Wes Anderson's Guide to Love

As a self-proclaimed Wes Anderson junkie, I was ecstatic to see his latest film Moonrise Kingdom this week. And considering I was either smiling or tearing up (or both) the entire 94 minutes, I'd say it was a hit. The camp-themed coming-of-age film has all the recognizable Wes Anderson-isms fans of the director love, and the young star-crossed lovers at the center of the sweet story really just melt your heart. Set in the '60s on a New England island, the film follows Suzy and Sam, troubled preteens who write love letters to each other before deciding to run away together. Wes Anderson's films always incorporate a romantic coupling, exes, or love triangle in them, and the characters involved are usually full of witty advice and observations on relationships. Moonrise Kingdom: A Retro Delight

Everything about Moonrise Kingdom is unmistakably Wes Anderson: the hazy cinematography, the clever dialogue, and even the use of the director's favorite actors. Indeed, Anderson isn't leaving his comfort zone as a filmmaker, but Moonrise Kingdom is still a pleasure to watch. Set in 1965, the movie tells the story of Sam and Suzy (newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), preteen pen pals who conspire to run away together. As they set up camp all over an island off the coast of New England, they're being pursued by Sam's scout troop (led by camp counselor Edward Norton), Suzy's parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand), and different authorities (Bruce Willis and Tilda Swinton). Sam and Suzy's experience with young love is sweet and complicated, and made all the more dreamy through Anderson's lens.

The elements might be familiar, but Anderson proves why he's such an admired director with a film like this. It's surprisingly romantic, but there's also a real threat to Sam and Suzy in the wild. Their compelling journey paired with the optical treat of Anderson's style makes Moonrise Kingdom a must-watch for fans of the distinctive director. Ed Norton, Wes Anderson, and Tilda Swinton Kick Off Cannes!

The Cannes Film Festival is officially underway! This evening's Moonrise Kingdom will be the first premiere of the week and the cast got together earlier this morning for their photocall. Wes Anderson was surrounded by his cast, including Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, and Ed Norton. The movie actually centers around a love story between two young actors, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, who were also on hand for the event.

Much of this crew is like family already, since they've worked together on so many of Wes's movies, and they certainly looked excited to show off their new project in this gorgeous setting. Ever since we heard Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola were teaming up to write a screenplay, we've been patiently waiting for the trailer to present itself. Today, we finally got a taste of what Moonrise Kingdom has in store. And although it's live-action flick, Anderson's latest feels a lot more like Fantastic Mr. Fox than The Royal Tenenbaums. Set in a dreamy 1960s haze, 12-year-olds Suzy and Sam fall in love and plot to run away together deep into the New England forest. (This should prove to be no issue since Sam is a Khaki Scout, and his troop leader is Edward Norton.)

In true Wes Anderson fashion, there's an all-star cast with the usual suspects like Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray, along with some new names like Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, and Frances McDormand. Gwyneth Paltrow took the stage at the New York Film Festival for a special event honoring the 10-year anniversary of The Royal Tenenbaums. In the movie, Gwyneth memorably played the kooky character Margot - and on every Oct. 31 since 2001, there have been plenty of people dressed up in Margot Tenenbaum costumes! Gwyneth joined costars Bill Murray and Anjelica Huston for pictures and a Q&A session with director Wes Anderson as well as co-writer Noah Baumbach. She tweeted a photo from the event, captioning it, "Leaving a special 10th anniversary screening of The Royal Tenenbaums at the NY film festival. I can't believe I'm Margot." The evening of reminiscence came for Gwyneth during a break from her latest Big Apple project. Gwyneth's filming Thanks For Sharing with Mark Ruffalo, and work on that project has taken them from Central Park to Brooklyn and Harlem.

Wes Anderson Lines Up Starry Cast For Moon Rise Kingdom

Get ready for another film from the loopy mind of Wes Anderson! The writer/director is at work on his next project Moon Rise Kingdom, and he's attracting the likes of Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and old favorite Bill Murray.

Set in the 1960s, Moon Rise Kingdom centers on young paramours who run away together and the aftermath of their disappearance. Willis is in talks to play the local sheriff who is having an affair with the girl's mother (McDormand); Murray will play the girl's father. As for Norton, he's a scout leader who enlists his troop to search for the couple. No word yet on Swinton's role, though I'm sure it'll be just as delightfully oddball as the rest of them. Although I loved last year's stop-motion Fantastic Mr. Fox, I'm pleased as punch to see Anderson direct actors again. The real question is: who will play the young couple in question?

Johnny and Anne's Alice Afterparty Includes an Avril and Deryck Reunion!

Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway hit the red carpet in London last night for their Royal World Premiere, and they kept the good times going with an afterparty at the Sanderson Hotel. Their director Tim Burton took advantage of the chance to let loose with his longtime love Helena Bonham Carter and their son Billy, who looked adorable in his Stella McCartney for GapKids jacket. Johnny, meanwhile, kept company with Wes Anderson and Terry Gilliam, while Anne stayed close to boyfriend Adam Shulman. Avril Lavigne even joined in on the celebration since she contributed to the film's soundtrack. She left with Deryck Whibley, looking very on again despite the fact that she filed for divorce in October.
