Who Is Your Favorite Current SNL Cast Member?

Bid farewell to MacGruber: Will Forte has confirmed that he won't be returning to Saturday Night Live so that he can pursue other projects (though after seeing MacGruber, I'm not sure it's the best idea).

I'm sad to see Forte go, but his loss doesn't feel as devastating as, say, the departure of Kristen Wiig or Seth Meyers would be. Those two definitely help hold together the sometimes flailing show (Wiig as the strongest female in the cast, and Meyers as head of the Weekend Update desk). I also have a soft spot for Andy Samberg, who hasn't been as prevalent on the series as of late. Who is the SNL star you can't do without? Jason Sudeikis? Funny girl Jenny Slate? Do tell!

ESPYs Mix Bikini Babes, Sports, Starlets, SNL, and Efron in LA!

The sun was shining bright on the ESPY Awards yesterday afternoon as sports stars and actors alike hit the red carpet outside the Nokia Theater in LA. As usual, there were a good number of sexy ladies who mingled with the athletes, like Ashley Greene, who looked hot in red as she headed in to present with Tracy Morgan. Marisa Miller, who is cleaning up in the bikini bracket so far, stuck with a classic LBD on another break from her epic surfing adventure. Danica Patrick posed with Landon Donovan while Zac Efron sported dark sunglasses. He's out to promote Charlie St. Cloud, out July 30, in which his character is a baseball lover himself.

Seth Meyers played host for the evening, and during his opening monologue he rattled off a few jokes at the expense of Brett Favre and Tiger Woods, to name a few. Andy Samberg showed up as Paul the World Cup-predicting octopus, and Dinner for Schmucks stars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd poked fun at LeBron James's "The Decision" special. Zac got to present alongside Mad Men actress January Jones, and her onscreen ex Jon Hamm was lucky enough to pose with Brooklyn Decker backstage. Mark Wahlberg made a wisecrack about Emmanuelle Chriqui's Entourage this season, all in good spirits. It was another great night for honoring the year's athletic highlights with highlights and of course emotional montages - check out all the winners here.

Will Forte & Kristen Wiig on MacGruber and Sweaty Sex Scenes

OK, so I didn't quite love the MacGruber movie as much as I'd hoped, but that hasn't changed my opinions on the film's hilarious actors. We recently had the opportunity to chat with the funny leading stars, which means lots of talk about Ryan Phillippe's nakedness and the sex scene between Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. Here are more highlights from the junket:

Kristen on her favorite SNL movies: "Blues Brothers . . . That's an SNL movie right? I also really liked Superstar! There's funny stuff in all of them."
Will on how he'd defuse a bomb in real life: "I would take off running. I would try to talk to it nicely, 'Please, come on! Think about what you're doing!' And bombs don't usually respond to polite conversation. I am not a hero! I would be out of there."
Kristen on bad SNL ideas people pitch her: "My dad actually pitched a really bad one . . . It had something to do with wanting to order a hot dog in a fancy restaurant. I think that might have been the worst one! People don't usually come up with total new ideas, it's more like an idea for a character."
Kristen on her sex scene with Will: "Have you ever had anyone sweat on you? Like really drip sweat on you? It's not that fun. But it's Will, and as creepy as it sounds, he's kind of like my brother. So it made it not as bad, but it was a pretty sweaty day. It was pretty bad. We were on satin sheets that really don't absorb anything, they kind of just turn to paper. And we were laughing and we didn’t know what we were doing!"
Will on his sex scene with Kristen: "I felt bad for Kristen on that day that we did it because it was very hot in Albuquerque and this was a bedroom on the second floor of this house, and already I was sweating just walking to the bed and she was so covered in sweat by the end of this sex scene . . . I felt bad for her. Because it was her birthday, and nobody deserves that on any day."

Kristen on other SNL sketches being made into movies: "Well any of them really, except Gilly because she doesn't really talk!"
Kristen on her hidden talents: "I guess I sung on the show. I draw and I paint and stuff. That's what I'll fall back on in a few years when this all ends . . . Just kidding."
Will on the most humiliating thing he had to do for the movie: "You could pick about 20. I had to be naked and do something with a piece of celery that my mom will be haunted by for a long time - because she was on the set."
Will on writing the movie: "The writing process was really fun, but really grueling because we wrote it in about four and a half, or five weeks. And two of those weeks were SNL production weeks, which are on their own insane."

MacGruber: A Bomb That Needs Defusing

I am an unapologetic Saturday Night Live lover, in good times and bad, and that feeling extends to Will Forte and his MacGruber character. The MacGyver parody was so well-received that it's become a movie, MacGruber, out today, also starring Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig.

I wish I could say that studio brass made the right decision turning MacGruber into a full-length movie, but I can't. Whether it's the fact that the brief sketch just didn't have enough material for a 90-minute film or that it just wasn't given enough script or plot work, MacGruber feels like an exercise in misplaced energy.

To hear why I didn't love the movie, just

I'm a sucker for so-stupid-it's-funny humor, so I was expecting to like MacGruber more than I did. To be fair, there are quite a few chuckles in there - Wiig, particularly, can do no wrong in my eyes, and Forte brings everything he has to the part (and I do mean everything, if you've heard rumors of notorious scenes). In fact, the movie is funny enough, but the humor is drowned out by pretty much everything else.

Val Kilmer's villain schtick is tired before we even reach the big climax, and there's just too much violence to make sense in a comedy. I'm assuming someone just got really excited about having an R rating and ran with it, but the extremely graphic violence doesn't make it funnier in the least - it just makes it gross.

There's a nod to the actual MacGruber sketches in one of the final scenes, and it almost feels out of place. It's pretty much the only time the original vision of the lighthearted spoof is there, and by that point, it's unrecognizable.

Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, and Will Forte Get Some SNL Backup at MacGruber

The cast of MacGruber traded in their khaki wardrobe for formal wear at last night's premiere in NYC. Ryan Phillippe looked right at home with all the Saturday Night Live cast members, including Andy Samberg and Bill Hader, who came out to support Will Forte and Kristen Wiig's sketch-to-movie project. It was the second red carpet of the week for the crew, who are also celebrating the end of another successful SNL season. While on the East Coast, Ryan got to fulfill another fun obligation - on Tuesday he traveled south to Philadelphia to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a game for his beloved Phillies! He revealed he was pretty nervous before the throw, but perhaps not quite as much as when getting ready for his embarrassing, partially nude scene in the film.

James Franco Celebrates Saturday Night on Sunday Afternoon

James Franco stepped out yesterday to support his short documentary Saturday Night during the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. The piece, which already won awards at the SXSW Festival, is a behind-the-scenes look at the week leading up to hosting SNL, and stars from the show like Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, and Jenny Slate were there to attend the premiere with James. After the red carpet, James headed inside for a screening and a Q&A session where he said the goal of his piece was to find out "what that mysterious comedy process was." James's directorial effort was one of two projects he had playing at Tribeca, as he also starred in a movie created by one of his NYU professors called William Vincent.
