Music Video: Coldplay, "Violet Hill"

Coldplay says its upcoming album, Viva La Vida, is taking the band in a new direction. But judging by this video, Coldplay may just be realizing its destiny as the more indie-rock and (refreshingly) less earnest equivalent to U2. I mean that in the best possibly way, because I have a serious Coldplay weakness, and I appreciate that the band takes itself seriously but not too seriously. This '70s-inspired, military-outfitted video for "Violet Hill" - full of faded architecture and landscape porn - could easily be pretentious in another band's hands. But Chris Martin (looking good, I must say) and Co. add enough cheekiness to make it endearing. To watch,

Extra! Extra! Get Your New Coldplay Here!

We're still nearly two months away from when Coldplay's fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, drops (June 17 in the United States), but today, the band is throwing fans a bone by releasing a song from the album to download for one week only. The song is called "Violet Hill" and is the eighth track on the album that is supposedly taking the band in a new creative direction.

In addition to the early download today, the band will also play two free shows in support of the new album, one in London and one at Madison Square Garden in New York City. A few details about the London show are on the band's site now.

To grab your own copy of the song, go here and fill out a short form that asks for your Zip code and e-mail address. The site will then e-mail you directions for downloading the song. A lot of people must be doing this, so beware that it could take a while for you to get the e-mail - mine took more than three hours!

The song definitely hints at a new, somewhat harder sound for Coldplay, but it also doesn't feel that out of step with the material they've released before. Now I'm curious to see if the full album will live up to the hype - not to mention the commercial success they've experienced thus far.

Jennifer Garner was dressed up as she left an office building in Beverly Hills yesterday. She had a smile on her face during the solo outing, which comes amidst a busy Summer of hanging with her daughters. Jennifer has been out and about with Violet and Seraphina enjoying the warm season with shopping trips and museum visits. Her husband, Ben Affleck, has also joined time with his girls in LA when he hasn't been hard at work on his latest project, Argo. Jennifer has her own two new releases coming up including Butter, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, and The Odd Life of Timothy Green. The fantastical movie won't be released until 2012, though we did get to see the first The Odd Life of Timothy Green trailer earlier this week.

Ben Affleck put his poker skills to the test at Saturday's Playing For Good charity event in Beverly Hills. The fundraiser, which was sponsored by Las Vegas's Tropicana hotel, also drew celebs like Paul Rudd and Nigel Lythgoe to the tables. Ben is back home after making a quick trip to Paris a couple of weeks ago and has been hanging out with his girls, Jennifer, Seraphina, and Violet, lately as he preps to direct his upcoming project Argo. The film took him to Turkey to scout locations in April, but he was sure to head back to LA just in time for Mother's Day. Ben chose to focus on his work behind the camera instead of accepting a role in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. Fans will still get a chance to see Ben on screen in an untitled Terrence Malick project that also stars Rachel McAdams. The already-completed movie's attracting plenty of buzz, especially now that Malick's The Tree of Life won the Palme d'Or, the Cannes Film Festival's highest honor, over the weekend.
