What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download.

She's baaack: I Look to You is supposed to be Whitney's comeback album, and "Million Dollar Bill" is the upbeat first single. It seems pretty disco-y and fun to me - like a radio-friendly hit - but it also feels like it was written for someone else. The same goes for "Like I Never Left," which features Akon; they're just kind of generic. The more "Whitney-ish" tracks are the ballads, particularly the title song "I Look to You." It's not a terrible album, it's just not the strong comeback I was hoping to get from the woman who belted out "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

Turn it up: Listening to The Black Crowes' latest album, Before the Frost . . . Until the Freeze, makes me regret not being more familiar with more than the band's singles, because this album is such a good time, particularly the rocking opener, Good Morning Captain. Songs like it and Shine Along make me want to see the band on tour, immediately, in some big, hot outdoor venue where dancing is mandatory. Crossing over: Actress Juliette Lewis has been singing with her band The Licks for a few years now, but she's going it all on her own with Terra Incognita. I'm impressed by this album, especially since I was always pretty ambivalent about her singing career. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta produced the album, which is super apparent in the heavy, mysterious-sounding tracks, but some of the songs (like "Ghosts") just sound like a Volta song with Lewis singing. But the title track, "Terra Incognita," is my favorite for its showcase of Lewis's pipes - snarling, but still melodic.

Are You Interested in Whitney Houston's Comeback Album?

The buzz around Whitney Houston's big comeback has been building for months now. The singer's fall from grace was sad and heartbreaking to witness, but apparently she's all cleaned up, has rid herself of ~~Bobby Brown~~ bad influences, and is ready to get back to what she once did very well: making hit records.

Her comeback album will officially be out on Sept. 1. She's counting down to the date on her website, and even has a comeback video up that I've included below. Does hearing her voice make you nostalgic? Are you interested in her upcoming album?

Could You See Rihanna in a Bodyguard Remake?

One of the latest rumors surrounding Rihanna is that she and Channing Tatum are in talks to star together in a remake of The Bodyguard. Of course, Rihanna would take on Whitney Houston's role as the singing star and Tatum would play Kevin Costner's role, the bodyguard. The movie would apparently be a "young and sexy take" on the original film.

Can you picture this? Do you want to? Could Rihanna pull off this role?

Do You Think Whitney Houston Can Make a Comeback?

Whitney Houston divorced Bobby Brown and has been parading around town with music mogul Clive Davis the last couple of months, so I've wondered if something like a comeback was a-brewin'. Whitney was once a beloved diva with a phenomenal voice, but then drugs and other problems began to sink her career.

Yet, now there's news of an album in the works, on track for a holiday-time release. Collaborating artists include will.i.am, Sean Garrett and Akon, who sounds all kinds of confident in her ability to generate hits again:

"The voice is there; I don't think anyone could ever take that from her. As long as we apply that voice to hit records, she'll be right back where she left off."

She's been out of it for so long, I wonder if she's still relevant. On the one hand, her older hits are still loved by a younger generation even though they've only known her to be a tragic figure. What do you think? Can Whitney Houston can top the charts again?

Announcing the Winners: 2009 American Music Awards

The American Music Awards show is over, and I've got your full list of who earned trophies. Following her big CMA wins, Taylor Swift dominated in the female categories, taking home AMAs for favorite artist in both pop and country categories as well as the top honor of them all: Artist of the Year.

Besides Ms. Swift, there were plenty of others who triumphed, like country act Gloriana, who pulled off a shocker of an upset with Breakthrough Artist over Lady Gaga. (Even Gloriana poked fun at the win, asking the audience to raise a show of hands if they didn't know who they are.) Michael Jackson won four posthumous honors, and his brother Jermaine took the stage with family members to accept on his behalf. I'll be going over all of the highlights from the show tomorrow - including some of my red carpet coverage and notes from the press room - so check back then! TV Tonight: The American Music Awards

This has been a huge year for music so far: Taylor Swift has won every trophy imaginable, Whitney Houston is staging her comeback, and Michael Jackson is still topping the charts, even after his death. Perhaps that's why tonight's American Music Awards sounds even better than in the past - and I'll be at the show to bring you all of the exciting moments!

Let's go over what to expect from the evening. First off, the performances. There are so many big-name acts I honestly can't choose which is my favorite. Janet Jackson is opening the first eight minutes, but The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Rihanna, and Carrie Underwood are taking the stage, too, among others. (I cannot wait to see what over-the-top spectacle Gaga has up her bedazzled sleeve!) As for the awards, everyone will be watching to see if Michael Jackson earns a posthumous statue; he's up for five categories, bested only by Taylor Swift who is in the running for six.
