What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesdays are big in entertainment-ville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. Here are today's selections:

Psychedelic Beck: The buzz around Beck's new album, Modern Guilt, is really, really good, and he's just the sort of artist to give voice (and music) to some of the most troubling and complex issues of our time. At first listen, I get the feeling that the state of the world has Beck sincerely concerned - and, in his view, the future ain't so bright. Tracks like "Chemtrails" and "Youthless" are heavy, but I can't stop listening. It's all very trippy and retro, and I'll probably end up downloading the whole thing.

Get the party started: Yay! Even though Abba's greatest hits are available to us at any time, I'm excited to check out the movie soundtrack for Mamma Mia! and hear all the stars sing. Definitely give a listen to Meryl Streep singing the title track, "Mamma Mia." Also, Amanda Seyfried sounds amazing on songs like "I Have a Dream." I just cannot wait for July 18!

read more! Pretty folk songs: This Portland, Oregon duo is a sound for sore ears and a nice addition to my iTunes mix. Think Bright Eyes or the softer side of the Shins. Their album, 3 Rounds and a Sound, is lovely, and I've downloaded - and am enjoying - "The Story I Heard" and "One Red Thread."
When the greats get together: Back in January 2007, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis performed together at Lincoln Center, wowing crowds with their shared love of jazz and blues. Now, you can get the performance for yourself. I'm a sucker for old standards like "Georgia on My Mind," and Willie Nelson's voice coupled with this gorgeous jazz sound is a total treat.

Toby Keith Wrote a Song and Then a Movie: Beer for My Horses

You probably knew that Toby Keith was a country musician and songwriter, but did you realize that he writes movies, too? Well, apparently he does. His movie, currently in post-production, was just picked up by Roadside Attractions. Keith gave the film the same title as his song "Beer for My Horses" (sounds dangerous if you ask me), which extols the virtues of crime-fighting and righting injustices.

The movie version (which Keith wrote, produced and stars in) is a "road trip story" that "tracks two local deputies who defy the sheriff to save a girlfriend from drug lord kidnappers."

This won't be Toby Keith's first movie role, as he starred in the 2006 drama Broken Bridges (see production still above). Also, he and Willie Nelson did a little acting together in the video for "Beer for My Horses" which is pretty hilarious. You can watch that here and wonder along with me why there hasn't yet been a CSI: Country Style.

A little while ago, Pop spotted a bunch of famous Texans - Owen and Luke Wilson, Jessica Simpson, and even Dan Rather - racing lawn mowers at Willie Nelson's ranch while filming the video for Nelson's "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore." Well, now the video has arrived!

It's a cute, down-home country affair, with Jessica using her hot pink lawn mower (and matching helmet), crafty maneuvers, and some clever deception to prove who's really the best mower racer in all the land - much to the dismay of a sad-faced Owen. The First (But Not Last) Country Award Show This Week

Nashville gets a little more country this week starting with last night's Broadcast Music Inc. Country Awards. Jessica Simpson was out (in a kinda revealing dress) to help honor her friend Willie Nelson who received the night's Icon Award. Carrie Underwood and Sheryl Crow both went with black dresses, but neither of them were looking their best. Last night's event looks fun, but tonight's country music show should be even bigger - the CMA Awards are taking place in Nashville and obviously the country stars are already pouring into town. Stephen Colbert Confronts Willie Nelson Over Ice Cream

Willie Nelson appeared on The Colbert Report last night to discuss his new Ben & Jerry's flavor, Country Peach Cobbler. Seeing as how Stephen just got his own Americone Dream ice cream, he used the interview as an opportunity to confront his celebrity-dessert competition.

In case you missed it, Comedy Central has posted two highly entertaining clips. The first has Colbert calling out Nelson's nefarious agenda with an attack ad, in which an "ice cream expert" (read: little kid) asks: "Why would I want to eat ice cream the pot man told me to eat? Pot people are high. They'll eat anything."

Got the Munchies? Try Willie's New Ice Cream

Not to be outdone by Stephen Colbert, Willie Nelson now has his own flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, called Country Peach Cobbler. It sounds quite delicious and unlike any other Ben & Jerry's flavor I've tried: peach-flavored ice cream laced with cinnamon-sugar shortbread pieces. Plus, the packaging has Willie's face on it, which could provide hours of laughs. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Farm Aid.

You may have heard about the voluntary recall of 250,000 pints of Country Peach Cobbler, but no need to worry unless you are allergic to wheat. The ice cream is fine, but the packaging lacks an allergy warning. For details on how Ben & Jerry came up with the flavor,

In an interview with Ben & Jerry's spokesperson Sean Greenwood, Rolling Stone Rock & Roll Daily learned that the ice cream makers are far more likely to name a flavor after a musician with do-gooder tendencies. Though the article doesn't really explain whether Nelson approached Ben & Jerry's or vice versa, it does shed some light on the flavor selection:

Willie’s flavor took after the Southern style peach dessert because, according to Greenwood, “Willie is a downhome Texan Americana guy.” When they floated the peach idea by Mr. Nelson, his response was appropriately laid-back: “Groovy!” he reportedly drawled.

I'm going to see Willie Nelson during his five-night stint at the Fillmore in April, and you can bet I'll be picking up a pint or two of this stuff.

Chipotle's "Back to the Start" Spotlights New Sustainable Food Foundation

Chipotle's furthering its quest to create a more sustainable fast food system. Today the quickservice chain unveiled its new nonprofit organization, the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, to help support sustainable food practices. It's also debuted a short animated film, which will air prior to feature films in theaters nationwide.

The spot, titled "Back to the Start," is about a fictional farmer's venture into industrial farming practices and his eventual return to a more sustainable way of life. For the short, Chipotle commissioned Willie Nelson to sing Coldplay's "The Scientist." The cover song is available for download on iTunes, with proceeds going to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.

The new foundation plans to support organizations for family farms, food education for younger generations, and ranchers and farmers who are working on more sustainable practices. Chipotle will host a free music, art, and food day in Chicago called "Cultivate Chicago," with chefs Michael Chiarello, Richard Blais, Jonathan Waxman, and Amanda Freitag cooking and speaking. Similar events in other US cities will follow.

It's encouraging to see such a large food company setting an example for double bottom line investments; hopefully other fast food chains will take note and follow suit with similar social responsibility initiatives. Announcing the Winners of the 2011 Grammy Awards!

There goes another staple in award season - the Grammys are a wrap! The night was chock-full of performances from standouts like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, but there were a few statuettes passed out between songs.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy took the opportunity to thank his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend" Kate Hudson while accepting the trophy for best rock album, and Lady Gaga gave props to Whitney Houston in her acceptance speech for best pop album. Lady Antebellum scored big with five golden gramophones, but it was Arcade Fire that won the biggest award of the night, taking home the accolade for album of the year.
