Marvel at the Teaser Trailer for Alice in Wonderland

Sure, the pictures were great- but they can't compare with finally seeing Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in motion. Today brings us the first teaser trailer, and it's such a delight to finally see Burton's mystical take on Alice coming to life. This saturated, stylized take seems a far cry from the fairytale-like TV movie I remember watching as a kid.

As the Mad Hatter, Johnny Depp gives this teaser an appropriately creepy voiceover as we watch Alice (Mia Wasikowska) tumble down the rabbit hole and end up in a magical fantasy world where potions make you shrink, green-eyed cheshire cats grin hauntingly, and impatient rabbits keep time on a ticking pocket watch.

The movie also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Alan Rickman. This is one movie I definitely can't wait to see on the big screen. If you feel the same, mark your calendars for a very important date: March 5, 2010.

New Images From Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland!

Expectations are high for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie and from the new pictures today, it looks like Burton will not disappoint. Vibrantly colorful and whimsical, the images show us how Burton has imagined the Mad Hatter (played by Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). These pictures are very, very cool. I cannot wait to see more!

Of Course Tim Burton Will Have a MoMA Exhibit - He's Brilliant

I'm thinking of taking a trip to New York in late November - not for Thanksgiving or to visit my relatives and friends, but for the Tim Burton exhibit that will open at the Museum of Modern Art on Nov. 22. The exhibit will feature "more than 700 pieces: paintings, drawings, storyboards, maquettes, puppets and other work created or designed by Burton." I think Burton is a brilliant artist; I love that he so often creates a tone that's at once beautiful, sinister, funny, and sometimes rather touching. In my excitement over this future Burtonist pilgrimage, I've gathered together stills from some of Burton's most admirable works.

Bonham Carter and Hathaway Join Burton's Wonderland

Well, I've been expecting this news ever since the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland project was announced: Helena Bonham Carter will star as the Red Queen in Burton's fantastical tale. The surprising part (but not in a bad way) is the other new addition to the cast: Anne Hathaway. The Hollywood Reporter includes these details:

Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, "Off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.

Of course Helena Bonham Carter fits right into this project, and I think the Hathaway choice is something of a pleasant surprise. What do you think?

In addition to these two queens, we've got our Alice (Mia Wasikowska), a Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and one man to play both Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I wonder who's next?

Johnny Depp to Play Mad Hatter in Burton's Wonderland

Disney has formally announced today that the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie will be played by Johnny Depp (of course!). The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop:

Depp and Burton. . . have formed one of the longest-running director-actor partnerships in modern Hollywood. And so when Burton committed to filming a new live-action/CG version of Alice, Depp was touted as the most likely candidate to play the Mad Hatter - after all, having worked with Burton on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he's practiced in wearing a top hat.

We also have a Tweedledee and Tweedledum - er, we have a Tweedle. Matt Lucas will play both Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

The Johnny Depp news is no surprise, really, but it's exciting to know that it's a done deal! I wonder if the next announcement will be that Helena Bonham Carter is the Queen of Hearts?

The Search Is Over: Tim Burton Chooses His Alice!

Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is the lucky girl who will portray Alice in Tim Burton's upcoming film for Disney, Alice in Wonderland. You may not recognize Mia right away but she's not a complete unknown either: She's been steadily making a name for herself, working opposite big names on both television and in the movies.

Mia is a series regular on HBO's In Treatment, will appear in the drama Defiance starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber, and will play the young Amelia Earhart in Amelia starring Hilary Swank.

Rumors have been swirling as to which young actress would nab the coveted role and you guys even threw in your own suggestions. I've heard great things about her from fans of In Treatment, but what do you think? Have you ever seen her on the HBO show? Does she look like the kind of quirky, cute Alice that might be good in a Tim Burton project?

Who Could Play Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland?

I can't wait to see what comes out of Tim Burton's imagination when he applies it to the classic Alice in Wonderland story with his live-action/motion-capture (like the Beowulf animation, plus live actors) adaptation. But of course, even with Burton's creative genius, casting is still (almost) everything. So who could play the innocent young Alice who goes on such a trippy adventure?

Rumor has it a virtually unknown 23-year-old actress named Ryan Nikole Parker will take the role - though apparently Evan Rachel Wood was initially supposed to have it and she backed out.

Perhaps a fresh face will be perfect for this part, so there are no preconceived notions about what our new Alice will be like. But if you had your druthers, who could you see playing a Tim Burton-y Alice?

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp Reportedy Team Up for Dark Shadows Movie

Rumor has it today that we'll be getting more spooky, dark delight from the brilliantly talented duo Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Depp is reportedly producing and possibly starring as Barnabas Collins in a film adaptation of the 1960s "daytime supernatural soap opera" Dark Shadows. Tim Burton is attached to direct and screenwriter John August (a frequent Burton collaborator) will be brought in to write the script.

So far, the basic IMDB description of the movie version is this: "A gothic-horror tale centering on the life of vampire Barnabas Collins and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts."

I can't wait to hear more about the plot and find out which role Helena Bonham Carter will play! I just love these guys.

Oscar Nominee: Sweeney Todd for Costumes

In the days leading up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. This week, I'll be looking at the nominees for Best Costume Design. We've already taken a look at the costumes in Across the Universe, Atonement and La Vie en Rose. Today I'm highlighting the costumes in Sweeney Todd.

Veteran costume designer Colleen Atwood has already won a Costume Designers Guild award for her work outfitting the stars of Sweeney Todd, so things are looking good for this Oscar nominee. The drab woolen fabrics of many of the clothes contrast starkly with the dashes of bright color, especially, of course, the garish red blood. The palette of mostly muted grays, mustard yellows and browns helps to paint this grim world, with splotches of brilliant blues appearing with the showy character of competing barber Signor Adolfo Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen) and the sweet Johanna (Jayne Wisener) draped in pale, innocent hues. Overall, the costumes do well to transport us back to this dark old London where treacherous things happen in barber shops and beneath pie stores.

Oscar Nominee: Sweeney Todd for Art Direction

In the days leading up to the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. This week, I've been looking at the nominees for Best Art Direction, which encompasses the entire look and feel of a film from the scenery to the lighting. Check out my galleries of production stills from Ridley Scott's darkly evocative American Gangster, the lovely Atonement and the fantastical world portrayed in The Golden Compass. Today I'm turning my sights to Sweeney Todd.

As I mentioned in my review of Sweeney Todd, the visual aspects of this film are largely why I liked it so very much. Tim Burton has a way with dark whimsy and Sweeney Todd is no exception. Burton's sinister, ominous-looking London is depicted in drab hues of browns and grays - all the better backdrop for the gallons of brilliant red blood that gush from Sweeney Todd's victims. By contrast, Mrs. Lovett's cartoonish and candy-colored dream sequence in which she entertains fantasies of marrying Todd and living "by the sea" are jarringly, ludicrously bright and hopeful.

Though I like all the nominees in this category, I must admit I have a soft spot in my heart for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd.
