Courteney and David Stick Together at the Scream 4 Premiere With Neve, Adam, Emma, and More

The guys and girls of Scream 4 assembled in LA last night to premiere their latest installment in director Wes Craven's series. Courteney Cox and David Arquette put their divorce aside to pose on the carpet with their costar Neve Campbell, who has been busy making the interview rounds to support the project over the last few weeks. Both David and Courteney, who recently visited Disney with their 6-year-old daughter Coco, also have had their fair share of press to do, including a stop at the junket where he spoke about their meeting 15 years ago, and she talked about how scary Scream is. Their red carpet was jam-packed with their many costars, including newcomers like Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Anthony Anderson. News about another Scream installment has been filtering in for the last few months, and today Dimension has confirmed that Scream 4 is set for release in April 2011, with Wes Craven directing, Kevin Williamson writing, and much of the cast reprising their roles. John Legend and Isaac Hayes have joined the cast of the comedy Soul Men, which includes Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, writes Billboard.

Which '80s Horror Remake Is More Annoying?

I would guess that most of you don't approve of the news today that Michael Bay will be directing a new franchise of horror movies based on Wes Craven’s 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Coupled with the November news that Friday the 13th is being remade, it's all starting to get a little annoying.

So which of these '80s horror remakes bugs you the most?

"On the Lot": A Night of Weird Movies

Well, "On the Lot" just keeps those changes comin': This week, instead of making us wait till the end of the evening to see which of last week's directors would be kicked off, Adriana cut the suspense and just told us Marty was going home. Which means Kenny's still in, of course, but given that two of my least-favorite directors were in the same group, losing one was the best that could happen.

On to this week's films. The guest judge was Wes Craven (shouldn't they have saved him for horror film week?), who mainly served to make Adriana squeak and squeal at the mere thought of Scream. He wasn't my favorite guest judge of the season (that honor still goes to Michael Bay), but he seemed to take his task seriously and provided some good notes for the contestants. As for the films themselves:

Will started things off with Glass Eye, about a guy who loses his glass eye but figures out he can still see through it, which becomes interesting when his dog eats it. Will is so sweet, totally my sentimental favorite to win, and this movie made me smile, despite some slow pacing and a poo joke. Carrie said it was sweet, but Will should make a movie with dialogue next time. Wes thought it was good overall, though he would have changed a few specific things about the direction. Garry said he couldn't be sympathetic to the main character because if a guy wears a wifebeater, clearly he's a wife-beater. Thanks, Garry.
Jason went next, leading into his film by saying he's a Christian guy who just wants to make positive films. Like the ones making fun of the mentally challenged? Anyway, his movie this time around was Blood Born, about a troubled kid who finds out his blood can heal the terminally ill. It was full of saturated colors, tricksy visual effects, and heavy moralizing - and did anyone else hear the audience start laughing when the main character got a gun pulled on him? Ouch. Carrie and Wes said they both were unclear on what the lesson was supposed to be, and Garry said an uplifting ending might have worked better.

To see how the other three fared,

Zach said he wanted to do something without so many special effects this time, so he came out with Sunshine Girl, about a little girl who's afraid of the dark and decides to capture the sun, inadvertently plunging the rest of the world into darkness. It was technically beautiful and restrained, though I thought it was a little too Hallmark-card saccharine. Carrie said it wasn't as good as his other stuff, but she still liked it; Wes called Zach a true filmmaker; Garry rambled something about England.
Mateen made a film called Lost, and I'd love to tell you more about it, but I honestly stopped paying attention about halfway through, because I was about to fall asleep. Basically, it was one long dialogue scene between ex-lovers, where the woman revealed she'd gotten married just before the guy could propose. Carrie said the dialogue was good but Mateen should have given it a third act; Wes didn't understand the woman's motivations; Garry said it looked a little too much like a soap opera.
Jessica finished off the night with The Orchard, "a horror film from a tree's perspective." If that sounds like some wacky, experimental student-film nonsense to you, well, you're exactly right. Carrie said, and I quote: "That was my least favorite thing next to adolescence and being left by a man for a man." Wes said it would be great for an audience of trees, but it totally wouldn't fly with people. Garry said he wanted the tree to fight back.

All three judges picked Sunshine Girl as their favorite. For me, it was a close call between that one and Glass Eye. As for who I'd send home: Jessica, in a heartbeat. What about you? Scream 4: A Bloody, Funny, and Worthy Scre-Boot

You know the sound of that dreaded ringing phone; you're ready for it, but no matter how often you remind yourself that it's coming, there's just something about the start of the Scream movies that gets me every time. From that very moment, Scream 4 throws you right back into the beloved franchise with a fresh, updated take on a very familiar story. The original Scream opening scene with Drew Barrymore put the movie on the map, and once again the first sequence is everything you want - tongue-in-cheek, funny, and of course, very bloody. For that reason and others, this is perhaps the most similar to the first of all the sequels. Or, to quote the film, it really is more of a "scre-boot" than a "shreik-uel."

Director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson are both at the top of their games with Scream 4. For all the criticism Scream 3 received, Craven stays loyal to the essence of Scream in this one. Ghostface and his very shiny knife are chill-inducing, red-herring abound, and it's a horror movie about loving horror movies. Williamson somehow retains the ability to write snappy, believable teen dialogue, save one final monologue about fame that goes a bit over the top.

Technology plays a central role in the story, with iPhones, apps, and web cams making frequent appearances, which is certainly a sign of the times. Scream 4 will serve as a snapshot of 2011 in the same way Scream is so indicative of the late '90s, belly shirts and all. Still, I'm not sure there are any high schoolers out there live streaming their whole life from a headset.

To read my biggest gripe about the movie, how the veteran cast members do, and the bottom line of who will love this just

Woodsboro hasn't changed much in the past 10 years, and neither have Gale Weathers-Riley (Courteney Cox), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). The inclusion of the veterans is crucial to making Scream 4 work, and they remain the heart of the series. Gale and Dewey have stuck around town, and he's now the Sheriff while she's no longer working as a reporter and is instead plagued with a case of writer's block. Sidney is back in town on her book tour, with her a final stop being in her hometown on the anniversary of the Woodsboro Massacre. Her memoir is about coming out of the darkness, and her character has gotten stronger after all she's been through. Instead of running away from Ghostface, Sidney is now on the offensive to protect her cousin, Jill (Emma Roberts), and family. Campbell shines as a more daring adult Sid who is ready to fight until the end.

The death count is far higher than any of the previous Screams, so don't get too attached to the hot, young star-studded cast. For that reason, the downfall of this film is that it has less character and relationship development. At times it feels like the script moves from kill to kill without explaining any of the motives or backstory. There's little time to be worried about what door Ghostface is lurking behind, since the killer is too busy slashing everyone in sight. For instance, the movie alludes to Jill's boyfriend Trevor (Nico Tortorella) cheating on her, but they don't explain or expand on the story from there. The film will also have the viewers picking suspects, though that part of the story is underutilized as well. None of the characters are pointing fingers or making accusations, which is usually part of the fun.

Hayden Panettiere and Alison Brie are highlights of the new Scream-ers, as Jill's badass friend and Sydney's sassy publicist respectively, and the trio of guys, Tortorella, Erik Knudsen, and Rory Culkin each have their moments. Cox and Campbell, who both look like they haven't aged a day, are fantastic reprising their classic roles, and Arquette is lovable as ever as Dewey. Bottom line: Scream 4 won't have you jumping out of your seat, but it's smart, witty, unpredictable, and a blast to watch.
