Kate Winslet Talks Sex Scenes, Raising Sophisticated City Kids, and Oscar Pride in V

Kate Winslet covers the new V magazine, which is out on newsstands today. It's the publication's heroes issue, featuring photos shot by Mario Testino and styled by Carine Roitfeld. Kate channeled her own personal style icon, Elizabeth Taylor, and spoke about how they're similar. The Contagion star, who skipped last night's NYC premiere with Matt Damon, also touched on her children growing up in the city, the awkwardness of sex scenes, and her hopes for more challenging roles in the future.

On her similarities to Elizabeth: "She was very strong in her head and in her heart, not just in the exterior and I suppose I am. To me she hid vulnerability pretty successfully, and I do that too. We all have vulnerable sides. I think for a long time I pretended I didn't have one, and I definitely do. The last couple of years I really had to pay attention to that. The great thing about acting is that you can fling it all into the mix of the part."
On going naked for movies: "I hate it! Listen make no mistake, I just get on it. I just go in and say 'Oh f*ck let's do it.' and Boom. If you complain about it or procrastinate, it's not going to go away. It's a profoundly bizarre thing to do. As actors you talk about it all the time. You can literally be tangled in sheets, and you turn to the other actor and say 'What the f*ck are we doing?' Dear Mum, at work today I had so-and-so's left nut sack pressed against my cheek. It's sort of unethical if you think about it in those terms."
On raising kids in a city: "I like being in the city. I like the diversity that my children are exposed to every day. I love the way their brains work. Joe turns to me the other day and says 'One day I will have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, darling. Which would you prefer?' And I said 'My Love, that would be entirely up to you, and it doesn't make any difference to me.' But that he knows! It's a real privilege. Talk about the best education."
On her future work: "I hope I am sh*tting myself over the characters I play for the rest of my life. Because the day I go 'Oh yeah, that's going to be a piece of pie', why f*cking bother? If you do that, you do not learn. I hope I'm always learning something. So I won an Oscar. It's amazing. I've got that for the rest of my life for a performance I am proud of. It nearly killed me. I am really proud of the film. That's it, moving on."

ABC Cancels Brothers & Sisters and Five More; Happy Endings Renewed

Upfronts news continues to roll in, and now we have some big updates about ABC's fall lineup. First, the bad news: ABC has canceled V, Brothers & Sisters, No Ordinary Family, Off the Map, Mr. Sunshine, and Detroit 187. With the exception of Brothers & Sisters and V, the casualties were all within their first seasons.

And now, the good news: Happy Endings has been renewed! The midseason show just got its start in April, but it's gained a decent amount of fans and ratings and will be back for a second season. In addition, Body of Proof has also just been renewed.

Which Endangered TV Show Would You Save?

It's a nerve-wracking time of year for TV fans, as we wait to hear news on whether our beloved series have been renewed for another season, or that other scary fate: canceled. While we can breathe a sigh of relief for shows that were recently granted a new season (like most of the NBC comedies and Fringe), there are still a few shows that are on the bubble, meaning their survival is uncertain.

Among the series that haven't been renewed yet are my favorites Chuck, One Tree Hill, and Parenthood, and I'm getting nervous. It's looking bleak for certain shows, so I've listed out a few of the series that haven't been picked up yet so you can vote. Tell me which of these not-yet-renewed TV series you'd save if you could!

Which Returning Midseason Show Are You Most Excited About?

We've been getting you acquainted with some of the first new shows of 2011 thanks to our handy pilot scoops and midseason preview guide, but let's not forget about our returning favorites as well. Just this week we've been treated to Winter premieres of Greek, Pretty Little Liars, and V, and there's plenty more where that came from. I'm particularly psyched for this Sunday's return of Californication, and of course, my beloved Parks and Recreation. Just watch the preview below and I dare you not to feel giddy with anticipation.

Of course, I'm also looking forward to the brand new American Idol and the final season of Big Love. What about you - which returning show are you most excited about?

Scott Wolf Talks V, True Blood, and His Peeps on Jersey Shore

The wait is over! ABC's V returns tonight, picking up where it left off last May. To recap: the sky is red, Anna's angry, and Erica has destroyed the alien eggs. And then there's Chad Decker (AKA former Party of Five heartthrob Scott Wolf), the smarmy newsman who is Anna's henchman - until he realizes the horrific things she's done. Now that he's realized Anna's evil nature, will he switch sides?

