Movie News Roundup: Stephen King, Kevin Spacey, Sam Raimi Get Busy

Lots of intriguing movie news coming out of Hollywood today:

Kevin Spacey will star in the indie film Shrink as a depressed therapist who likes to ah, partake of the ganja. (A pot-smoking therapist? That sounds familiar.) His clients in the movie will include "Hollywood characters" like Robin Williams, Keke Palmer, Laura Ramsey and Gore Vidal, among others.
Columbia and Sam Raimi will team up together again after their Spider-Man ventures for yet another adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel. Lehane's books make excellent screenplays, apparently, as Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and the upcoming DiCaprio-Scorsese project Shutter Island have all been adapted. Next up, Raimi will direct a film version of The Given Day, which follows Boston cops in 1919.
Speaking of adaptations, the rights to an as-yet-unpublished Stephen King novella Throttle - which he wrote with his son Joe Hill - have already been optioned. The story is about "father-son members of a motorcycle gang that's chased through the desert by an 18-wheel tanker truck." The novella will be a part of a 2009 anthology dedicated to I Am Legend author Richard Matheson.

Look of the Day: Ladylike Luxe

The other night I went to a friend's for dinner and a screening of My Week With Marilyn. In honor of the film (and Ms. Monroe), my gal pal, Whitney, showed up with a beautiful cherry lip (Guerlain's #529) and matching nails (Sephora by OPI's And a Cherry on Top). Keep in mind, Whitney is a neutral/pinky gloss girl.

Seeing her with scarlet lips was striking and felt totally fresh. She looked so great that I found myself asking why she doesn't do it more often. Whit's reply: "It's not special if you do it all the time." So true, and on closer inspection I noticed both her lip and nail color had a touch of gold. How very smart of her, as gold softens. A red lipstick may seem very thick and garish, but with a tinge of gold it seems to have more depth and feel very wearable. Every woman has a bright shade that will make her look sensational. Lap of Luxury: Fall's Velvety Trend

Velvet has long been associated with nobility and elegance, and this Fall, the oh-so noble fabric has made a serious comeback with some much-needed, updated charm. All over the showrooms, warmer Autumnal colors and rich jewel-toned shades provide perfect hues for the velvet trend.

I adore the bright pops of velvety orange that The Penelope Chair ($1,300) from Jayson Home brings to the table. If you're looking to incorporate velvet in an even more unexpected way, consider a modern lighting option like this Fiona Chandelier ($300) from Cindy Crawford Home.

Maybe you're not prepared to jump on the velvet bandwagon full throttle, but you'd be willing to test out a look or two in your home. I'm currently loving these retro and romantic Parlor Curtains ($150-210) from Anthropologie. The sandy color of these heavy curtains makes them a pretty funky treat for your windows. House Tour: Carole and Sean's Artsy Houston Warehouse

Artist Carole Smith, her husband Sean Flournoy and their four kitty friends live in a fun, colorful warehouse in Houston, TX. Carole, who hails from Scotland, runs McCheek’s Academy, where she teaches children and adults ceramics. She also sells her cool ceramics under the name McCheek’s Mayhem. Next door to their house, Sean runs Throttle Tees out of a warehouse where Carole has her kiln and ceramics studio.

Carole says," We have lived in our house for six years and have ideas all the time about making improvements, but it's fairly slow going, it’s a work in progress. We are both into making things and arts and crafts, so there is always something going on, and not always time to work on renovations. Ian Somerhalder Talks About The Vampire Diaries' Season Three and Says There's "A Lot of Me in Damon"

Vampires took over Comic-Con this year, and one of the biggest bloodsucker attractions was the CW's series The Vampire Diaries. We checked out the panel and also had caught up with Ian Somerhalder, who plays so-bad-he's-good vampire Damon. Somerhalder talked about where Damon's head will be when season three comes back, and what his relationship with Elena will be like.

Is Damon going to change after his near-death kiss with Elena?
Ian Somerhalder: Probably not. People keep talking about this steamy kiss, and I don't know if anyone was paying attention, but Damon was pale, bleeding, and sweating profusely. So I'm not exactly sure how passionate it was, but he definitely remembers it. And I think that ultimately, he's pretty pissed off. For two seasons, he tried to get his brother to be what he wanted him to be, to just eat and destroy everything in their paths, which would have been fun . . . to sort of be who he really is. So he tried that for two seasons, [and] now Stefan's running around with Klaus - a dude that Damon absolutely hates [because] he tried to kill him - doing all those fun things he was trying to get his brother to do. And now not only that, Damon's stuck in Mystic Falls with this girl that he loves [who's] 150 years younger than he is, who a) doesn't want him and b) it's his brother's girl, so he ultimately can't just do that. I think he's really not happy with the way things have turned out.

