Zodiac Cast Gussies Up For Cannes

We got to see the Zodiac cast at their more casual photocall a little earlier, but it looks like they all scurried back to their hotels to get all glammed up for the premiere a few hours later. As always, Jake and Mark are working their suits while Kerry and Toni look gorgeous. As for Chloe, I am liking the color of that dress, and the back is a little interesting, but the whole thing comes off as a little blah. All these premieres are fun to see and all, but I'm hoping photos from the raucous after parties start popping up. You just know they get pretty crazy at Cannes.

Jake, Chloe and Mark Smile Big In Cannes

The stars of Zodiac, one of the many films competing in this year's Cannes Film Festival, looked happy to be reunited in France. Jake and Mark looked adorable flashing those big grins on the red carpet. Chloe - who can be a fashion wild card - looked so great even Mark was caught checking out her killer legs. Robert Downey Jr. was missing from the red carpet, but if he decided to skip the festival entirely, it's not from lack of co-star love. In a press conference, Jake said, "A very good, typical actor has about 25 really interesting choices and ideas within a minute. And then there's Robert Downey Jr. who has, I would say, 500 to 750 ideas. Some people would call that madness. I would call that genius."

There may have been a bit of rumored drama amongst the Zodiac cast members in the past, but it's pretty clear that they're getting along famously these days.

Jake Skips Zodiac Premiere, Rumor Mill Goes Crazy

Uh-oh. Okay, okay, before I jump to any conclusions, Jake Gyllenhaal could have been anywhere last night instead of showing up at this LA Zodiac screening. Maybe he had plans. Maybe he wanted to stick around New York. Maybe he was sick of watching his movie every night. Maybe he had to wash his hair. But...it does seem a little odd that he wasn't there last night with the rest of the cast, right? Probably nothing though. No need for rumor mongering...Well, gotta say I missed seeing his happy little face.

Jake and Mark Make Nice

It looks like Jake and Mark were able to put all their differences behind them for the NY screening of Zodiac. Now they can turn their focus on more important things - like getting dressed up all fancy and looking damn good! We hear the movie is scary but really good.

Mark vs. Jake: Indie Flick Man Fight!!

Oh, it is on! Yesterday morning we brought you a few quotes from a recent article in which Jake Gyllenhaal talked about how difficult it was to work with the notoriously picky David Fincher on Zodiac. At the time we noted that Jakey, while adorable, came on as a touch whiney in the article. Apparently we weren't the only ones who noticed. Yesterday, his co-star in the film, Mark Rufalo, had some choice comments of his own on what it was like to work with the director. Here's more:

"Yeah, you hear stories about him being so hard and intense," Ruffalo said. "And then I met him, and I immediately just loved the guy and was thinking , 'Well, when is he going to change? When is this guy that you keep hearing about going to pop up?' And my relationship and friendship with him got deeper as we went along. I think Fincher, what he has no patience for is incompetence or just a casual attitude toward the work. If you come in and you don't know your lines and you're not prepared, Fincher's going to eat you for breakfast. You know? And so the actors who complain about Fincher are usually the ones who don't show up knowing their shit, kind of."

Ah. So that whole thing last week with Jake Gyllenhaal's thinly-veiled Fincher critiques ("So there came a point where I would say, well, what do I do? Where’s the risk?") in The New York Times -- was that blown out of proportion?

"Like I said," Ruffalo replied, "Fincher only has a problem with people if they're not prepared -- if they're not ready to work when they show up. Whatever form that takes -- whether it's a prop person, an actor or whatever. I thought there were a lot of weird sour grapes in that New York Times article. We're actors, man; we get paid way too much. It's like 'Wah, wah, wah' to me to hear an actor bitching and moaning when they get paid as much as they do and we have a pretty great life. I don't have much sympathy for it."

Wow, soooo I take it he's not a huge fan of Jake's work ethic or possible sense of entitlement? It will be interesting to see how, if at all, Jakey responds to this, because we're thinking there might be a finely chiseled face somewhere in NY whose feelings are a touch hurt. Talk about an awkward red carpet much? Play nice, Boys.

Jake Is All About Collaboration, Not Perfectionism

We missed Jake at the Oscars last night, but luckily we won't have to wait much longer to see him on the big screen again. Jake was in NYC last night visiting David Letterman to promote his new movie, Zodiac, which opens on Friday. While the film is already receiving acclaim, it seems that director David Fincher was very demanding of his cast. Jake recently spoke out about his frustration with Fincher's need to excessively shoot certain scenes. Here's more:

Mr. Gyllenhaal said he came from a collaborative filmmaking family: “We share ideas, and we incorporate those ideas.” He added: “David knows what he wants, and he’s very clear about what he wants, and he’s very, very, very smart. But sometimes we’d do a lot of takes, and he’d turn, and he would say, because he had a computer there” - the movie was shot digitally - “ ‘Delete the last 10 takes.’ And as an actor that’s very hard to hear.”

And he noted that other members of the “Zodiac” cast had far more experience, adding: “I wish I could’ve had the maturity to be like: ‘I know what he wants. He wants the best out of me.’ ”