A few months ago, I went on location to the Vancouver set of V, as the stars filmed the season two premiere, "Red Rain." Between takes, Scott Wolf sat down to chat about what's to come for Chad and the show. He admits that the series got off to a rocky start last year, but assures us that it's picking up steam. Read on, as he teases the new season, gabs about his new TV obsession, and shares his dream TV dad.

How's the second season so far?
Scott Wolf: It's so good to be back - so much better than the alternative! I don't think it's any secret that we had our bumps in the road last year, and I think any first year series probably experiences some of that. It's a huge show with a giant cast, an epic story, and a big mythology, so I think having everyone on the same page was difficult last year. This year, it's completely different. It just feels like they've used the time to figure out all the things that they may not have figured out before.

What can we expect to happen to Chad in the coming episodes?
SW: In the very first episode, in the season premiere, we see Chad for the first time truly declare his allegiance to one side.

Were you expecting for him to choose the way he did?
SW: No, it doesn't come as a huge surprise. But what is the most fun about the position he's in, is he's in the middle and has access to both . . . what I can say is, it takes a minute before we see Chad and Anna in the same room again, and a lot changes between the last time they saw each other and this time, so I'm interested to see what their dynamic is, moving forward.

We said goodbye to one of our favorite TV series this year (RIP, beloved Lost), but luckily, there are several remaining shows to satiate your sci-fi hunger, including some newbies (The Walking Dead, anyone?). The ones below gave us thrills and chills and admittedly made our heads hurt a little in 2010. Tell us which you enjoyed most!

Chuck's in, FlashForward's Out! Who Else Is in Danger?

The Fall TV season is finally getting fleshed out, as word is rolling in about which of your favorite shows will be coming back - and which we can give a fond farewell. In today's most recent hirings and firings, Chuck is saved! I'm so glad I continued to watch this beloved show despite it being on the bubble (I guess NBC really listened to the fans!).

But in sadder news, the original Law & Order is finally being laid to rest after 20 years on the air. In its place, NBC is reportedly picking up a West Coast version of the show, Law & Order: Los Angeles. Over at ABC, FlashForward has been canceled after being on the rocks, but V is still in.

UPDATE: NBC's Heroes has been officially canceled.

Scarlett Johansson Tells V She Feels Like a Woman Now

Scarlett Johansson struck a few poses for the upcoming issue of V, which is on newsstands next Tuesday. She opened up in the accompanying interview about her character in her Summer blockbuster Iron Man 2, which opens today - Buzz's review says it's a lot of fun! She also touched on maturing in her career and how she transforms from her everyday, gym-going self to being red carpet ready. Scarlett said:

On her Black Widow character in Iron Man 2: "It’s not that she’s non-feeling, she just gets the job done. She’s part of something bigger, and she knows it. She’s this crazy badass, and she has no time for f-cking around."
On what it takes to make her look like a movie star: "It’s all in a day’s work for me. Working with these incredible hair and makeup teams, you go in looking like a schmoe, and you come out like a movie star. You go through the works, and then you’re like this perfectly prepared sausage . . . no one ever sees what goes in."
On feeling like a grownup: "I’m 25, and for some time I’ve played these characters who are kind of figuring it out, transforming from young girls to young women . . . I don’t feel like a girl anymore. And I feel like my life and career are on a different path than they had been. There’s a lot of road behind me. I feel at this point I really want to do work that is challenging to me. Not to say that I don’t look at my job and realize that I’m ridiculously fortunate, and purely an actor for hire. You never forget that it’s all so vulnerable."

Do You Stay Loyal to Sci Fi TV Through a Mid-Season Break?

Things are not looking too good for sci fi on the prime-time front: Lost is in its last season, and three shows - Fringe, FlashForward, and V - are suffering from low ratings. Being a fan of these shows, I am pretty bummed, especially since each one of them (with the exception of Lost) was subjected to the doomed mid-season break and returned to at least 15 percent - if not 50 percent - less viewership. Everyone loves a cliffhanger but not when it's a relatively new show, and especially not after airing only four to eight episodes of it. Add to that the intricate plot lines that often make up sci fi shows, and people can't be bothered to remember what was going on - especially after a four month hiatus! Many still blame a mid-season break for diminishing the splendor that was once Heroes. Talk about a momentum killer.

The good news: Fox believes in Fringe enough to renew it for a third season. The bad: things are looking pretty grim for FlashForward and V. The wait and see: Caprica just had its mid-season finale, so now we play the waiting game to see what Syfy will do with it once it returns in October! I am definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a little sci fi prime-time fix - how about you?
