Movie Preview: Michael Cera in Youth in Revolt

I haven't read the book on which Youth in Revolt is based, so there are more than a few parts of this trailer that are lost on me. Still, it keeps my attention and the questions I have are ones that I think will actually propel me to see the movie, rather than make me want to avoid it. It's a bizarre-looking story about Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a cynical teenager who decides that Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) is the girl of his dreams, and he'll do anything to win her heart.

Though Cera is once again playing an awkward young man, this role (or, roles, maybe?) is far more complex, interesting and demanding than anything we've seen him do before. I think it's safe to say George Michael Bluth is nowhere to be seen here.

Variety reports that Spike Lee plans to make a feature-length documentary about Michael Jordan to premier at next year's Cannes Film Festival.

Teens Rule - At the Movies, Anyway

Maybe it's the massive success of shows like Gossip Girl and The O.C.. Maybe it's because Juno was so endearing and filmmakers are desperate to make "the next Juno." Maybe it is, as I mused in my review of the documentary American Teen, simply that people are often interested in stories about teenagers because everyone can relate to the experience of going through adolescence. Whatever the reason, teens are ruling the movies these days.

Today alone there are several news items having to do with The Kids Today. Check it out:

I've been psyched about the comedy Youth in Revolt, starring Michael Cera, ever since I first caught wind of it back in August. Yet again Cera plays an awkward teen, lovestruck and bumbling. Today there's news of a director climbing aboard the project: Miguel Arteta, most known for having directed The Good Girl, though he has also helmed episodes of Ugly Betty, The Office and Freaks and Geeks.

Care to guess who will play Hayden Panettierre's clueless boyfriend in the teen comedy Daydream Nation? None other than Kieran Culkin, brother of Maccauley. Not much else is known about the project besides that Hayden will play an "acerbic teen" and they want it to be a "coming-of-age story for the 21st century . . . an intellectual comedy a la Juno and Election." Can Hayden pull off acerbic? I guess we'll find out.
This one's a little disturbing: Lizabeth Zindel's novel Girl of the Moment has gotten the green light for film adaptation. The comedy follows "a teen girl who lands a once-in-a-lifetime chance to intern for a famous teen starlet, thrusting the heroine into a glamorous and catty inner world of young celebrity." That's not the disturbing part, however. Variety continues with this quote from producer Richard Gladstein:

"There was a survey done by the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse U. that found that 43.4% of teen girls wanted to become celebrity personal assistants. They chose this option twice as often as being president of a college, three times more often than U.S. senator and four times more than chief executive of a major company."

Does anyone else find this to be disconcerting?

Michael Cera to Play Yet Another Awkward Teen

Clearly, I'm not the only one who can't seem to get enough of the gawky, geeky Michael Cera. I recently interviewed the hilarious young actor and learned all about his experiences working on the upcoming bawdy teen comedy Superbad. Now, there's another one on Cera's horizon - this time based on the C.D. Payne novel Youth in Revolt.

As ComingSoon describes it, "The story revolves around the adventures of a teenager who meets the girl of his dreams while on a family vacation and turns his life upside down in order to be with her. Payne self-published the novel in 1993. The book, centered on a cynical and sex-obsessed 14-year-old, became an underground success, and he wrote three sequels."

Since I haven't (yet) read this novel, I'm relying on Cinematical's gushy, zealous ravings about both the book and the decision to cast Michael Cera. Of the news, Cinematical's Erik Davis has a lot to say, but mostly he urges everyone to read the novel right now: "I swear to you, this thing will have you in stitches by page 20, and when you're done you'll be itching to share the experience with someone else." Well, alright then.
