Romantic comedies are the refreshing confections of the movie world - light, airy, and fun (and sometimes just a little bit cheesy). Whether you love them or loathe them, Hollywood cranked out more sweet stories of love with a touch of laughs this year, some a bit better than others. What 2010 romantic comedy is your favorite?

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Don't fret about there being nothing on TV when you can be catching up on movies! Get in on my Summer Netflix challenge or get your hands on one of this week's new DVD releases.

When in Rome

When in Rome is definitely one of those movies a romantic comedy lover won't be able to resist renting. No, it's not Oscar-winning material, but it is a cute, frothy slapstick confection that's fun enough. This is thanks to leads Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, who are united by the coins of a magic fountain that make men fall in love with Bell. Yes, I know how dumb that sounds, but I enjoyed the silly flick for its laughs and goofball cast, which also includes Will Arnett and Dax Shepard. The DVD extras include a blooper reel, deleted scenes, and two music videos.

Youth in Revolt

Michael Cera treads both familiar and unfamiliar character territory in his Youth in Revolt dual role. As awkward teen Nick Twisp and his suave altar ego Francois, Nick sets his sights on his dream girl, and Francois gets him in more trouble than Nick bargained for. It all makes for an irreverent, if uneven, adaptation of CD Payne's novels. Zach Galifianakis and Justin Long provide cameos in the comedy, which is worth seeing just to watch Cera leave his comfort zone by playing a mustachioed Casanova. Extras on the DVD include a commentary track, deleted scenes, and the actors' audition reels.

The Book of Eli Denzel Washington tackles a bleak, post-apocalyptic world in The Book of Eli, a quasi-religious action movie where chaos has taken over civilization and his nameless character must keep the last remaining bible safe. I didn't love this movie - it gets ridiculous and overly stylized where it could have been brought down to earth a little, but it still pulls off a fascinating twist ending. The DVD extras include some additional scenes. 47%

Box Office: Avatar Holds On For a Seventh Week

After passing Titanic last week as the highest grossing film of all time, Avatar continued to add to its box office tally over the weekend with a hefty $30 million. New films Edge of Darkness and When in Rome couldn't unseat James Cameron's phenomenon, as each took in a respective $17.1 million and $12 million for second and third place.

Rounding out the rest of the top five was Dwayne Johnson's kid comedy The Tooth Fairy with $10 million, and The Book of Eli with $8.7 million.

Now, the question remains: what film will finally take Avatar down?

When in Rome: A Mindless Escape

The formula for a typical romantic comedy is simple: you need two attractive actors and a plot that makes enough sense to keep the audience's attention. Everything else is a variable (friends, setting, dialogue), but those first two basics are what determine a rom-com's success. For When in Rome, the casting of Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel is a hit - but the plot, about a woman who unwittingly makes several men fall in love with her after stealing coins from a "fountain of love" - is a complete and utter miss.

Fortunately, it's not an altogether unpleasant experience - thanks to the naturally funny leads and supporting cast of Will Arnett, Dax Shepard, Jon Heder, and Danny DeVito (the poor saps in love with Bell's character, Beth), the movie is genuinely entertaining in parts. There are even laugh out loud moments . . . when the characters aren't talking about the "Fontana Di Amore."

read more. If Bell didn't have to pretend to take the superstitions and rules about the magic fountain so seriously, I could have enjoyed her first real outing as a leading lady much more. When her sister (Alexis Dziena) relays more information about the fountain and what Beth must do to "break" the spell, there were audible groans in my theater (but props to the actors for keeping straight faces. That must have been tough.) It's really a shame that the plot device is so dreadful, because Josh Duhamel and Bell are natural-born romantic comedy stars. Both gorgeous and adept at physical comedy, they make an ideal pair for a movie in this genre. The rest of the cast, especially Shepard as a self-loving male model, also elicits a surprising amount of humor (they do get some help from an awesome, unexpected cameo that I won't spoil here). There are other problems that bring down the movie besides its ridiculous central storyline, particularly an unnecessary final sequence that should have ended up on the cutting room floor. However, if you're looking for a good time and can set aside your expectations for a realistic experience at the movies, you'll probably find yourself guffawing despite yourself - and waiting to see Bell and Duhamel in more worthwhile roles.
