Well, That Was Fast: Deadpool Spinoff Now in the Works

I was just wondering which other character (after Wolverine and Magneto) in the X-Men universe should be the focus of an origins movie, and while the majority vote in that poll goes to Gambit, Fox has announced today that Deadpool will be the next character to get his own movie. Ryan Reynolds will reportedly reprise the role he brought to life in the recent box office hit X-Men Origins: Wolverine:

Deadpool is known as "the merc with a mouth," a character that under Reynolds lived up to his billing in Wolverine until the end, when the movie deviated from the comic book persona, imbuing him with several superpowers and sewing his mouth shut.

It is understood that Reynolds would regain the ability to mouth off, with the movie going back to the roots of the character known for his slapstick tone and propensity to break the fourth wall. The character also was disfigured in Wolverine, though it's unclear at this time how much the studio would want to mess with Reynolds' handsome mug.

"Slapstick tone?" "Reynolds' handsome mug?" I might just love it already. What do you think? Can Reynolds carry a whole movie like this on his own?

After Wolverine and Magneto, What Other X-Men Origin Story Do You Want to See?

We have Wolverine's beginnings down at this point, thanks to this past weekend's blockbuster, and the story of how Professor X and Magneto came to be friends is already in the works. Now I'm curious which character in the X-Men universe should be next in line to get the "origins" treatment?

What about Storm's story? Her roots in Africa are intriguing. I also think it would be interesting to learn more about both Jean Grey and Cyclops's childhoods. And after seeing Deadpool and Gambit over the weekend, I think both characters have the kinds of rich backgrounds that could fill out an entire movie.

What do you think? After Wolverine and Magneto, whose origin story should Hollywood get to work on next?

Wolverine Character Videos . . . Well, They're Kind of Hot

For a movie like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, these brief little videos in which the characters speak directly to camera about themselves is way more intriguing to me than an ordinary old trailer. In the trailers we get glimpses of these guys, and of course there's more of an emphasis on Wolverine and Sabretooth, but with individual videos we can actually take a good look at Gambit, Wraith and Deadpool (speaking of whom, holy cow, Ryan Reynolds, all that working out seriously paid off).

I've included all five of the character videos after the jump, but I personally think the ones for Gambit, Deadpool and Wraith are by far the most interesting. To check 'em out,

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer Now Online!

Have you had enough of this year's sexiest man alive? Ha! Who am I kidding? The more Hugh Jackman, the better. Now we've got the official trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine that screened before The Day the Earth Stood Still over the weekend and it's pretty awesome. I've been psyched for this movie for a while (especially since I saw Jackman bound into the Comic-Con audience to personally thank Len Wein, the person credited with co-creating the character of Wolverine) and whether it's all the crazy action or the great X-Men story being told or the, you know, beautiful man at the heart of it - this trailer made my pulse race.

Comic-Con Surprise - Hugh Jackman Shows Up With Wolverine Footage!

Ho-ly smokes, people, this has been a ridiculously exciting day. More on the Max Payne and The Day the Earth Stood Still panels later - it's what immediately followed the Max Payne panel that is blowing my dome right now!

As soon as the panel was over, Hugh Jackman - looking freaking fine - appeared onstage and the crowd. Went. Wild. First off, as I said, he looked amazing. He's got some long-ish wavy locks, a lovely tan and distractingly shapely arms. Anyway, he started off (in his adorable Australian accent) thanking the fans of comic book movies, without whom, he thinks he would not have a career (ha!). Then, he bounded down the steps (amid super high-pitched screaming from attendees, many of whom have gotten to the hall early so they could get good seats for the Twilight panel later today) to shake the hand of Len Wein, the person credited with co-creating the character of Wolverine. It was a really inspiring moment, actually. Jackman leaned over a bunch of people and shook Wein's hand.

There was another little speech from Jackman about the next X-Men movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and then - roll footage! We were treated to a bunch of scenes from this Wolverine movie, which isn't due in theaters until May 9, 2009. But from what we saw - so far, so awesome. To find out some of the stuff I spotted,

As the title promises, we'll see the origin story of Wolverine, and to some extent, it seems, that of Sabretooth (played by an also-very-manly Liev Schreiber). We see Stryker, who's putting together "a special team" of superheroes, and from there we get glimpses at some of the other characters, including a great-looking Gambit, played by FNL's Taylor Kitsch. Toward the end of the montage, there are some brief, but cool-looking fight scenes between Wolverine and Sabretooth.

Surely this stuff will be online soon, but I'm kinda overcome with adrenaline right now - it was such a cool surprise!

