publisher Random House recently announced that it will be releasing thousands more of its books in digital format over the next few months. The idea is that while the market for regular ol' words-on-paper books is struggling, electronic books have grown by leaps and bounds over the past year, thanks to Amazon's Kindle (Oprah's favorite gadget), among other things.

Still, the overall number of people buying electronic books is still estimated to be pretty small - which got me wondering how you're reading books these days. Have any of you jumped on the e-book bandwagon? Do you download or rent audiobooks? Or are you content with paper?

Do You Love a Good Audiobook?

Guess what: June is National Audiobook Month! Exciting, isn't it? Of course, it got me thinking of my own audiobook habits. I'm not a purist, and I enjoy keeping a book-on-iPod nearby for long road trips and the gym. It allows me to cram in more "reading" than my schedule would otherwise allow.

On the other hand, I never listen to a book that is more complicated than say, something by Stephen King or Jennifer Wiener, and I feel staunchly committed to reading the classics with my own eyes. What about you? Do you curl up with a good audiobook now and again?

No Headphones? 5 Ways to Entertain Yourself on the Treadmill

I love running on the treadmill, but let's be honest: it's not the most entertaining workout. I usually distract myself from counting down the minutes with a good playlist, audiobook, or tuning in to the gym's TVs. When I forget to take my running headphones, however, I have to entertain myself in an entirely different way. Here are some ways to keep yourself entertained (not to mention motivated!) when you can't do your normal headphones-on, tune-everything-out routine.

Change up your intervals: You should be doing this anyway once you've mastered your current workout, but if you're used to going through the motions, now's the time to change your intervals or the speed of your high-intensity runs.
Take a fit test: See how fast you can run in a set period - say, five minutes - without stopping (make sure you don't overdo it, though - stay at a level where you don't feel short of breath, lightheaded, or dizzy). Doing a fit test regularly is a good way to gauge your progress if you've been running regularly and if it's time to pick up the pace. Plus you may be surprised by just how fast you can really go!

Save your beloved tunes: You know how pumped you get when listening to a new song or your favorite CD? That's the kind of excitement you want on your runs, so have a list of favorite tunes or new ones that you reserve strictly for running playlists. The only way you can listen to them is if your feet are a-runnin'.
Run a new route each time: If you're an outdoorsy runner, finding the perfect three-mile loop can be tough, so when you do, it's tempting to stick to it. Looking at the same houses and trees all the time is boring? Mix up your routes each time you run, or run your route backwards.
Download an audiobook: Keep your attention with a captivating plot or saucy characters by listening to a novel while pounding the pavement. You'll be so distracted with who's zooming who, you won't want to stop running.

What Do You Listen to While You Work Out?

There's nothing like a fast upbeat tune to accompany any workout, but sometimes what keeps you going is a good book. I've recently been trying out audiobooks for my treadmill runs, and so far I'm a fan of "reading" while running.

Associating my runs with a book means that I'm always eager to keep going, so I'll find out how a suspenseful chapter will end or because I'm in the middle of listening to a humorous story. It also helps me look forward to a workout even when I'm telling myself there are many other things I'd rather be doing.

I still like to exercise to music (not to mention reality TV), but lately listening to David Sedaris essays on my iPod has been my motivator (and not only that, has kept me in a good mood while roaming the gym!). What do you like to listen to while you work out?

The final Harry Potter film opens this week, and while fans everywhere are getting ready to bid the series farewell in theaters, author J.K. Rowling is hoping Potter supporters will get excited for the next adventure coming their way: Pottermore.

The site, which was announced last month, will be a social hub of all things Potter, where fans can interact with each other, learn more about the world of Harry (thanks to new details to be revealed by the author herself), and a place to purchase ebooks, audiobooks, and more. There goes another staple in award season - the Grammys are a wrap! The night was chock-full of performances from standouts like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, but there were a few statuettes passed out between songs.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy took the opportunity to thank his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend" Kate Hudson while accepting the trophy for best rock album, and Lady Gaga gave props to Whitney Houston in her acceptance speech for best pop album. Lady Antebellum scored big with five golden gramophones, but it was Arcade Fire that won the biggest award of the night, taking home the accolade for album of the year.
