Which Movie Are You Interested In Seeing This Weekend?

There are some great movies out in theaters right now, like Zodiac and 300, and some others that have recently proven very popular (Norbit, Wild Hogs, Ghost Rider). Out of these options, which film would you most like to see this weekend?

300 Storms the Box Office

300 may not be a great movie - New York Times reviewer A.O. Scott called "about as violent as Apocalypto and twice as stupid" - but at least it's novel, which is more than I can say for Wild Hogs. So 300's triumph at the box office this weekend renews my faith in American moviegoers somewhat.

As reported in the Los Angeles Times, the comic book-inspired epic not only dominated the box office this weekend but also broke records for March opening-weekend ticket sales.

The $64 million production, which brings the ancient Battle of Thermopylae to the big screen, grossed a whopping $70 million in the U.S. It totally trounced Wild Hogs, which brought in $28 million, and in third place was Bridge to Terabithia with about $6.9 million. Sadly, I haven't gotten to see 300 yet, so if you did, tell me what you thought.

Anyone who would have the guts to brand themselves with their fave computer company's logo or HTML code baffles me. Here are just a few of the many examples where this is the case. For a closer look check out William H. Macy's rainbow colored Apple tatoo and the infamous lower back Apple tattoo. What are your thoughts? Wild Hogs Shows Some Apple Lovin'

The biker comedy Wild Hogs made a smash hit debut this past weekend, rolling in $39.7 million and moving it into the top spot at the box office. The film stars John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Tim Allen as biker buddies who decide to pack it up and take a big road trip together. This pic is from the beginning of the movie when they are talking about their trip and decide to destroy their cell phones so they have zero responsibilities. The 40-year-old virgin computer geek Dudley Frank arrives, played by William H. Macy, to show off his new tattoo.

Here's what the hilarious Dudley had to say about it:
Dudley- “I’m a biker, dude! I got a tat!”
Doug- “It’s an Apple…”
Dudley- “I know. Trademarked. But what are they gonna say? It’s in my skin b**ch!”

Wild Hogs = Weird Weekend at the Box Office

I know that it's a big-budget movie with lots of big-name actors that's spending a lot of money on TV ads, but really: Wild Hogs?!? Yes, the perplexing buddy-meets-biker movie with a "did I read that right?" cast - John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, Tim Allen, and William H. Macy - was No. 1 at the box office this weekend, bringing in $38 million in its first three days.

Zodiac, which I liked quite a lot, came in at No. 2. Since I basically ignored the very existence of Wild Hogs, I'm a bit startled that so many moviegoers - given a choice between this movie, 2007 Oscar winners, and even Black Snake Moan - a failed experiment but at least it's thought-provoking - thought, "Hey, that Wild Hogs movie looks pretty good."

Popwatch blogger Michael Slezak watched Wild Hogs so we don't have to, and it sounds truly woeful. In one scene, Tim Allen apparently chugs gravy and eats a stick of butter. Ew. Also, poor, poor Marisa Tomei. Let's watch the trailer again, then ponder: What, exactly, about this movie appeals to people?

Thousands of cookbooks were published in the last year, but which ones are really worth buying? The International Association of Culinary Professionals, or IACP, tackled the question as it announced its cookbook award finalists for 2012 today.

Among them: plenty of cookbooks from top restaurant chefs, like Jean-Georges Vongerichten, John Besh, and Andrew Carmellini, as well as new books from reputed publications such as Fine Cooking and Cook's Illustrated.

Why just go to a beach, when you can find one on an island? This week I’m giving suggestions of my favorite US islands that won’t break the bank. Some of these are your classic sun-and-swim spots, others are a bit more adventurous.

Florida’s “other coast” is really something special and Sanibel Island is our top getaway for our free itinerary give-away this week. With some 50 miles of accessible coastline, there’s a beach for everyone: from unspoiled ecosystems to fun seaside communities where you can order cocktails and go clubbing, or take in local art and even Thomas Edison’s summer home. The area has all the outdoor recreation you could dream of with mountain biking trails, kayaking opportunities, but also has great shopping, restaurants and nightlife. I visited last year and managed to squeeze in a couple kayak hours to see manatees and dolphins on the way to the airport.

Fire Island is well-known as a popular weekend getaway for New Yorkers but the real beauty of it lies in the east, where most villages are blissfully car-free. At night, you can walk among the boardwalks through the dunes that connect the houses or take advantage of water taxis to take you between villages. Hike the Sunken Garden and Otis Pike Wilderness Area or check out the views from the Fire Island Lighthouse. Try to go mid-week to snag the best rates.