Reynolds, will.i.am, Kitsch Join X-Men Origins Movie

Recently the first image from the next X-Men movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit the web, and now there's news of cast additions, including a Black Eyed Pea and a star of Friday Night Lights. will.i.am will make his film debut alongside Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Kitsch in Wolverine, directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition).

X-Men Origins will "reveal the origins of the Wolverine character and introduce other mutants not yet seen in the "X-Men" franchise." Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine himself. According to Variety, Kitsch will play Gambit, a "card-throwing character" that Fox and Marvel have wanted to add to the X-Men franchise for a long time.

will.i.am has the role of John Wraith, "a mutant who has the power to teleport, and is another test subject of the Weapon X program that created Wolverine and other mercenaries."

Reynolds is cast as Deadpool, "an assassin with self-healing powers." The studios have eyed this character "for some time with the idea of spinning off [Deadpool] into his own film series should the character prove popular among moviegoers." So . . . next up: X-Men Origins: Deadpool?

Buzz Time Machine: The Original X-Men Trailer

When X-Men: First Class debuts in theaters today, we'll meet the mutants as their younger selves in the 1960s. However, the onscreen mutants we know best are the ones that have appeared in the four previous movies, like Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. So before you hit the theater and meet the mutants decades ago, first go back to 2000 and meet them in the first X-Men movie. In the trailer below, you'll see Stewart as Professor X in all his bald glory, as well as Rebecca Romijn stealing the show as Mystique. Can't get enough? X-Men: First Class - A Prequel to the Rescue

In a Summer full of sequels, X-Men: First Class does more than live up to its franchise - it improves upon it. With a combination of great actors, a compelling story, and a fun, swingin' '60s setting, X-Men First Class is an entertaining blockbuster that doesn't sacrifice any substance for style. Technically a prequel rather than a sequel, First Class visits the universe of the X-Men before they came into their own as superheroes. James McAvoy is the young Charles Xavier, a new professor studying genetic mutation, with his own to boot: telepathy. Michael Fassbender plays Erik Lensherr, a man who witnessed the murder of his family during the Holocaust as a boy, and who has spent much of his adulthood tracking down and killing those responsible. At his disposal is his own mutation: the ability to attract and manipulate metal like a magnet, eventually earning the nickname Magneto.

When upstart CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) is monitoring suspicious businessman Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and his involvement with nuclear weaponry, she witnesses his alliance of mutant minions. Moira consults Charles for his mutant research, recruiting him to help in her investigation. Erik and Charles encounter each other while Erik is hunting Shaw, who happens to be the man who killed Erik's mother. Erik and Charles find that they have much in common and form a fast friendship. Though the plot is propelled forward by the pursuit of the villain Shaw, the real meat of the movie is in the origin story of the mutant characters and how they came to harness their powers as X-Men. It's an angle that breathes fresh new life into the series, and the clean slate is an opportunity that's not wasted by director and writer Matthew Vaughn. After four other movies, the X-Men franchise felt like it was losing a bit of its spark, especially after X-Men Origins: Wolverine failed to reignite it. Perhaps that film's focus on one character was too limiting, because First Class's breadth gives you enough to chew on to keep your attention. Introducing us to several key characters and giving us the entire mutant story is much more effective.

The shared backstory is absorbing; using an invention of brilliant young scientist Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), Charles and Erik locate several mutants, each in various states of bewilderment over their mutations. Most prominently, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) suffers from the angst of being unable to accept her true, blue shape-shifting form, Hank has been ridiculed for his animal-like feet, and Alex (Lucas Till) lives in fear of hurting people with his fiery gift. Along with a few others, the young outcasts form a community for the first time, and Charles establishes a school for them at his home, training each of them to take control of their particular abnormalities. Eventually, they find their way, and new monikers: Mystique, Beast, Havok, Banshee, and Professor X, to name a few.

Though the characters themselves are recognizable, the fresh faces playing them are newbies to the series, and most are new to the superhero genre itself. Fassbender, McAvoy, and Lawrence are each known for their dramatic performances, and the combined acting chops are a boon in an action movie. The only negative takeaway I had was that I wanted to spend more time with the characters in their development and bonding. The relationships (and potential romances) among the mutants are far more interesting than Shaw's plot to incite a third-world war, even if it is necessary to explain how Charles and Erik came to be on opposing sides.

First Class finds a balance of drama and action that keeps it from being a mindless popcorn flick, while still retaining the high energy of one. The tone varies admirably; the movie can be tragic at times, but it also has plenty of lighthearted moments to prevent it from being a totally dark, dramatic take on X-Men. Charles has an affection for chugging beer and hitting on women, and Raven's adolescence makes her an incorrigible flirt. Likewise, Fassbender breezes into each scene with charm as murderous as his mutant skills. As cheesy as it may be, the fantastic cast and story can be summed up by its title: first class.