How will he behave with Stefan gone?
IS: I think he's going to rise to the occasion, and I think he's going to have fun doing whatever it is. I mean, this is the guy that, whether he's ripping someone's head off or saving a kitten, he has the exact same grin on his face. He feels the same way about either one of those things. It's the thing that we were doing in season one, which is that push-pull, you know. It's like the alcoholic in the bar, how difficult that is. These guys are natural killers, that's what they do. If you put a mouse or a cricket in front of a kitten or cat, they're not going to just watch it, they're going to play with it. It's built in to the framework of their being. I think that push-pull is really what makes dynamic storytelling. Stefan has that push-pull with Klaus. He tried to save his brother, yet ultimately he's compelled and he's going along with the whole thing. Damon has the push-pull of wanting to destroy everything in his path and needing to protect this girl that he loves, and Elena has the push-pull of many things, poor thing - she's being pulled from every limb. But she gets something from Damon that she doesn't get from Stefan. They laugh, they throttle each other, they bicker. There's actually a line in the next episode where Alaric even says, "What are you guys, 12?" Because they have this kind of cute banter thing happening, and I think it's cool. We're going to start seeing these different sides to these different characters, but if people are expecting Damon to be this wearing-his-heart-on-his-sleeve hero character - ain't happening.

read more. With Stefan out of the picture, how long will it take for Damon to put the moves on Elena? IS: That's a question I don't know the answer to. I think it's another fight - it's another push-pull for Damon. He doesn't feel very good about that. I think he's going to do what he's done in every other season. He's trying to distract himself, placate himself, so he's not firing on all pistons heading toward Elena. So there are lines he won't cross? IS: I don't know if there's any line he won't cross, but if he crosses them, he'll probably step back over. When you read Kevin Williamson's dialogue for Damon and his great one-liners, do you crack up? IS: I do. I truly love that man. He and Julie [Plec], I am so eternally grateful and in debt to. Unfortunately - those are the last two people you want to be in debt to, because they're crazy wicked smart and manipulative and wonderful. But Kevin has this thing where he writes so well for Damon, because I think in many respects - ixnay on the maniacal killer aspect - but there's a lot of Kevin in Damon. There's a lot of me in Damon. We just have a really profound relationship, and he just has this ability to write these lines . . . [it's] always so weird, how when writers write, you read the story, and they're inexorably always parallel with what's happening in your life. I think they pick up on that, because they know us so well, whether it's what they hear on dailies and stuff when we're not paying attention when we're miked, or when they read articles or see something about us. Maybe it's a little bit of insight they didn't know before - they use all of that stuff.

Charlie's Angels is being revived yet again with Minka Kelly heading up the latest reboot of the classic TV series. The sexy show that originally catapulted Farrah Fawcett to fame in the '70s has already enjoyed one major comeback with a big-screen version in 2000 featuring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz as the ass-kicking female detectives. The film was a hit at the box office, and the threesome teamed up again in 2003 for the sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Minka and her costars Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh have been shooting their series in Miami for the past several weeks, revealing their great chemistry both on and off the set. Stuffed in the City Gives Loveys a Big Town Adventure

Tots who've dreamed of a visit to the Big Apple, but haven't made it there can send their favorite toy. Stuffed in the City, a toy-traveling firm, arranges tours of New York City for a child's favorite doll or lovey to experience the big city over the course of a week (starting at $50). Tour participants visit landmarks and their trip is documented with photographs in each location. When the tour is over, the toy is returned along with both printed and electronic copies of the photos, a certificate, and a token souvenir.

The company arranges approximately 25 tours each month, many of which customers customize with added stops that have personal meaning for them. While most toys are sent in from the US, SITC has seen visitors from as far away as Russia, China, and Australia. They are in talks to expand to other cities. 2011 Fall Paris Fashion Week: Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten stayed true to his decadent eclecticism for Fall 2011, supplying us with a full-throttle experience filled with tweedy textures, snakeskin swirled skirts, shimmery knits, and a heavy helping of outstanding collage-effect prints. Sounds busy at first read, but look closely and you will soon become entranced with the designer's genius story. The inspiration, which Van Noten cites as David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust and Ballets Russes founder Sergei Diaghilev, came together to form a mixture of marbled tweed jackets, tuxedo striped trousers, fur-lined coats, and a bevy of multicolored patterns made into knee-length skirts and blouses. There was an eye-catching button-up work shirt - one of our favorite pieces - smartly remixed with a bold silk print trailing down one arm and across the back. And then the dresses appeared: languid, loose, and seductive, cut almost like a loose tee up top and sliced all the way up to the thigh on down below.

Trends: Collage prints, tuxedo trousers, metallic tweed.
